Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Damn, I just tried the ZombiU demo and its really good. IMO, this is what survival horror games should be. My only complaint so far is item management on the Gamepad.

Also, I think this is the only thread in GAF that have positive posts about the WiiU. While its current situation is really unfortunate, I love the system and SM3W is amazing!

I played around with MH3U(great gane) and with my new Wii U controller pro... and god damn the control is AMAZING, I'm mindblown by how fucking good it is, I can't wait to play Mario Kart and Smash with it.

I think that's to add some tension to the game. Like I said in another thread, I haven't been able to play that game even though I've been sitting on it for a year because I'm having a hard time re-adjusting to dual analog after playing FPS' with the Wiimote exclusively for years. *Sigh* I think I'll give it another go this winter.

Yeah, I'm grateful for this thread. It's nice to see other GAFers enjoying their Wii U like I am.

Mostly thanks to the incredible pics in the screenshot thread, I bought the Zelda pack from the German amazon Cyber Monday deals yesterday. Didn't expect to buy a U so soon, but I really need to play WW and 3D World. I also never played the first Galaxy, so the backward compatibiltiy is a big plus in my book. Can't wait!
Oh, and also bought a white 3DS XL for LTTP. Full on Nintendo I guess. Just goes together so well with my PC, no need to jump on PS4 yet.

That kinda sucks, but at least I found out before buying a Wii game and being unable to play it. Am I correct in assuming that only Motion Plus controllers work with the WiiU in backwards compatibility mode?
Nope any kind of Wii Remote - as long whatever software you're using can use the normal one.

For all you new Wii U owners in the US:

Best Buy's selling Zombi U for $15. This should be a mandatory purchase at this price. GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO.

Oh hell yeah! Thanks for posting in this thread. Looks like I am stopping by Best Buy on Thursday night too!

For those too lazy to get off their couch during Black Friday week (and surprisingly not even posted yet, in this awesome WiiU thread), one of the greatest games of all time is coming to WiiU virtual console eshop this 11/28 Thanksgiving Day for $7.99 US (should be up for download later today).

Contra III: The Alien Wars

Aww, rats. I missed that.

Man, I love Contra III, but why are they charging $8 for it. Geez. There are only like six stages.
If you guys haven't played EDGE yet, its a nice puzzle game, with great retro music, for only $1.99.
I was thinking of getting it because it's just $1.99. I checked out the Miiverse page and people seem to really like it. Not quite sold yet. Need a bit of a nudge.

You don't want to know what a SNES copy of Contra III goes for then (just for the loose cart itself), since it is so popular in the retro gaming community. :(

Another game that just now went on sale is Call of Duty: Ghosts on the WiiU. Amazon has the WiiU version on sale today (11/28) for $39.96.

As far as I know, its the only retail outlet who has this particular version of the game discounted so heavily for Black Friday week (the other retailers have heavy discounts only on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions). Worth the $39 price tag regardless of the hate the title gets, if just for the very fun extinction mode and WiiU off-screen play.

Not sure where to post this so I thought I'd ask this here.

Do you need a gamepad to operate the Wii U or to play certain games? I keep seeing the console selling for ~100$ on ebay without a gamepad and wondering if it's possible to use with say just a classic/pro controller or wii mote.

Can't.

Also, it would be an incredibly dumb idea. Like buying a car without seats. Sure, you could squat in it and push the pedals with your hands but some things just don't work and you miss the whole point of it.

Buy it! Another life saving tip: You can close your backpack quickly by just tapping the analog stick. Might save you a second or two.

Tonight I am going to grab Xenoblade and The Metriod Prime Trilogy at the gamestop sale. It will actually be my first non-wii sports, wii experience. Zombie U is $10 used as well.

I wonder if Europe gets the
superior
Probotector version.

I bought a refurbished 32GB WiiU from Gamestop today. Waiting on the $9.99 ZombiU sale and maybe if I can be bothered I will go to K-Mart to get that meager discount on SM3DW.

The WiiU is backwards compatible with Wii games, correct? What are some decent $10-20 Wii gems I might be able to pick up? Preferably ones that will not require me to purchase a Wiimote.

Anything worth picking up on the eShop?

The list of Wii gems is endless. Here's a great thread for this question: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=635546

In general, you're gonna want to have a Wiimote anyway. Especially for when you play one of the best games of this year: Pikmin 3.

That kinda sucks, but at least I found out before buying a Wii game and being unable to play it. Am I correct in assuming that only Motion Plus controllers work with the WiiU in backwards compatibility mode?

Wii Mode turns the Wii U into a Wii. All Wii-logic applies, obviously.

Also I just tried playing Pikmin 3 for the first time and it's running an update...what?

I already updated my system twice. Once with 3d world on-disc update, then once with downloading the latest update off the internet and installing it. How can an older game like Pikmin 3 require a system update before running?

