12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

"Xbox Record That" records the last 30-seconds of gameplay

You can, however, pull up game DVR and tell Xbox One to save up to the last five minutes of gameplay.
 
This is how they need to do all of their presentations. A couple of casually dressed guys sitting in a living room setting, having fun. The game footage over the past few days and a presentation like this went a long way with me. Just keep being like this, Microsoft. Please.

Me? I am more than happy to admit some of my venom against these features were wrong. I'm not going to lie to myself and say that this is not impressive or that I would have no use for any of this. I agree with you. If we go by what many on Gaf have said about the OS and all that, it should of blown up about 3 minutes into the video with the Kinect spinning in circles and smoke coming out of the hardware. I mean, the way some on here were so adamant that the machine would literally blow up because of how bad the OS was etc.

I mean, I understand to a certain extent some of the hatred because of the 180's, personally I was fine with how they originally planned it, but I know that was not for everybody and that is fair, but we still rarely can have a decent Xbox One discussion without many coming into a thread and blasting stuff. I think the only thread EVER was the one I made about Xbox Gamers exchanging gamertags that was free from someone coming in and crapping all over the thread.

I think too many people want to see the console burn and that is why those same people are calling this fake and no way representative of how it will work etc.

That was a curious omission. I was really hoping they showed off some interesting use cases. For example, I would like to see something along the lines of the Game of Thrones SmartScreen demo where I could say "Xbox, who is this character?" and then have an app snap in and give info on the side.

Imagine these use cases:

"Xbox, who is this actress?" (Pull up IMDB profile and snap it in)
"Xbox, where is this?" (Location in the story etc and snap it in)

All of that would be extremely useful.

I'm also very curious how the multi-tasking works under the hood:

Is it more akin to smartphones or desktops?

iOS, for example, saves application states in memory but eventually flushes it out when other apps need that memory. It doesn't save to local storage. This is why a webpage or app has to completely reload when you switch back.

Will the Xbox OS have similar limitations or will I be able to open YouTube, Machinima, Netflix and not have to worry about their states being reset?

Since the Xbox allows multiple users, will it also save different app states for different users? For example, if User A watches a YouTube/Netflix clip and pauses half way and User B logs in to watch some other clip on YouTube/Netflix? Will User A be able to go back and resume later on?

If Albert or anyone in the know entertaining my curiosities, that would be great!
 
Ui looked impressive enough to make me think about canceling my ps4 preorder. I don't want an xbox one at launch. So I might just wait it out a bit. I have a feeling ps4's OS is very underwhelming at launch. It might be worth it to wait a bit before jumping into next gen to see what happens and what improves. Hard decision.
 
I dunno about this...on one hand it looks great, but it is just a waste of precious resources. 10% of GPU, 3 Gigs of ram, 2 CPU cores....

maybe if the box were more powerful.

Major are there plans for themes on the store? There was a thread about not being able to change the background colour, but does the Xbox One really not have changeable themes? Its been on 360 since day one just wondered if it would be the same here.

Which is absolutely fucking sad. Microsoft has done some things to piss me off in the past and I have been very vocal about it. But I always remember how much fun I have had with the Xbox brand whenever I calm down. As far as the Xbox One goes, it has the best launch exclusives for me and I finally see something that sells me on the other features that makes the system unique. To hell with all of this doom and gloom, 'I want blood' mentality. Tired of it.
 
Yes, it's cool and all but I can't help but feel like gaming took the backseat for everything else, skype, watching TV and all. Definitely a different priority, not necessarily a bad thing, but...
 
Really hope that the Xbox One still supports the Xbox 360 Media Remote for when I don't want to yell at my TV or use a controller.

Kind of how I am feeling now. Makes me think there's just going to be a shit ton of features MS players will be able to lord over Sony until next gen when Sony gets to adding them. Kind of like parties this gen.

Major, what I meant is that the inputted TV feed is not live TV. It was addressing a previous statement about having rights to re-broadcast live TV, sports and other such issues.

