he did remove the hard and he start up the ps4 then he did something and then trun off the ps4 after that he put up teh hard and turn the ps4 up agian then go to safe mod and re install the update and boom fixed

It is pretty standard if the hard drive or memory the device is trying to read from was somehow corrupted. In this case, an aborted download/install. How do you think you fix a corrupted Windows install/boot? A bricked smartphone?

You have to realize that a lot of consumers are not as technically advanced as us. I know this is hard to believe but it is true.

I think it is pretty common for us tech competent people to forget that.

He said he swapped in another, but honestly booting WITHOUT one seemed bad. I'm not really getting what was wrong with the streamers system, he put in the same HDD afterwards.

You don't get into safe mode to fix a corrupted Windows install by removing the hard drive, booting the computer, turning it off, and putting the hard drive back in and turning it on.

Safe mode wasn't able to be entered without causing a hardware fault (in this case a missing hard drive). This is not how it should work.

He just removed the hdd, booted with no hdd, got some error, then put it back in and it worked.

Seems to me that either through data corruption or some other as-yet-unknown process the PS4 got trapped in a loop where it was unable to boot, but was unable to recognize that it should enter safe mode. Removing the HDD forced the system into the safe mode cycle. Once in safe mode, putting the HDD back in allowed for it to perform its restoration process and resume normal operation.

The real question is why the system was unable to enter safe mode originally.

This is still a software problem that needs fixing, it required the system to get a hardware fault before it fixed itself, which is really bad. The hardware itself was fine but he couldn't get into safe mode without 'hurting' the hardware, effectively.

As for what happened here. This entire thing was so far beyond fucked that trying to deduce any sort of correlation beyond this guy is clearly challenged with technology, following directions, and even common sense, is pointless.

Whether it was an update or a game install, you don't just unplug the power cord from the unit at will. As unlikely as it is, it's technically possible to fuck your computer over doing the same thing if it happens to be in the middle of accessing a critical system file in such a way it becomes corrupted.

You say software issue. I say don't unplug your system unless it's properly fucking shutdown.
