i really like the simple, cartooniness of the art direction. it captures the wonder and alieness of these planets very effectively. it's cool that they exist but i find stuff like star citizen dry and sterile, yet i was immediately hooked by the more abstract representation here. i really want to explore these places.
I doubt it, this is the kind of response indie devs dream about. If they play their cards right they have the chance to have an 'Amnesia' situation and pretty much be financial secure, independent and in control of their IPs for life.
Do we have an idea what you'll be doing in this randomly generated galaxy yet? I'm pretty interested to know if there will be a set "story" or something that just shifts a bit depending on what your game looks like, or if it's all MP, or if it's just goalless exploration.
I have the same question. I watched VGX, then the trailer again. Everyone is psyched for this, and it seems to be quite a technical accomplishment for a small team, but what is the gameplay? Is there combat, resource management, character development, strategy or something else? The only real "action" I saw was a ship shooting through an asteroid. It does appear to be heavily exploration based but otherwise I have no idea of the point of the game.
Murray says, "We wanted to make a game about exploration, and we wanted to make a game that was real. If you can see it, you can walk there, you can explore it. The planet on the horizon is a real place." No Man's Sky is a departure in many ways from the studio's Joe Danger series. The game will be multiplayer, and it will have a persistent, procedurally-generated world. Murray added that every star in the night sky is another solar system to explore, with planets and ecosystems of their own. No release date has been announced.

There's combat, but it seems to primarily be an exploration game...

One thing that would worry me with the small development team is limited alien/enemy types aka like every 3rd planet in the universe being populated by giant sand worms
This game is just stupidly ambitious. Awesome!
Also, I'd prefer a single player sandbox game, but then it hit me. If all the stars in the sky can be visited, and players are spread all over the galaxy, then running into someone randomly is going to be an event of its own. Space is big, after all. Really, really big.
While I think it looks interesting, I am trying to understand why everyone is going crazy about this. I think it looks cool, them bragging about everything being procedural is actually a big negative to me as I've never played a game with generated anything that I thought the terrain, items, whatever were very interesting. I feel like I'm missing something here and I want to know what that is.
There aren't many games that allow you to explore a world, jump into a space ship, pilot it yourself out of orbit, engage in a space battle, fly to another planet, enter the orbit, set it down, climb out and then explore that world.
And by "not many" I mean "literally none."
There were one or two projects but I think they never really were released. There aren't many games that allow you to explore a world, jump into a space ship, pilot it yourself out of orbit, engage in a space battle, fly to another planet, enter the orbit, set it down, climb out and then explore that world.

I was literally dreaming of something less ambitious than this but almost exactly alike the other month and had that stuck in my head.
I'm just curious would people be excited if only the trailer was shown and no sweet talk from the dev.
Thats funny, just the other day I was thinking about how someone should create an awesome procedurally generated space exploration game, although my idea had a strong emphasis on story and your actual spacecraft/crew. This game looks like it will definitely scratch that itch.
Oh god, it's a new generation of Elite. I've been waiting, what, 30 years for a new one?
