No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

This reveal dropped my jaw. I have ALWAYS ALWAYS wanted a game that would allow you to walk around on one full size to-scale planet, step into a spaceship and take off from ground through the atmosphere, enter space and fly all the way to another full-sized planet, enter it's atmosphere and pick a landing spot on it's surface to explore. It's the ultimate ambition for an adventure/exploration game. That feature alone sells me on the game a thousand times over.

Oculus Rift support would make me scream like a girl.

This game looks amazing. Love the art style! Can't wait to see more of it.

It's like if Noctis was actually good looking.

Htown, don't be stupid. Nobody else remembers Noctis.

As a fan of space games as old as Star Control(Let's put it this way, the first one was released in 1990) and the original Escape Velocity, I feel your pain.

Sadly I love space games in general and I never knew this existed, though. Sorry.

If it was online only i would have 0 interest in it. i dont mind if it as mp in in, but not as the only option.
Same with Star citizen, don't really care about the persistent universe, but i'm looking forward to the sp campaign and setting a a local server for me to play on.

I hope devs get the "online universe" fetish out of here system soon. Destiny, The Division, Deep Down, Titanfall etc. It's one of the reason's I'm holding back from jumping into next gen. It's one thing if it's f2p which I'm not a big fan of to begin with. But I'm not spending money on a disk that's dependent on connecting to your servers which you'll eventually turn off.

If they can't force system level drm on a console, force us to use their servers to play their games. Fuck that.

Way I see, games like destiny and The Division will be treated like something between a F2P and Subscription MMO, where they'll consistently release new content as dlc to purchase to keep income flowing. So I doubt the servers for things like this are going to be shortlived.

Also, I don't think Hello Games would have the DLC model in mind in either case.

I actually love this "fetish" they're getting. I've always wanted to play an MMO but hate the lackluster story/gameplay. With these games, I get both.

EDIT: Just for the record I'm not looking for any of that out of this game. If its like Terraria or Minecraft I'll be fine.

Do It!

I wonder if Shaid was trying to skype them after the reveal.

I'm guessing that he's already seen it since this tweet for Friday matches the game rather well

Ok the second OR support is announced for this game, I'm buying and building a gaming PC and whatever OR kit is available at the time.

so anyone else find it weird that this seems to be the generation of questionable mid/low tier developers redeeming themselves?

not saying Joe Danger was bad, put a lot of hours into it on PS3 but this is very ambitious compared to what they did then.

I thought about making a thread but I tend to shy away from such things, but basically here are 3 developers that have or are creating some of my most wanted next gen games and some of their previous work. Hopefully this is a trend that continues.

Hello Games - next/current:No Man's Sky - previous: Joe Danger, Joe Danger 2
Double Helix Games - next/current: Killer Instinct, Strider - previous: Battleship, GI Joe ect
Tequila Works - next/current Rime - previous: Deadlight

Easily the best thing shown. This is the kind of thing that is impressive to me. Innovative, huge scope, great style, and four people. Four! This is technically impressive, not games with huge teams that run at unstable framerates, pointless effects and average design.

Comparing Hello Games to Double Helix and Tequila works takes such a logical leap to connect the 2 I get the impression that you really want it to fit a narrative.

I mean, come on, Hello Games has 4 people. Stuff like Joe Danger is completely expected from a team that size and is even good considering the budget. Something like No Man's Sky is so ambitious that you begin to wonder if they robbed a bank to get the money to fund the project.

The 2 best kinds of videogame hype are:

1. Crazy ambitious games
2. New IP from an "already established as great" developer. (this can also count for massively improved sequels)

LIVE in that hype, man. It only comes along once every so often. You will be disappointed sometimes, but the journey is so good.

If I get burned I'm coming for you.

Well, the dawn of a new console gen is certainly a good time to do stuff like this. Could really help get unknown names up there. Rocksteady is a good example of that happening this past gen.

Sure, it's got procedural ruins, and oceans and planets and birds and shit, but does it have dogs.

#codghostwins

i want this game ;_;

Now I find myself wondering. If you can land, get out of your ship, and explore... Can someone come up and steal your ship?

