Lmao, I had no idea you lost your pixels on death. I thought it was weird there was no penalty...
I think it's like 30 percent that you lose.
Edit: will be changing to 20 percent evidently.

Think of it as a minigame, you like minigames.
Gaf Server's Home Planet has no wood on it, people aren't gonna get very far if they make a new character on it.
Well, after school today I should be able to dive in more.
Much better

Indeed found it weird when i saw it first from what the hell is this? Then i died.
Sounds like a pretty shitty game. Is it 1080p, 60fps?
Played for probably like 5 hours last night. Spent most of it on the starter planet because I was unaware for the longest time what fuel for the ship was, had to look it up in the wiki, don't know if I missed a prompt in game. The fact that it runs on coal and wood is kind of dumb, figured it was actual fuel or something more special, even like bio-fuel, but whatever harvesting wood is crazy easy. I have like 2k wood reserves.
So far it's a great product as is, and I have no doubt it will get better and better as more content/features are implemented and things are refined. It's quite slow paced too, once I did realize what fuel was for the ship I visited like 6 planets and besides the starter planet, only one other had any kind of settlement on it for me to raid and loot blueprints and other things. So as it stand I still can't craft anything besides the two dozen or so basic items, despite having a huge reserve of iron and copper and other materials.
I really hate the star map though, it's too big and just a jumbled mess that's hard to navigate. Planets don't seem to have any rhyme or reason to them either based on distance to the sun or what sun type it is. The constellations are just random shapes too, and barely that.
I really don't care for creatures warping through you as well, changing direction is kind of a pain with the mouse, especially in a frenzied fight, and more importantly it kind of defeats the purpose of a shield, if you have it, because then you automatically lower it if you've been hit, which you will immediately after deflecting the first hit. Definitely could use some work and I'm sure with time I'll also get better at it. I'm just annoyed that I'm constantly dying because enemies are just warping through me and I'm proverbially stuck at like 400 pixels. That said enemy AI can be really stupid sometimes, I should probably just build myself a dirt bunker or platform every time I get into a serious fight and just shoot them with arrows.
Also crafting is annoying in regards to quantity only increasing by one and requiring clicking each time, Shift-click or Ctl-click should increase by 10 or some other factor, and just holding down on the quantity should have it increase exponentially the longer you hold it. Right now holding down does nothing. Can't remember if I tried manual input through numpad or keyboard, but that would be nice too if it's not there.
Right before logging I found a planet I like in a system with a lot of other planets or relatively low levels so I'm going to really dig in tonight when I get home, literally and figuratively. I've just been mining what I can see on the surface and exploring the easily accessed caves/crevasses.
you can type in the amount you want to craft by clicking in the number field.
I'm really curious if I'm playing "right". After you build a house, are people mining really deep down after a period of time, or is everyone running straight left & right and mining the surfaces?
I've found zero loot or anything remotely interesting.
Also, my starting planet has the special "feature" that every 1/2 hour or so some "event" happens and if you outside your home, you die - so thats curtailed the exploration part. I may be misunderstanding exactly what I need to do though...
The temp gauge is a huge improvement.
Speaking of warmth I think I had a weird glitch last night. Me and a friend were on the same planet but at different places and suddenly my whole screen went near completely white, I could barely see anything and my temp was going down crazy fast. The friend also on the planet had none of that.
Dug down pretty deep before I found someStill playing around on the first planet. Is iron really rare to find or is it only on certain planets?
Was your friend near a heat source while you were not?
Don't use any item on it. Highlight the crop when it is grown, and press E. That will get you the fruit/harvest/whatever and a seed back as well.
Yup, and middle clicking also works to harvest things. Some planets you may find things like eyeballs on the ground you can harvest this way.
I know there is already a tips and tricks post but I believe the following format and information is more useful.
First Things, First
Make sure you get all of your stuff out of your "ship locker".
To beam down to a planet hover your cursor over the telepad in the rear of your ship and press "E" or middle mouse click.
Once on your newfound "Homeworld" you use your "Matter Manipulator" to chop, dig, and collect.
Pay attention to the quests and follow them.
Surviving
Hunger: Shoot creatures with your "hunting bow" to obtain meat or craft a hoe and plant seeds to obtain food. Also some local plant life may have harvestable fruit you can eat.
Temperature: Are things a bit chilly on your home world? Well, build a campfire or place a furnace, torches, or basically any other fire source to stay warm. NOTE: There are TONS of items that warm you up like couches, burn barrels, and street lanterns BUT your cozy bed will do little to prevent you from becoming a Popsicle. NOTE 2: Planets get colder at night (although I have encountered at least one where it actually gets warmer - not sure if bug.) and I also believe rain causes your temperature to drop as well.
Health: Plant fibers are your HP bars best friend. Harvest as many as you can and take them to a spinning wheel. This will allow you to craft fabric which can be turned into bandages which can be turned into a prolonged life. You can also rest in a bed to slowly replenish missing health. NOTE: There are several items that heal you, such as red stimpacks and med kits.
Dying
Penalty: Currently there is a 30% pixel penalty for death. This means if you have 100 pixels and you die, you will respawn with 70.
