2013 High-Res PC Screenshot Thread of Let the JPEG Die Already

I wanted to ask .are you using cheatengine for those shots ?

If yes can you sent me the file ?

No I'm hugging walls. I was playing for real so no cheat engine.

Hey Wanny, mind posting your SweetFX settings? Your DS2 shots are gorgeous.

EDIT: Beaten. A testament to how nice it looks.

Guess I can, a bit later. These days I like to play with tones more than a simple contrast setting. We have Levels & LGG that are very powerful tools. Gaussian bloom is also very great in dark games. It mimics natural bloom way much better than anything else out there. I hate when cheap blooms also bloom dark colors.

Alright last shots as I'm done with the game.

That car looks straight sex.

That simplified shot is killer dude, nice work.

(wtf with that shadow?!)

DmC still looks amazing.

Seriously. DmC is still so stellar. It's crazy how well it runs too.

Thanks to the wonders of SweetFx and PC Gaming, we can finally bring Super Mario Galaxy into the modern era. This is next gen.

Super Sweet Galaxy.

Can I post in .jpg or is forbidden?

As long as it isn't a compressed JPEG it's fine.

If it's a screenshot you just took in Steam and it's a JPEG, it's likely very compressed.

woah woah woah dude, read the rules. Two screen per post. Either make more post or use thumbnails or link to album, since 3 consecutive posts of the same game are also not allowed.

Wow, that Chromatic Aberration is nightmare fuel, I hope Nintendo never catches that trend :lol

I thought I was seeing things at first. I hope Valve also won't catch it.

Is that jpg compression that I'm seeing?

1920x1080 JPGs < 600KB? Definitely compressed a ton.

It's been happening more and more lately. When I first joined this forum, it was so that I could post screenshots in this thread. I made sure read the rules in the OP very thoroughly. I guess other folks just take it for granted.

How you guys can see the difference?
Srly I can do the upload of the same image in 3 MB.. but I swapped the 2 images and could not see the difference.

=O

I wonder why he bothered to downsample and use MSAA if he was just going to ruin his shots with compression.

I recommend an eye check-up, then. Because I can see compression artifacts in many of the screens you've posted and my eyes aren't very good.

P.S: Two screens per post, no more than 3 posts in a row for the same game.

I see terrible compression artifacts in every shot you posted. At first I completely doubted that you even rendered those at 4K because the compression actually makes your shots look really aliased. Mostly because compression shows up the most around edges where you'd normally see aliasing.

So yeah, we can definitely see the difference. Lots of folks can. That's why it's in the rules :P

I like this one. Unfortunately I do not have much time to play this game now but it seems to me pretty nice.

I originally took those shots to show the differences in the SweetFX setting I'm using (for another forum). Figured I'd upload a few here. I mostly don't care to take screenshots of the game because it looks much better in motion and screenshots don't do it justice.

Don't try to argue this. Go read the thread rules and follow them going forwards. If I want compression I'll go look at the next gen console screenshot thread.

Yep, i know very well what u are talking about, same thing happens in Rivals too.

Hopefully this doesn't sound snipey or anything, but I was wondering what kind of telltale signs there are for compression, etc? Maybe your eyes are just trained for it out of experience (I sub this thread but don't take many high res shots). I went back to look at those shots but no idea if its just confirmation bias making me think I can tell.

Compare these two.

One suffers JPEG compression, the other doesn't.

The tell tale signs are loss in the finer details like the smaller sections (compare the crowd in the background between the two, or the last row of flags) and often there is blocky artifacting around the edges of things. Look at the top point of the Luchadors belt for the blockiness.

Now, when hearing about what these things are it's easy to think "But they're such minor differences!" and while that's true, the issue is that there are a LOT of small differences and as a result, the whole image looks muddy, compressed, and low detail. The crisper aspects are lost.

Thanks for the reply, I'm on my phone so will look properly later when I don't have to scroll around the image!

Genuinely interested in this stuff.

I like what you did with these paired shots showing the scene in the paintings!

Well it's not quite the same scenes. Not even close. But I thought it might be more interesting to show the historic setting, then the modern setting with painings of the same period :)