Is that incorrect?

I would agree were it not for the meaty launch lineup and how games like Ryse look at launch. Oh well, there goes worrying about that.

I'm unlikely to ever use this as my media center considering I have a dedicated XBMC HTPC, but I would LOVE it if Microsoft could manage to bring stuff like DirecTV, Starz Play, Max Go, Showtime Anywhere, etc. that only exist on mobile/tablet devices at the moment. It would get a shit ton of usage from me if Microsoft managed to strike these deals.
 
Great looking UI, I always liked the theme of Windows 8 I could just never use it!

Seems smooth too between the transitions.

Off Topic: Why after every video I watch on YouTube lately I always get some woman trying to tell me about god as my next suggested video!?
 
That Skype video call was amazing and it will sell many consoles.

Wow it feels so weird to have a system selling video of Xbox One where it is not the games that are selling it :|

The ESPN video shows clips saying DeSean Jackson is probable against the Raiders, who they played two days later, on November 3rd.

Seems like live tv to me. Nothing seemed faked.

I'm with you on that opinion, which I hope we aren't crucified for.

That was one of the biggest reasons I even got hyped about next gen and was praying for a while that there could be some kind of opt in for the day one patch, but I guess with all they have going on they'd never have time to sort out all the logistics and work in time.

Imo the games aren't exactly any kind of leap and bound in terms of offering me something new (Killzone is Killzone, Forza is Forza BUT OMG WITH SHINY GRAPHICS THIS TIME), but the way the consoles could actually offer me content or integrate more with my every day tech use is what really caught my eye.

I still intend on that digital library and being able to insta-access all my games/insta-join game invites/etc, it just means MS and Sony get to keep their monopoly of digital libraries with zero competition on price (no, retail offering lower prices for physical is not competing if it isn't offering me the same complete experience as digital).

It will sting my wallet a little more, but I guess you have to pay for what you want.

I think if it would have crashed like people believe it is doing, then Nilay would have written about it.

Maybe it's not in the videos because we already know what it's supposed to do thanks to Windows 8. It's not an exciting feature in that sense. People are latching onto it because they want the rumors of it's bugginess to be true.

I feel way more comfortable with this video. It's from two different angles, but one continuous cut. It has issues with voice recognition at times, but it's functional. It does seem to be more sluggish than the official video, but it probably has to do with network speed/latency with the voice recognition.

The lesson here: Show the warts MS. By showing the *perfect* cut, you are setting an unrealistic expectation of perfect functionality.
 
Very promising stuff. If the UI is as fluid when running all these apps simultaneously after I've installed a ton of games onto the hard drive, and after the first year of patches/updates, I will be incredibly pleased.

I appreciate your opinion but the DRM was just too much anticonsumer like SOPA, ACTA etc. There is a good reason why MS backed up on it. Leaving it in would do TREMENDOUS damage to the brand, console and sales of it.

You just gotta deal with it, mang. Maybe PS5/ Xbox3 will be always-online, online-only.
 
Looked awesome. Really impressed me by how fast and responsive it is. Probably going to spend the first few minutes when I get the thing opening random apps for fun, just because Voice Commands are cool.

Also, so looking at IE, seems like you can tell it to go to websites by voice. Gonna be so great playing Forza, and instead of getting up and going to my computer to browse GAF, just say "Xbox, snap Internet Explorer! Xbox, browse NeoGAF.com!"

Hey Major, I have a question!

1) Can you use the Kinect to write a message via voice? Since Windows Phone can do it, am I correct in assuming Xbox One can as well? Can I say, Xbox, send message to MajorNelson, "Hey man want to play some Battlefield?" Or can I use it to search videos on Youtube? "Xbox, Snap IE! Xbox, browse YouTube.com! Xbox, search Katy Perry "Roar"!"

2) Can I use the Kinect to start playing music? I see you can use it to start movies "Xbox, play Pacific Rim!" can I do the same for music? Xbox, go to Xbox Music. Play album, Halo 4 official soundtrack!"
