Our first home...still very early :)

Jesus this game is so good, wow. I'm amazed at how much I'm enjoying it.

The crafting is so well done. The concept of having a wooden work table and a stone furnace to smelt iron ore in my intergalactic spaceship is amazing, haha.

How is this compared to Terraria? Much of the same or different?

my quick thoughts after a bit of playing starbound (aka not in depth at all)

it doesn't seem as polished as terraria (the walking animations are fine, but a lot of the quick move animations feel a bit rough... I don't feel like the monsters are charging me but that their sprite is being slid at me) but that makes sense as it's very early beta.
that being said even without following some of the development stuff it's obvious it's going to have a lot more to do and a lot more to explore.
It also feels a lot more designed to eat away at your time. I am sure that there will be ways to speed up how you do things later, but at least early on everything is painfully slow to do. Want to chop down a tree... it will take like 20 seconds. want to mine some ore... like 10-15 seconds per brick (with reduced time on bricks right next to the brick you are going for)

It's all slow enough that instead of deciding to just jump underground and explore like i would in terraria I am merely walking left and right hoping I find something that will speed up exploring underground.

again I obviously haven't had much time with starbound... but my first thoughts are quite favorable of it despite the time sink feel it has right now.

I abandoned the Food Fight quest. How do I get it back? Did I just lock myself out of further quests?

Yea there definitely has to be a way to speed things up.

Digging/mining is a huge pain in the ass. Not fun at all.

Anyone know how tech works? I found some called a pulse jump. But I dunno what it is or what it does

Also. Still no GAF server?

You know that you can make better tools with some cobblestone and wood right? The matter manipulator is just a starter tool and the next set of tools are stupidly fast by comparison.

Willing to go in on a 4-pack since I need 2 copies for me and my son. If anyone wants in, PM me.

Edit: Have 3 PMs, going with the first 2, if one falls through, I'll PM the 3rd one, but full up for now, thanks.

To the people worried about the mining speed. Get a pickaxe. Upgrade the pickaxe.

A stream last night had someone with a gold pickaxe and he was just plowing through the simple blocks.

I didn't know exactly how to but I figured there was some way to make stuff to do stuff faster, just haven't found the materials/ how to do so yet :P

as i said I wasn't very far in, but at the same time terraria gives you the stuff to explore underground properly from the start and just gets faster from there.

PLEASE tell me there's more spaceship play in the game.

I want to deck my ship out and I want to spend a lot of time there. Sure the planets are the star of the game but I want to to struggle to survive in my ship. Run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere, have a leak etc etc. Gravity style.

The developers were talking about this in a stream last night, they want to eventually have FTL-style space encounters. Probably won't be in for a while, but they've said this game will have substantial, free post-launch content. The lead developer, Tiy, had made a few tweets to the effect of "Fuck DLC" too.

I'd be interested in a 4 pack if there's any open. USA buyer, can PP right away. Thanks.

EDIT: Will probably pop back in at home and host a 4 pack, if anyone can wait a couple hours, shoot me a PM and we'll form a gang of 4.

Well the devs behind Terraria wanted full on multiplayer PVP like CTF. I know they're not the same guys but I won't hold them to that.

How does the multiplayer work here by the way? I got into a server and I was in the same world as my singleplayer game? So friends will be in my singleplayer world? Does the world depend on the server or the character? This is confusing.

this is awesome to hear, my wife and I will love it.

As for the fuck DLC mentality, while as a consumer, getting more content without having to pay for it is a good thing, the business man in me sighs a little bit at this. Assuming the big starbound upgrades are at least on par with Terraria I really wouldn't mind them you know charging 99 cents per upgrade or something like that. I really don't feel like that would make many people mad as it wouldn't be a crazy price for a good amount of new content, and it would give them a nice bonus revenue stream. (99 cents times lets say 500k copies in a year, is a quick and easy 350k to them (I took out the 30% steam fee)) which they could then take that money and use it to help put more content into the game quicker.

Free content is great, but they should have some way to take in more revenue so they can continue to work on the game worry free without having to hope that the game will continue to find more and more people who want to play it 18-24 months from now.

What are the chances of this getting featured during the christmas steam sale? I really want the game, but my backlog has reached disgusting proportions at this point and I probably won't have time to play until the christmas sale is over.

Iron hunting bow is a must!

I'm having real trouble finding any iron, just tiny specks here and there, need to go deeper.

edit: Holy crap, spoke too soon :D
I went down to an area filled with sand, took a little swing and caused an avalanche, dislodging a TON of iron.

Where is hunger indicator, except for situation when it pop out sometimes?

What exactly stats mean? Like, i made copper greaves and they gave me 54 of sword icon, instead of armor.

Btw i found whisky :P

I am slowly getting the hang of this game but I can't for the life of me find out how to make (background) wood walls.

Look at the updates as adding more value and incentive to new consumers to buy in rather than getting old consumers to chip in a little bit. They'll use part of the profits from every sale ever to reinvest into the game.

Also, I kinda am annoyed at games that split up user bases just to make some more money.

But I see your side as well. On the other hand, it doesn't seem like they are going to have a hard time in terms of revenue if this first day of early access is an indicator of continued success.
