No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

Do we have an idea what you'll be doing in this randomly generated galaxy yet? I'm pretty interested to know if there will be a set "story" or something that just shifts a bit depending on what your game looks like, or if it's all MP, or if it's just goalless exploration.

Pure guess, but it looks like there's a war or something going on. Different factions, etc is something I expect we'll see, perhaps some kind of malevolent AI (in the form of that structure we see as soon the ship leaves the atmosphere)..

Apart from that, I guess it'll just be to survive in the universe. Help out any towns/outposts you find, perhaps even establish and support your own outpost/town on a uninhabited Planet, etc.

am i the only one skeptical they can pull this off with a four man team? if they were like thegamecompany with ssm backing i would be more trusting etc

Looks pretty good, definitely my type of game. This better be released on PC as well.

Also, on a completely random note, the mothership reminds me of the Tet from the movie Oblivion.

Yep,

Looks almost identical.

Undead Labs are a relatively small team and they pulled off the incredible State of Decay. I think they'll pull it off...

Only time will tell. Looks like a lot has been done already. Maybe they work harder than other studios and like to put out games in a respectable time, who knows.

So is this co-op? Online only? Things I would like to know.

They're looking for people according to their website, so I'm almost tempted to apply as an animator there...

They can probably get a ton via crowd-funding now with all this buzz, but it isn't that hard to believe. Routine is only being developed by two people, Banished is being developed by one person and The Forest is also similar.

Pardon the ignorance, who is that? Guessing he works for Sony?

Yeah he works for Sony computer entertainment Europe. Hes a senior busniess development manager for playstation and one of his main responsibilities is getting new content/signing developers for playstation devices.

Hes also really popular with the indie community. Quite a few devs have attributed him as being part of why they chose to work with Sony.

These guys really screwed me up, now I cant even really think about many other games. Its gonna be rough if we dont get some new information soon, the have to be swimming in messages from fans/"journolists"/and publishers by now.

It looks like the witness had a child with destiny and starbound. I love the colors they have chosen.

I hope there is some kind of online compjonent, even if iy's only Demon's souls like (phantoms, tendancies...)

It's like Destiny, but ten times more interesting. Also, it still blows my mind that only four people are working on this. Just... how?! The highlight of yesterday's VGX (other than Joel Banderas), was McHale's genuine astonishment at the revelation that a team so small is making something so grand and ambitious. I don't know how they're doing it - I imagine witchcraft and sorcery is involved somehow - but major kudos to the folks over at Hello Games for attempting such a feat.

I'm trying not to get hyped by this. Seems like Starbound but 3D/First person. I love me some randomly/procedurally generated stuff. Ideally would love a PC version if this is online/multiplayer as it'd be easier to play with my friends.

Looks soo cool. Hope we see more of this at E3.

Do we know platforms yet?

And ETA ?

Only a vague reference to next gen and no ETA from what I've seen.

Some titbits of info from various sources...

The planets will have their own ecology and ecosystem, according to Hello Games' Sean Murray, who noted "We're all playing in the same universe." So the stars you see in the sky are actually other planets that other players are playing on. Madness!

Sean Murray from Hello Games stooped by to discuss how the game is about exploration, and takes place in a sci-fi setting.

It’s more than a persistent world, and you can fly to various planets in your spaceship.

“If you see the stars, those are real stars, they have their own planets around them, and you can go there,” said Murray. “It’s a science-fiction game, but it’s not like most other sci-fi games. We set out to make a game that challenges what it means to be next-gen, and what it means to be an indie title.

“It’s going to mess with people’s perceptions of Hello Games, and I have no idea how people will react. It’s different, and pretty much the furthest thing from what we’ve done before.”

It’s a first-person game, some space and planet combat, and is a real world and real living universe. It’s an “adversarial” universe.

These planets have an ecology, ecosystem and you are not necessarily at the top of the chain. It’s a massively multiplayer world.

"It's a huge game," said Hello Games' Sean Murray. "We wanted to make a game about exploration. And we wanted to make something that was real."

Murray said that, on planets, if you can see it — whether it be a mountain miles away in the distance — you can walk there. The game's persistent world is being created by the small team at Hello Games, and puts players into an ecosystem where they're not at the top of the food chain, Murray said. Space-based combat against other players and capital ships appears to be a major component of No Man's Sky.

Lol they said on Twitter last night that their mail server is now down lol but could still be contacted throughout twitter.

perhaps my dreams for this are too big but I'm hoping for something like elite

I want to explore and find meaningful stuff, trade and sell things, upgrade and buy ships etc

Procedural generated content can do miracles if well implemented. But they will certainly grow the team going forward.

I'm surprised by how similar it looks to Enemy Starfighter, though much more advanced. Different genres as well. They both obviously have been inspired by Homeworld when it comes to space.

Their challenge will be keep the procedurally generated worlds interesting. I'm hoping this isn't another spore. I was so hyped for that :(