Spawning: there is currently no way to "set spawn" on a planet. When you die you will spawn back in your Star Ship and when you beam down to the planet it will be the exact same place you beamed down to the first time.
Benefits: Dying will reset you hunger meter, fast travel you to your star ship, and keep the monsters gainfully employed.
Interacting With the World
Primary Interactions: Almost EVERYTHING in Starbound is done with the "E" key. Opening doors, harvesting your farm, and talking with the natives all include examples of what the "E" key does. NOTE: The middle mouse button functions EXACTLY like the "E" Key.
Gathering: You can literally gather ANYTHING you see with your Matter Manipulator. However, pickaxes are better for digging and axes are better for chopping. NOTE: You can chop with a pickaxe but it isn't nearly as effective as an axe. NOTE 2: Vines should be harvested with an axe.
Monsters (Mobs): There are 4 types of monsters (That I have encountered) that are present on any given planet. Passive, Aggressive (KoS), Heroic (MiniBoss?), and Boss. Passive mobs will leave you alone unless you attack them or one of their kin. Aggressive mobs will chase you, making a plethora of loud insulting noises (even farts and horse noises - gg Chucklefish). Most, if not all, heroic mobs are aggressive, have alot of health, and will typically drop a green or better item. Bosses should be self explanatory.
NPCs: Unlike other games of this genre, there are TONS of NPCs in Starbound. Guards, Airship Captains, Kings and Queens, merchants, random hermits, and many many many more. Depending on the situation, these NPCs may be aggressive or passive. Some may even be SUPER EXCITED to see you. (Im looking at you, Florans) To interact with an NPC, yep you guessed it, press the "E" key.
Travel
Fuel: Before you can even hope to go ANYWHERE your Star Ship requires fuel. There are two currently known ways of fueling your Star Ship and they are coal and unrefined wood. Yep, you read that right wood. To put fuel into your Star Ship access the fuel panel towards the front of the ship and drag and drop the appropriate items into the "gas tank" and press the fuel button.
Local Planetary System Travel: Once you are fuels up and ready to go take a seat in your captains chair. You will be presented with a map of your local planet and any moons it has. You can travel among these without using very much fuel.
Local Star System Travel: If you want to travel outsid of your local planetary system simply RIGHT CLICK your map. This will take you to the local star system map and show you all available planets that you can visit in your home system. As the distance between planets is larger this will consume more fuel than local planetary system travel.
Interstellar Travel: If you right click your map once more you will be presented with the Sector/Galaxy Star Map. (Everyone Starts in the Alpha Sector/Galaxy) You can click on any star and investigate available planets and moons in that Star System. Keep in mind that the farther away a star is from you, the more fuel it will take to get there.
Intergalactic Travel: Same as above but Between Sectors/Galaxies
Random Travel and Seeding: You can use the Random travel button to travel to a random location. (You don't say) You can also use the X and Y coordinates to find a planet someone else has discovered or provide other space farers with your location. (this is essentially a "seed" as the planet will be the same for everyone at those exact coordinates)
Multiplayer
Hosting and Joining: To host a game launch the server application and make sure port 21025 TCP is forwarded to your local IP. To join a game, launch the game application, go to multiplayer, and type in the server address. (For people connecting to their local server you may use 127.0.0.1)
Playing Together: Your buddy is on the exact opposite side of the galaxy from you and you dont have enough fuel to get to one another? Tough break. JUST KIDDING - simply click on the plus sign under your avatar in the top left of your screen, type in your buddies name and invite him to your party. Your buddy can now click on your avatar in the group window and instantly teleport to your Star Ship!
There are tons of other things I could add to this but it is already getting pretty long. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
any way to delete my character? don't like the look of it
Another bit for the OP GAF server section: Please make your character with your GAF user name so we can tell who's who. (it just shows your character name in chat, not your steam name or anything)
Remove the character file from Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\player
I'm not really making that a requirement. Never required players to do that on the Terraria server, and we will be getting some non-GAF on the server at some point.
I just explored a higher level planet came off of it with a tu-tu and horse head so that was pretty cool. However does anybody know how durability works on pick-axes? Currently mine's on 0 yet I'm still able to use it.
Glorious document that sums up the first hour of playing, at least in my experience.Someone posted a great newbie guide
Damaged tools work but are only as effective as the tier below - a damaged iron axe is only as good as a copper axe. I don't know if this kicks in at 0% durability or if it scales as it wears out.
Thanks, is there any way to replenish durability beyond building a new tool?
Okay, I'm in. I have no idea what this game is about, I just kinda skimmed through the OP. Looks fantastic, though.
Sorry if this has been asked, but can someone point me in the direction of setting up a dedicated server for this?
Sounds like a pretty shitty game. Is it 1080p, 60fps?
On what type of system, I have directions for a linux server.
Right now it's about galactic exploration/deforestation.
And dying.
As an American, this seems like something I can get behind.
Never played Terraria?
Played on the GAF server for a bit, but I left to do my own thing. Having everything build/explored just wasn't my cup of tea. But the game is fantastic.
