Now please go buy all their albums, as they're awesome but no one seems to know who they are :(

More people should be into 65daysofstatic for shower.

As someone who was bowled over by the exploratory possibilities of Mercenary and Elite back in the day, this is some kind of space sex magic right here.

Procedural content will bring limitations, but I think it depends on the implementation; real life is ultimately procedural, it's just complicated by huge numbers of variables. If they can introduce sufficient variables then it's -possible- that procedural could produce some startling results. Only 4 devs I know, but you never know. Just think what a major developer could do with procedural generation if the publishers let them. I suppose SOE is doing that right now though.

Just what's shown in the trailer is exciting enough at this point though. I'd settle for a single planet or solar system, anything more is bonus, unless it takes away from the overall game.

Please do not sign an exclusivity deal.

I doubt it, this is the kind of response indie devs dream about. If they play their cards right they have the chance to have an 'Amnesia' situation and pretty much be financial secure, independent and in control of their IPs for life.

To me this is a game i always wanted yes we have Star Citizen and others on the horizon. But what i like the most is going from planets to galaxy's and star systems where i can land on a planet and just do stuff but seeing a star there and go there in going through the atmosphere and landing is a dream come true.

Awww yissss.

i really like the simple, cartooniness of the art direction. it captures the wonder and alieness of these planets very effectively. it's cool that they exist but i find stuff like star citizen dry and sterile, yet i was immediately hooked by the more abstract representation here. i really want to explore these places.

Next gen Minecraft. I'm calling it right now.

Do we have an idea what you'll be doing in this randomly generated galaxy yet? I'm pretty interested to know if there will be a set "story" or something that just shifts a bit depending on what your game looks like, or if it's all MP, or if it's just goalless exploration.

I have the same question. I watched VGX, then the trailer again. Everyone is psyched for this, and it seems to be quite a technical accomplishment for a small team, but what is the gameplay? Is there combat, resource management, character development, strategy or something else? The only real "action" I saw was a ship shooting through an asteroid. It does appear to be heavily exploration based but otherwise I have no idea of the point of the game.

There's combat, but it seems to primarily be an exploration game...

Murray says, "We wanted to make a game about exploration, and we wanted to make a game that was real. If you can see it, you can walk there, you can explore it. The planet on the horizon is a real place." No Man's Sky is a departure in many ways from the studio's Joe Danger series. The game will be multiplayer, and it will have a persistent, procedurally-generated world. Murray added that every star in the night sky is another solar system to explore, with planets and ecosystems of their own. No release date has been announced.

I was literally dreaming of something less ambitious than this but almost exactly alike the other month and had that stuck in my head.

Ever watch that documentary Alien Planet? This seems so much like that, my hype is through all roofs.

Announce consoles and expected release frame and a kickstarter so I can buy you right fucking now.

This game is just stupidly ambitious. Awesome!

Also, I'd prefer a single player sandbox game, but then it hit me. If all the stars in the sky can be visited, and players are spread all over the galaxy, then running into someone randomly is going to be an event of its own. Space is big, after all. Really, really big.

So where are all those tools making 'all indie games are boring' threads now?

-

Looks incredibly ambitious. Thinking about exploring a universe with some of my friends is getting me very excited.

One thing that would worry me with the small development team is limited alien/enemy types aka like every 3rd planet in the universe being populated by giant sand worms

You're not happy with more sand worms?!

But yeah, see your point. If this game had been in development for the last 6 years, then I could see it having a lot of variety in content.

I have a feeling the game will be only available on a single platform first. there is no way a game with this scale can be ported onto 3 platforms with just 4 people.

it will probably be similar to joe danger eg: PS3 for 2010, xbox for 2011 and PC for 2013

They could be friend or foe.....they could shoot you in the face on some god forsaken planet, only to leave you as food for the fish.

Or a group could come across an abandoned building/ or town. Establish a nice little settlement for people to come to and share stories of their discoveries.

We can fly the galaxy together, or face the void alone.

I think it looks great and definitely has my interest. I'm not going to hype too much pressure onto a 4 man development team for something of this scale though. Just gonna see how it goes. Very positive so far though.

Wow. I'm almost certainly sold on this title.

Also I'm not sure whether I'm surprised at how few developers are working on this or on how inefficient some of the larger studios can be in terms of resource-management. If development companies were a bit more creative and effective with their resources we'd have many more unique and creative titles such as No Man's Sky, but that is beside the point for this topic...

This game looks awesome!

The game is a fantastic achievement for a 4-person team.

However, procedural generation is not a panacea. It's great to generate stuff trees, or leaves, grass, etc but not dungeons, cities or planets.

Furthermore, the game graphics/physics/collisions/animation are not impressive. The art style and colors are great, but that's about it.

Gameplay is going to be key and the interaction with the world is going to need a lot of polish, something I doubt such a small team can accomplish.

Let's see if they can make me eat my words.

While I think it looks interesting, I am trying to understand why everyone is going crazy about this. I think it looks cool, them bragging about everything being procedural is actually a big negative to me as I've never played a game with generated anything that I thought the terrain, items, whatever were very interesting. I feel like I'm missing something here and I want to know what that is.

Out of everything they showed at the vgx, this was the one game that got my attention and curiosity. Will be keeping an eye out for it

There aren't many games that allow you to explore a world, jump into a space ship, pilot it yourself out of orbit, engage in a space battle, fly to another planet, enter the orbit, set it down, climb out and then explore that world.

And by "not many" I mean "literally none."

Granted, and like I said it looks pretty interesting. I'm just having a hard time figuring out how it goes from interesting to the levels of enthusiasm that people are showing it. If that specific thing is why, then I'll just be quiet and hope that when it comes out it's fun.

God, the hours I will spend just being an explorer. But what really excites me is the promise of everything being untamed and chaotic just like the universe. I can really see this being an instant classic. But for now, I will say that at least the potential is there. That stand out 'it' factor is just so strong.

There were one or two projects but I think they never really were released.

Thats funny, just the other day I was thinking about how someone should create an awesome procedurally generated space exploration game, although my idea had a strong emphasis on story and your actual spacecraft/crew. This game looks like it will definitely scratch that itch.

Looks incredible but I have to remain skeptical thanks to Spore. If it can be as great as the trailer though, oof.

To be honest, I don't even need a story in a game like this. Just put me in the game, toss in some nice ambient music and let me loose to explore, discover and find my own fun and danger. This is the perfect formula with procedural worlds and space.

This is the best game revealed for 2014 so far. I can't wait to play this, hopefully it'll come for the PS4.

I mean, look at it... amazing.

Every time I see the trailer I want it more and more.

This game was basically the only thing that interested me in VGX x). The gameplay looked interesting. Just little bit afraid that there are only handful of planet to explore or that they are just copy-pastes.

good work guys, keep it up. don't forget to take stretch breaks and shit or you'll end up with a nagging ballistic injury for the rest of your life.
