Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Wow so I went through all that trouble to forge a spawn beacon and now I have to make one again because I got killed.

Don't want to collect all that stuff again. This is kinda stupid. :/

I'm not gonna look at any Wikis or anything, I want to figure this out for myself. Seems fascinating, so far.

So I just got offered to participate in a 4 way pack for this game, and I have no idea what it's about.

Are we talking about Terraria on space? Is this game worth it?

"You have no idea"

Same dev, same type of world. Yup, it's pretty fucking similar to Terraria! The space ship is the hub btw, that's my interpretation of it.

So what's your goal with the driveby shitposting if you're just going to ignore everything?

And it's basically Terrarria 2, not sure exactly why you're expecting a dramatic change in gameplay.

You're not wrong that it's like Terraria. But that doesn't make the devs lazy or make this any less of a great game.

It's a 2D open world crafting/adventure genre. Terraria may have been the first but Starbound has improved on it in almost every way.

It's like saying modern warfare FPS devs are lazy because there was a counter strike or Blizzard was lazy creating World of Warcraft when Everquest was already out there.

That's a fair, albeit simplistic description. It's still a work in progress (some aspects are still rough/not implemented etc), but great fun already. If you liked Terraria, you'll like Starbound.

Any pro tips you guys have for finding silver would be more than welcome, can't progress at all now without it.

Played it for a little, seems quite addictive.

Got a pulse jump (double jump) tech and made my way to the UFO boss battle. No clue how you're supposed to beat that thing without cheesing it....or maybe that's the whole point.

Having a hell of a time trying to find the wood planks to build my crafting table... rough start, lol.

EDIT: Okay, yay, crafting table completed

I bought it, but never played it. Not really sure why, just never felt like installing it.

O_o

Wow, you really should play it, one of my favorite games of the past few years. Starbound is basically Terraria on steroids with a different theme. In other words, it's fucking awesome.

From what I've seen it's usually soil > rock > special > bedrock > special > bedrock > lava. First special layer and below have copious silver veins.

It can be really hard to see in some kinds of rocks too.

It has similarities to Terraria for sure, but it's a VASTLY different game. Much more fleshed out and immersive, with a huge game world to explore and enjoy.

And, it that is your "interpretation" then you have no idea what you are talking about. Either do some reading up on the game or be quiet young troll.

Well, since I'm getting into Starbound now, I don't really feel the need to go back and play Terraria.

It managed to take me away from Kerbal Space Program and Dead Rising 3... it's pretty fucking good.

If you don't like the art style then that's fine, but I think when your problem is with the genre rather than the game what you're doing isn't particularly productive.

Spent hours getting the materials to build the beacon. Didn't read the full quest description. Got wrecked and lost the beacon.

This game rules!

Since several updates have apparently hit since the server went up last night, server will go through maintenance later, maybe for about half an hour, so I can let the updates actually kick in.

I'm guessing maybe 8pm/9pm EST.

BTW, looking through the Starbound launcher, it had an ad there for private servers that can be rented out. My computer seems to be running ok, but if bandwith becomes an issue, I might consider shelling out some cash for one of those servers.

Any one that gotten as far as to kill the first bossand gotten the soldier tier armor? I though that once I got that. More armor upgrade would unlock. But so far I've gotten nothing, don't really know what to do from here on.

Can someone sell me on why I should buy this game in a quick paragraph?

My friend from back home and I have been desperately searching for a good multiplayer game to no avail (we are both gamers who idiotically bought Macbook Pros). If we generally enjoy ARPGs, MOBAs, and MMORPGs, is it likely we would dig this game?

Sorry if this is unanswerable, I would just like to hear directly from some GAFfers before making my purchase.

I would say yes. Lots of loot, procedural and random generation of worlds and dungeons, heavy on exploration.
