Uh... Persona is rather niche, especially compared to Pokemon.

My point is that it's not a niche JRPG that only hardcore JRPG fans enjoy. Persona is also enjoyed by people who usually don't care for JRPGs, ergo you shouldn't look only at the JRPG fanbase because Persona's fanbase is wider than that (which doesn't mean the same thing as 'bigger'). I don't know why you guys are struggling with this concept -- I thought it was common sense.

Omg, I just woke up and saw the threads for the games for the Vita and 3DS and was about to rage hard and then I saw this beautiful thread! Holy shit! YES! I am so happy right now! Late, but happy as fuck! ;-;

In my experience, most Persona fans pretty much just like Persona and hate everything else. At least, that's the impression I get from their posts.

I'm just teasing ;)

We must prepare to be disappointed :( Theo is there, even Marie is there... But no signs of Hamuko :(
Yeah, changing the tone of the game wouldn't be a bad idea. Removing Social Links and the date sim aspect, on other hand, would drive a huge part of the fandom mad. I personally would love to see the date sim aspect in a more serious game ;)

Atlus, don't act like she doesn't exist please D:

in regard to sim dating aspect, I thought they should improve it. A mix between original P3 and P4. I mean, dating all girls available without fear of consequences is stupid, so does unable to proceed your social link because the relationships ended up as romantic while you don't wish it to.

Well, I'm highly excited, but also unsurprisingly disappointed. I knew it was fairly certain the title would lag behind a gen, but when my PS3 broke a year ago, I also knew I'd not be replacing it so close to new consoles. So, I guess I'll just have to wait even longer and hope for a PS4/Vita port. Maybe Gaikai will be all lined up by then and a turn based game like Persona would be a perfect fit? We'll see.

Atlus loves to release games for dead console. What's with waiting for the whole gen and announce a hyped sequel for a last gen system - a week after the new generation of consoles released?

I'm not surprised its on PS3. Just mad at myself for giving away my PS3. On the plus side this probably won't be out in the US until 2015 I assume (since the Japanese version is in Winter 2014).

So PS3s should be even cheaper by then. I also hope Gaikai starts working on PS4 and allows you to buy PS3 releases.

This is just your opinion though. Sales do not really back your position up, as Persona doesn't sell that much better than other JRPG series in the west. Unless you are polling everyone who purchased P4, how do you know whether most of them are regular JRPG fans or not?

Some people who don't typically buy JRPGs picked up Ni No Kuni. Same is probably true for all well reviewed JRPGs. That doesn't mean their audience isn't primarily the regular JRPG buying audience which propels these titles to 50-200k sales in North America, and about the same in Europe. Unless we are talking about something like Final Fantasy which sells 5-10x more than the genre norm, you are trying to make an objective statement without any proof to back it up.

So, now that we know more, I'd love to know the story behind Aeana's comment about how reactions here would be interesting. Because PS3, particularly when she made it, was like the safest bet?

I guess you also missed my later comment that things change. Yes, it is the safest bet, which is why it moved back to PS3 earlier in the year. This game has had some issues, and the development difficulties and presumably the Index financial situation caused them to change platforms. All of the ups and downs with this game are the reason why I've been pretty quiet the last few months, because different details kept changing.

Because you need the console to be actually released to develop games for it.

Change platforms? Are you saying it was initially going to be for the PS2 or something, because there's no way it was in development for any other platform.

The POINT people are trying to make with you is you need to back up what exactly leads you to believe this, because its niche for a reason. Hell I have strong feelings even Final Fantasy doesnt hold the system selling weight it used to. JRPGs dont sell consoles anymore, they just go where their strongest concentration of userbase is at.
Did anyone seriously pick up a PS4 to play JRPGs right now? No, and there is a reason for that. the potential is there sure, just like with ps3 moving from PS2 but in the formative years? These are struggling companies we are talking about.

So what is the likelihood that they end up adding the game to ps4 before release, do you think? Considering Sega does not have the difficulties of index.

back to ps3 huh

curious how another platform could have been considered, duckroll pretty bluntly said 3ds was never an option but then again he probably was trolling

Watching the stream live was one helluva emotional roller coaster. Freaking Atlus were being masterful trolls. I was led to believe "Persona Dance All Night, Fans Cry All Night", but thank god that didn't happen.

Rejoice Persona fans! ;___;

Cause they will still make money from it and not have to port the game, it makes a lot of sense.

Plus f Sony bring Gaikai to Vita, 2 birds with one stone.

Not everyone can (or want) to use Gaikai. And a port to PS4 would make some people buy the game twice, which is something Atlus loves to do.

It's just what smaller pubs (including Atlus) that develop and publish somewhat niche Japanese games like to do; supporting the last gen systems with a bigger user-base even when there are newer consoles out. It happened with the PS2 getting JRPGS late in it's life, even when the PS3/360/Wii was released. There should be cheaper/more mature development tools for said console by now and more people to sell your game(s) to when the console in question (the PS3) has been on the market for this long.

If that's the point they're trying to make, they're making it to the wrong person -- I never claimed P4 had mass appeal and could move systems. Reading comprehension please.

It's a niche game, but it's not a niche JRPG that only appeals to the most hardcore of JRPG fans. You guys might be confused about that, but Atlus is keenly aware -- hence, despite being a niche game with relatively low sales numbers, they're investing a lot in spinoffs that are in entirely different genres. They know the Persona franchise has appeal beyond JRPG fans.

how is the ps3 a dead system? ps4 doesn't come out until early 2014 in japan and this game comes out sometime during the last 3 months of the year. there is no way that the active userbase drops that much. especially since ps3 is still getting the games and genres that japan loves.

But seriously, I don't know how much you can disclose but what I picture is the game being developed for the PS3, then they dropped gamebyro and this would slow down the development time. Then they threw out the PS3 dev kits and started working with PS4 dev kits, to throw them and out and go back to the PS3 dev kits?