Haha, it was the first thing I thought of when I watched the trailer (aside from 65dos)! Glad to know that at least one other person remembers the game.

Well, I think part of the reason that they can do this with only 4 people is because they mentioned at the VGX that everything is procedurally generated. All the graphics are made from mathematical formulas and not artists. So, I am guessing they just have 4 coders on this thing.

Are you an insider or something? As of now we have no information on platforms, unless I missed something.

Ahh interesting. I wonder if they brought it to him to check out, or how that went down. (if No Mans Sky is what he is referring to).

It seemed like quite a few people saw this early. I saw Brad Shoemaker mention it as the show was running that he was just waiting to see it pop up.

Threats; that's what I receive for trying to bring some hype to this place. And from someone who's been in the trenches with me, no less. I see how it is, Mr. Cuts.

Get hype doe, for real. This feels like a good one.
maybe. hopefully,

Both Brad and Jeff mentioned on Twitter that they saw the trailer yesterday and (I think?) met the devs.

Is there any word of platforms yet?

I'm pretty sure it's going to be on everything, at least eventually. Over the last 12 months they've supported, or are working on supporting, Linux, iOS, Mac, Android, Vita, Steambox in addition to consoles and PC.

If they got this game working on the vita, I will drop buckets. Also, still surprised by the huge leap from Joe Danger to No Man's Sky. Its the same sudden shift like Rocksteady making an epic FPS to an even more epic Batman series.

Well yeah, I would imagine this may have gotten passed around to journos here due to the VGX presentation, Geoff keeps this kind kf stuff secret from us, but im sure he lets allot of these guys on the inside see it early.

Its possible thats how Shabid saw it, but considering hes in london at Sony, he is a staple of Sonys Indie initative, and im pretty sure he signed Joe Danger with its original exclusivity deal i would not be shocked if they offer Shahid an oppritunity to see it.

That opening sequence I was thinking:

"Bullshit, there's no way you can do that. You can't just get in a ship and seamlessly fly off into space and explore other systems."

so anyone else find it weird that this seems to be the generation of questionable mid/low tier developers redeeming themselves?

[...]

Hasn't really happened though. Joe Danger was well received so Hello Games don't need "redeeming" (and we don't actually know how No Man's Sky is going to turn out beyond the fantastic direction/scope/ambition on display), KI has gotten pretty darn mediocre reviews, and we don't know much enough about Rime (again, beyond stylistically looking awesome) at this point.

This is what next gen should be, a game that seems so impossible I have to play it to believe it. This game just shot to the top of my radar.

I hate this procedural shit. How about Developers actually start paying attention to things like level design and actually make an effort to specifically tailor levels for maximum enjoyment. Procedurally designed levels and areas will never ever be as good.

Four person dev team.

Procedural developed content allows for near infinite possibilities. It doesn't work or apply to every game, but for a game about exploring an entire universe of planets.

It's perfect.

I wish more games were this ambitious.

OMG you guys, I can't wait for this game! This will be so awesome!

Oh. So, vaporware, then?

No, just procedural content.

It means that most of those planets will be randomly generated probably also including ships, buildings and rest of things (according to trailer).

For example each world you create currently in Minecraft is size of real world planet Neptune.
Dward Fortress procedural generation include movement of tectonic plates inside planet.

It basically means with this they can create world as big as they want but problem here will be with delivering story or some handcrafted elements.

Game will live depending what we will be doing in that game. Also space travel needs to be addressed because moving realisticaly from one planet to another could take hours if not days. I assume it will be something like Evochrone mercenary where you have jumpdrive and thrusters with infinite speed.

It would be lovely if this game would include some economy elements like finding planet with some very rare material and thanks to this your shipyard can now build new type of engines...

Correct me if I am wrong, but Minecraft had basically two people working on it at the start. Notch, a music/sound person (C418), and maybe one other person helping occasionally.

Minecraft ended up not being vaporware, and has become a pretty well-known and popular game. :)

Dismissing a group merely because they have 4 people seems pretty insulting. Maybe they won't succeed, but group size does not guarantee success or failure.
