Killer Instinct | Review Thread

I'd honestly rather them price it at $60 and delay the game until it has enough characters + features, but I'm probably in the minority. It's just disappointing they had to rush it for the launch period.

I think a $60 price point for entry would only hurt it. Giving access to the whole game with one character, pricing it at $20 for all 8, and giving you the option of buying characters piecemeal, gets more people to try or even buy it impulsively. If you're not that in to fighting games or just not that great at them, $60 is a lot to throw down, but $20 is kind of a "sure, I'll give it a try" price point.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have more characters to mess around with at the start. But the reality is that that's about all I could do with any of them save maybe a couple in a week's time. The value for me is in learning the characters. That will take a LOT of play time and I'd say $20 is a fair price for a couple of months of play time. If your personal value only comes from the Story Mode (remember there is also a Survival mode at launch) then no, this wont be worth the money until it's updated.

I play fighting games competitively, and I'm not saying I don't understand why this was done. All I'm saying it's disappointing, and I'm one who prefers a full game upfront rather than being promised a full game later. I'm looking forward to it and hope the quality of the gameplay is great.

I think this is Double Helix's highest rated game...I'm glad they managed to pull it off after being bashed so much, day one buy since I loved KI1 and KI2.

as if # of characters != quality of a fighter

hmmm

Well it doesn't help that waiting to buy most fighting games last gen wound up with an ultimate version being released.

That being said I am sure by the end of next year/early the year after that they will release a KI: Gold with all the fighters on a disc/digitally.

It is nice to fight a variety of opponents with different styles of fighting. Hopefully the game is embraced by the fighting community.

First impressions of netcode from GameInformer.

@maximilian_ very little input lag. Very playable. I'm pretty happy with it.

@maximilian_ I won't go too in-depth on the online functionality on the review. Did not experience rollback. Felt great.

I still think MS messed up and should have made this a full fledged retail game, but what DH did what the series is amazing. I honestly can't think of any other dev who could have did a better job.

The best part is that they seem to have the core gameplay right, which is the hardest part. All they need is the content, which can always be added, and this next gen KI could become a premier fighting game series.

A f2p fighting game from launch could prove to be exceptionally intelligent if handled properly. Microsoft would be clever to make more characters available for free from launch, the game will be more successful long term for it.

My internet's off at home, so I'm on a shit 3G connection on mobile. Nice to see these reviews, Double Helix redeemed etc etc.

Curious as wether Dale or Chris are doing Dtoid's review for KI.

Also COME ON WHY RELEASE ANOTHER SOUNDTRACK TEASE WHEN I'M DISCONNECTED ; A;

(If a mod could update the OT with reviews it'd be appreciated. c:)

Pretty sure I read, or heard on one of the streams that the free character would rotate ala LoL.

Chris said on twitter 'I'm enjoying it so far'.

Dammit! Now I've lost the bet on the other site. Joystiq review crushed my chances. Please.. a 60 out of 100? I needed this game to average an 80. A free to play game getting brought down because of the roster limit. Give me a break. 20 bucks or free for a game like this is a great deal.

The small roster and no story mode at launch is was brought the reviews down, game is really good, just unfinished.

i'd like to see KI become the same runaway hit that Injustice was (especially since IMO KI looks a hell of a lot more fun). it is very refreshing to see non-Capcom, non-anime fighters get attention.

The HUGE hurdle, however, is that barrier of entry is $500 at a minimum.

So why don't you wait until there's $60 worth of content in two years and then buy the game while the rest of us enjoy what's there now.

All they are giving you is more options. I love this model and really hope more fighters adopt it next gen. I'm tired of buying a game and then it becoming obsolete a year later when another edition comes out.

8 & 7's thats mediocre according to the few people in the PS4 review threads.
Great by my metric

Please read my other post, I'm going to be enjoying it with you.

In reference to the smaller character roster. I don't really care about single player content as long as there's an adequate training mode. :p

Ya. I just don't get how the score can get brought down so low because of that for a free game. But oh well.. every reviews says the controls are top notch and that the fighting is there. That's all I want. Can't wait to go old school and recapture that love of playing fighting games.

Can't wait for Max to rip this game apart in his review.

You haven't visited his YouTube channel or read any of his posts on GAF in at least 4 months confirmed.

Unless you mean he's going to gut it and tell you how the game works (but he's already done that several times).

I looked at OP's avatar and then the review scores and this was the first thing that poped into my head:

I have no doubt that the game is at least decent but I don't think the game can properly be reviewed in the state it was given to critics.

The core gameplay for KI may be solid, but you just can't give a fighting game with a serious dearth of characters a positive review. And then when the game locks you to one character....

Rip apart positively? Cause all of his impressions of the game have been favorable.

Unless I'm just ig'nant.

I was being facetious. Of course he'll love it. :)

They aren't going to give you half the game for free

Four characters being 'half the game' is dire enough as it is, not providing them to players and allowing for a host of completely not fun 'mirror matches' as the first impact to a potential audience is furthermore short sighted and down right unacceptable. This is a fighting game remember. If they deem this unreasonable then F2P isn't the right approach for this title and their pricing scheme needs to be adjusted immediately.