The game received 2 updates for DLC. These are GAME updates you're downloading, not system updates.

I don't have my Wii-U yet - plan on getting one over the holidays. But I'm tempted to pick up ZombiU and Rayman Legends. Not sure if I should wait and see what that lightning sale will be for Rayman, though.. Could be lower. And sadly, ZombiU is no longer $14.99 on Amazon. It's up to $22 now. Gamestop is still $9.99, but I would prefer New if possible. Bestbuy is still $14.99, though. Hm..

Just picked up a Zelda bundle for 249 at fred meyer (thanksgiving day deal)

On the way into the store, there were 2 people with xbone's, and 3 more inside buying an x box one. Cashier says, "thats the last one" So strange, They arent even on sale...

Nobody else was there getting the wiiu deal

having to redo each level to get the next unlocked level drove me nuts.
You mean there's more than one extra level?

I generally only bust out NintendoLand when friends are over but it was a big deal when we were finally able to get into the second stage.

I still can't manage the end of the first level without cheesing (suicide into the finish)

There are at least three stages in the DK game.

Thanks for the catch on ZombiU. I edited my post.

Question for Wii U owners: I want to switch my VC games library over from the wii, What are the drawbacks? i know not all VC games are out for wiuU yet, soo whats the deal?

Should i just make a new account to DL WWHD? will i still be able to " merge" my old one if i do this?

Any tips would be appreciated

The VC games will disappear from your Wii. You can continue playing all of them like you would on Wii on your Wii U using the Wii emulator. You can't use Off-TV Play, save states or Miiverse. Those features come if you upgrade your VC games (selected games only, $1 for NES games $1.5 for SNES).

Why would you make a new account to DL WWHD? I don't see any reason to do that. You can't sell your accounts because they're tied to consoles. Merging accounts is not possible.

Wii U eShop and anything related to Wii is completely separate. Moving your digital Wii stuff to Wii U has zero drawbacks as your Wii U is basically a Wii as well once you enter Wii Mode. The only thing you'll lose is support for the GCN controller if you happen to have used that for N64 games or something. All your Wii VC games will still be Wii VC games once they're on your Wii U in Wii Mode. If you want to turn those available on the Wii U VC into Wii U VC games, you'll need to pay the upgrade fee ($1 for NES, $1.50 for SNES - per title). You can play Wii games on the GamePad screen since the last big FW update but you still need to use Wii controllers.

The only drawback is that every game transferred to the WiiU can't be transferred back to the Wii.
Since the backwards compatibility is total once on Wii mode it doesn't matter if those games aren't available on the WiiU VC, because you will still play them as you were doing it on your regular Wii.
The only advantage is that the games that are on the WiiU VC will have a special discount price, so you will be able to upgrade them to WiiU VC games paying a small fee instead of the full price again. In doing that, you will be able to gain the ability to play those games with your gamepad and also their integrated miiverse functionality.

Thanks for all the quick answers everyone! much appreciated.

So there is no save state "suspend" mode? thats kind of a killer for me. Wait, is there a save/suspend feature for the "upgrade" titles?

I still have 10$ in credit on the old wii VC shop. what happens to that if i transfer my account?

Excited about some mario3d today!

This may be the wrong place to ask, but does anybody know of any good deals for Wii games on Black Friday? More specifically, does Skyward Sword ever go on sale for less than $50?

Yup - well, once you clear level 2 then you get level 1 again but with whole segments of platforms missing - then same again for level 4 (level 2 with chunks missing)

What got me was my 4 year olds ability to clear the first 2 levels, he can whizz through the first level without losing a life

There's a lot of people spending time with their families and still cooking turkeys hehe. Tonight will be a madhouse tho

It would be cool if it allowed for motion controls + gamepad. Like Pikmin 3.

Really tempted to grab Pikmin 3 off Newegg since it's $39.99 today ($50+ elsewhere). I just don't know if it's gonna get a good deal in the next week or so. Probably wouldn't be much lower than that.

If you do the transfer I believe your credit goes along for the ride with your games - I had 100 Nintendo points that were still available for use on the Wii VC after transferring to Wii U.

That was wrong information. The Wii Mode is still exactly like the Wii. Suspend states still exist, your old ones even transfer over (at least for games you didn't have to redownload in Wii Mode). What Sendou likely meant is that RESTORE POINTS don't exist in Wii Mode as those are a new Wii U VC feature. (A manually created save state that you can load back up when you want to) Suspends work exactly like on the actual Wii. Exactly the same.

Also, all the money you have in your Wii Shop account gets transferred as well. You lose nothing. Everything comes with you to your new console. Everything. Except for homebrew and illegal stuff, obviously.

I wasn't playing my Wii U much since I beat the launch games but Wind Waker HD abd SMB3DW has given me faith again.

Now if Nintendo could release a new Metroid game....
