Francis rages about Microtransactions

You can't have your cake and eat it. If they have such a hard-on for microtransactions, give me the choice. Have a F2P version and a retail priced no bullshit version that gives me everything up front and not even once bugs me or even hints at F2P elements.

Can't watch the serious version. Doesn't matter what link I use. First one is broken and the next only loads @ 1minute (slowly).

I keep getting this recently with a lot of youtube videos even though I've got 60mb d/l and 13 u/l. What's going on?

No Boogie, i don't want to spend that amount of money on a game - i'd like to spend less. Full retail price where i live can get me a pair of new brand jeans ffs.

So very true.

I'm amused by the fact that Boogie cited Blizzard expansions as the predecessors to DLC when in fact the very first game expansion disks were, oddly enough, extra cars for a driving game.

Back in 1989.
A driving game that is near and dear to my heart.
Test Drive II: The Duel.
Which, I owned for the Commodore 64 and then subsequently repurchased for the Amiga.
I still remember purchasing the Supercars and Muscle Cars floppy disks from my local computer shop (which was called Neutron Computers).

How many cars did you get on this disk? 5
You got a Lambourghini Countach, a Corvette ZR1, a Porsche 911 RUF, a Lotus Turbo Esprit... and, my favorite, a Ferrari Testarossa.
And it retailed for about $25 or thereabouts.

The fun twist is this.
Test Drive II: The Duel was developed by Distinctive Software and published by Accolade.
This studio was purchased a couple years later in 1991 by Electronic Arts and remolded into EA Canada.

And who conceived the first ever expansion disk for a driving game back in 1989? Distinctive Software's co-founder... who happens to be this guy...

You can´t make stuff like that up.

It makes you wonder if MS is making this practice mandatory for all its exclusives... most of all, I wonder if Titan Fall will have "pay for better mechs and guns" that are not unlockable like in traditional FPS. That would suck.

Revelation!

Ha ha oh man, this alone needs to be a thread or podcast topic.

And there's going to be free DLC for Killzone..

Take a lesson Forza

While am not a fan of whats going on with Forza will defend it by saying the following.

Actually thats an unfair comparison considering that Forza uses many licensed "items" where as Killzone has all its own content.

Now if GT 6 was doing that you would have a far better argument with your statement.

I suppose they started licensing stuff with Forza 5..

Well both EA and MS have their hands in that cookie jar, so I think we're safe to assume there will be.

Funny how he mentions $60 is a lot because most people work like 10 hours for that.

For perspective, a new game over here (Portugal) is €70. Minimum wage is €475 a month. And lots of people earn that or not much above that.

That's a fair statement..

But what Boogie said is true.. I work hard for the video games that I buy. And I'll buy DLC if it warrants it. I basically bought almost all of Borderlands 2 DLC because it's awesome content and a bang for your buck if you will.

But for games to keep inching closer and closer to my wallet ::Checks on games and wallet to make sure everything is there:: Its just nice to see a game giving out free stuff that doesn't require money (besides PS+) or pre-order. I'm sure there will be some DLC that costs money later.

But Forza 5 could've done this better. For it to have less content than Forza 4 and micro trans everything and still have less content. No liking where this is heading.

Edit: And I do realize that there is a 50$ premium for additional 50 cars in the next 6 months.. Thats still is less than Forza 4. So it's basically almost buying 2 brand new games when it's predecessor still gives you more on a weaker console... I'm keeping my eye on you Forza

Their are plenty of things to complain about in gaming, the retail price isn't one of them. Game prices are the same or cheaper than they were 20 years ago.

Agreed, I do not like the "new" practice we are seeing in some games lately and will not support them just by not purchasing said titles which do this. As mentioned before it was one of the reasons a favorite series of mine Ridge Racer, I did not get the PS Vita version as it turned into a barebone mess with everything else shoveled in as paid DLC instead.

Damned shame to see that the Forza series is going this route, as when I still did game on my 360 I did enjoy the previous Forza titles and cant imagine how the current fans of the series must feel having bought this game only to find out how its "evolved" with all of these DLC items and such. Also apparently removed features and what nots reading posts in other Forza related threads.

