CNET: Xbox One won't play 3D Blu-rays -- for now

3d in movies is shit anyways
invented to charge extra money in cinemas

go watch world war z in 3d
the feel of getting ripped off

Never watched WWZ but I agree 3d is just a gimmick. I'd rather spend that on more worthwhile things like size and other specs, even 120 hz. The only problem with this plan is that so many HDTVs come with 3D you'd end up with 3D whether you like it or not.

this has to be a software issue, not licensing... however, something that is marketed as multimedia console, and all-in-one should be able to do same things that cheapo bd players do.

See you on live for titanfall? Can't say this effects me whatsoever I don't have a 3D setup and I hate 3D but would have been a nice option
Oh I'll definitely have an Xbox One by the time Titanfall comes out. Definitely can't miss out on that game.

I'm a huge fan of 3D though, so it's a little bit disappointing that the Xbox doesn't support it right out of the gate.

I would guess this probably has to do with some crap licensing that the Bluray group or whoever they are is responsible for,

If the PS4 supports 3D games it supports 3D movies as well (once you patch in Blu-Ray playback) since it's the same signal that's sent telling the TV to render 3D.

PS4 supports 3D gaming, which would pretty much confirm the Blu-Ray movies will work (same technology/license) once you patch Blu-Ray playback.

Although I have no doubt that the PS4 will probably play both 3D games and 3D movies, the technologies are not the same.

I feel that. Was hoping you'd grab one at launch need some familiar faces to play with in a few weeks. I don't doubt that Xbox One will have 3D playback at some point but I see the want/need for it currently.

i was unaware that you needed some special blu-ray type to play 3D movies. Considering I dislike the 3D format the vast majority of the time in its current state, it's no deal to me at all. But I guess that does suck for those who want to watch...um...Avata...Gravity on Blu-Ray 3D when it comes out.

Yeah I'm still fighting the urge to go with Xbox at launch. I really don't have any friends on PSN since I did all of my online gaming on 360, and played nothing but the exclusives on PS3. If I go with the PS4, it'll be like starting from scratch trying to find new friends, lol. Don't know if I feel like dealing with that. Gonna be hard not playing with my Xbox buddies for a little while, but I'll have an Xbox One by Christmas.

Don't really see myself being interested in this feature, personally, but it would be nice to see it added later on.

Microsoft, in my opinion, have gotten far more important features in place first.

Damn! Glad I chose the ps4. A bluray player that can play 3d movies and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround was a big reason I wanted to get a new console at launch.

it never even occurred to me one of the consoles wouldn't do that.

As stated earlier in the thread:

1. This omission is surely a launch pain. 3D movie playback will undoubtedly make it's way to the console sometime soon.
2. 3D playback on the One actually has several challenges that the PS3 (and probably to a lesser extent the PS4) won't face. Microsoft has to figure out how to display Snapped apps during 3D playback. And how to deal with users hitting the guide button during 3D playback. The PS3 didn't have to deal with the first and just slapped the XMB overtop everything for the second. The PS4 doesn't have to worry about the first, and I'm not sure how it will deal with the second. And this is ignoring the vast difference in experience with the Blu-ray format (Sony helped develop the technology while Microsoft, to my knowledge, has never shipped a product with a Blu-ray drive)

Not disputing the fact that they stick it to people with cinema prices, but at home with a good 3DTV? You get the BD for the same price, and it looks fucking glorious on movies that were filmed in 3D (pretty sure WWZ's 3D was done in post production). Prometheus and Avatar are visually stunning in 3D, for instance.

I have to agree here. 3D isn't something I use all the time, but for certain movies I do occasionally break out the glasses. It's frickkin' AWESOME on my 65" LED TV.

More than movies though, I've really enjoyed a good number of games in 3D. It definitely makes some things easier. For example: I always sucked at Super Stardust HD. From the time it came out, I'd put hours into the thing and just SUCKED. However, after I got my TV it was the first game I had that I knew supported 3D, so I tried it. Suddenly, I'm GOOD at Super Stardust HD! Can make it to the end of the game almost every time. Take off the glasses and I suck again. For whatever reason, the change in perspective made that game much easier. For me anyway.

Killzone was good in 3D though in some of the darker areas it wasn't very good. Avatar is FANTASTIC in 3D. Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows...not so much. Again with that movie I think the gloominess/darkness hurts the 3D.

Anyway, I sure hope the PS4 supports 3D playback as well. Although if it supports 3D games it will almost certainly do so.

I can't figure for the life of me why MS wouldn't support BD playback on the XB1 I'd have thought that was a no brainer. Hopefully for people getting the XB1 that comes in an update SOON. Otherwise I think it's a really dumb omission on the part of MS. Yes, it's an extra licensing fee, but come on.... Not that big of a deal.

snap should pose as many issues as the guide does on the 360 or the playback bar does on power DVD.

zero.

just incase anyone thinks I'm bullshitting about this being an important feature in the new consoles to me:

edit: damnit! I accidentally edited that post instead of the one further up in this thread.

Ugh. What is the deal with all of his cutting corners crap this generation?

I was really hoping to the use the Xbox One as my "multimedia" box and Blu-ray player.

Never thought about this for Number 2 there. I really hope they add 3D playback as I'd like the use my Xbox One instead of PS4 for this kind of thing.
