Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

It's not really the same comparison as your not having to pay steam a monthly subscription to get access to their steam sales.

That's a whole different argument. One could say getting all those free games and the money saved on the discounts more than pays for the membership if you break it all down.

You guys have seen what Amazon has done in destroying Steam sales right guys?

This only makes my PS4 decision all the sweeter as a CheapAssGamer.

Holy shit.

Tiger Woods 14 is $20 less on Amazon also.

Noticing a pattern - it looks like mostly EA and Sony games.

So...can Amazon negotiate with third parties independently of Sony?

Discounting SONY games is harder to understand though!

Then again those free games dissapear once you stop PS+, it's a rental service at best which offers deals on the side. In the end you still had to fork over cash to enter the program - getting games you may or may not have wanted.

Those crazy motherfuckers. They actually went and did it.

I was certain we'd never see something like this, having a console manufacturer relinquish their tight control over their digital storefront like this. This is the kind of stuff that instills confidence in a digital future in the console space for me. Looking at gofreak's post, we're already seeing at least some benefit to the move, hopefully this store will stick around and really start seeing some price warzzz all around going forward.

Now, there's one more thing you have to do Sony. And you must do whatever it takes to accomplish it. Suck lord Gaben's cock if you have to, but get a damn Steam store on Playstation. Then the internet will fuckin' implode - or at least, Neogaf servers for a while.

What a way to wake up...

Excellent news that it's already providing better deals.

Honestly I'm more interested to find out if digital psn games are region free like their physical counterparts. I don't want to have to fragment my purchases across my AU psn account and a US psn account, so if international codes redeem in the AU store like steam then I could definitely see myself going all digital in the future.

I would point out that this isn't the first time Amazon has dipped a toe into this kind of stuff and most likely they will continue with other offerings in the future. I just have to ask if they are going to stick with it this time. Yeah there might be some offers on things that make it cheaper than buying physical copies, but if they don't get the newest games day and date digitally it's a waste. That was the problem with the previous PSN storefront on Amazon. They weren't getting the newest games that people were wanting, and thus they couldn't be competitive in pricing. Tony has done a lot of great things for sure, but will he be able to deliver consistently that is yet to be proven.

Oh and does anyone remember the Xbox live marketplace offering Amazon used to have?

You have to redeem from the regional store the code is for.

BUT, on PS3 - and I think on PS4? - you can play that content with another account from any region.

Vita is more complicated than that, you can only play with the local account.

The lack of competition was the one thing holding back the idea of a completely digital console, and with this, I think I may jump on board*.

*Well, if the prices are good.

YEP!

The thing that miffed me about MS totally reversing the DRM with no compromise was that we were once again in the situation where digital games were available only from psn/xbl and at stupid prices.

IF they sell games for reasonable prices i.e. not still selling half decade old games at £30 and what not, I'm in. Hard.

rental service at best? Maybe rental service at worst if one is inclined to present it negatively. If you are invested in the ecosystem its a free game or 3 a month and usually still worth having. Imo of course

Hopefully amazon is able to set their own sale prices and won't have to have approval from Sony.

Amazon has had some great sales on pc digital games. Sales that rival the steam sales

True but now that you have to have it for MP there's more motivation to keep it now :P

As long as they keep doing what they're doing they won't have a problem. It's when the free games dry that they'll have a big issue on their hands with people.

Well, Steam has family share now, and you also don't pay for that :P

I would never let someone else have access to my library.

Huge banner ad for Xbox within the PS store. Awkward.

As a Canadian it won't help me but I thought amazon u.s. already did this for Xbox years ago no?

Yeah that's the thing; I already have loads of purchases on my AU account, so I want all future purchases to be tied to this account as well so I don't have to juggle my content between two accounts (even if I can access the games on my AU account on PS4, the games would still be tied to the US account). That's why I hope PS4 games don't follow the current regime, i.e. they don't have region specific psn codes (although I'm almost certain this will continue to be the case).

What if indies start offering PSN codes along with steam codes and drm free when you buy from the Humble Store or in HIBs?!

GAF will explode!