Now if it went as a F2P title, I can understand paying to support the product / developers such as Warframe for example. Which I have paid out at least the amount of a game purchase around 60 USD, that I think is fair considering the amount of enjoyment I have had with the PC version of the game.

But when we the consumers pay out a certain amount which is usually around 50 USD then on top of that is expected to fill in the blanks with paid DLC from the get go, Id say that isnt exactly good business practice regardless of how much sense it might make on paper.

The new serious video from Francis still doesn't address the real issue. The problem isn't with microtransactions, it's designing the game around them.

I'm with you as a lifelong oldie gamer, this unsettled me. Fine have them as an add on or something, but the games should never be built around them, sheer greed to blame for that.

I think thats the problem when pencil pushers start to get the grand idea to mix social gaming schemes with the brick & mortar gaming we have been used to for so long. As for the most part developers would understand this simple principal of hiding shit behind paywalls pisses off the consumer base, as most of them are the same as us. Gamers.

Its more when someone on the other side of the fence decides that they need to make more money and see how social gaming is pulling in mad bank with their micro transactions that its a great idea to try to pull in cash by cutting things out and assuming the fans will pay for it. Which will happen to some extent, but the negative press will also be there.

*Edit

Older joke pic, but still pretty accurate I think on the whole DLC situation that we face these days.

Yeah the pencil pushers need to keep hands off gaming, yes they must make profits so yeah have your stores etc for nice outfits whatever but do not mess with the games mechanics to fit it in we aren't stupid us gamers we can smell the bs a mile off. I have bought a mount in WoW so I'm not adverse to such things when done correctly.

Splendid "serious" video: the good thing about boogie is the fact that he is able to summarize a true gamer's "feelings".

The francis rant is usual francis, I hope he keeps francis around, I just love when he throws stuff around for no reason (or for some reason, like in the PS4 unboxing).

Its unfortunate since really things like proper DLC such as actual expansions which we have seen like with Skyrim, Borderlands, Dishonored etc work great. But what does not is when you release a title that is obviously missing things due to them being Day 1 DLC. Some titles more obvious than others.

Once again highly unfortunate situation for fans of the Forza series. If there was a time when the matrix "not like this" gif was appropriate Id say its now.

Yeah lol reminds me of the day my Xbox 360 broke, let's just say it went on a trip lol. I wasn't best pleased and I'm usually a very chilled person, but damn just as I was exploring skyrim.... ah well these things happen.

This is the whole problem with the Skylander, Disney Infinity games... but that's a whole other discussion for another day.

I really hope the more casual gamers who buy consoles just for games like Forza and GT and who don't get to be very vocal in online communities or watch videos like this one have the sensibility to vote with their wallet and realize how important it is to stop this trend.

I think they are the silent giant in this market and if they agree with these business models then a vocal minority of "hardcore" gamers who frequent message boards or youtubers like Boogie will not change much.

I think it's very important for us to inform those mostly clueless people (if we know any) on why they shouldn't buy the games that support these models otherwise all these videos and online discussions are targeted and limited to what the publishers like to call "the vocal minorities" who are already extremelly aware of the problem itself anyway.

I see others have mentioned it, but I would prefer to see him dropping the alter-ego, and discussing the topic has himself.

Well both EA and MS have their hands in that cookie jar, so I think we're safe to assume there will be.

A heavily hyped title, (console) exclusive to the XB1, and with MS and EA involved, it would be a miracle (or a career-ending oversight) if Titanfall escaped DLC/microtransaction hell.

really curious how first party launch titles get made at all without iap crap. Need someway to recoup the cost. I guess you can eat the cost, but it seems like folks higher up at MS not want to sign off on that.

They get made the same way every single other title gets made. Only difference is when they started to work on said project is case by case depending on studio / publisher getting green lit for the project and when the dev kits arrive etc.

There isnt something magical or special that goes into a first party launch title making them different from the rest when it comes to the backend work.

Its not wanting to eat costs, but more wanting to eat more money seeing recent trends with social gaming pay schemes.

There's only one way to combat micro transactions: don't fucking buy them.
It doesn't really matter if you don't buy it, there are others who will. These business models are based around milking the few who are willing to pay tons rather than expecting every person to spend $5.

That's not to say you should buy in, just that voting with your wallet and doing nothing else won't do much if there is no outcry.
