No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

Sony attempting a money hat?

ukjy1SN.png

Would be a massive get if it happens, but what would it mean for a PC version?

Star Citizen has proven that there's a massively underserved market for games like this on PC. Going with console exclusivity would leave a lot of money on the table.

Anyway, Rock Paper Shotgun will be doing a more detailed piece on this shortly so I'd be surprised if it doesn't end up on PC.

Wow. Just saw the trailer.

WANT. Shot right to the top of my most anticipated list.

Looks amazing but I have my doubts over the small development team. Looking forward to more news of this in the future.

A small development team is what gives me hope. 4 focused individuals with a clear vision in mind instead of a bloated team of hundreds all sticking their hands in the pot trying to add their own flavor to the recipe. You don't need a giant team, millions of dollars and a bunch of suits running around directing things in order to create an amazing experience. All you need is some talent, freedom and a great idea.

Weren't RPS also reporting on Everybody's Gone to Rapture before Sony exclusivity was announced?

I can see Sony grabbing it to be honest. A small developer like Hello Games will reach a point where they need to secure funding...just like TCR with Rapture and Undead Labs with State of Decay.

The only real question is will Sony, if they do grab exclusivity, push Hello to go full PS4 exclusivity or allow for a PC release at some point...

TCR not releasing rapture on PC any more suggests it will be locked to the PS4 if any exclusivity deal happens.

Hello used Pub Fund previously but the terms of the contract still allowed Joe Danger to show up on other platforms so maybe it wouldn't be exclusive for good.

Ah, totally forgot about the Pub Fund. Is that something Sony are still doing? Haven't heard about it in so long that I figured they quietly dropped it...

I'm just concerned that their their vision might be too ambitious for four individuals. I hope you're right though.

Then why would they have waste time on this if they weren't up for it?

A preview is coming tomorrow so the game must be in pretty good shape.

Why would Shahid talking to the team mean that he's going for an exclusivity deal? Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't he there for developer relations? I would have thought he would just be talking to them about getting it on the PS4.

Well, I am not expecting some grand, big budget experience or even perfect gameplay for that matter. But if they have enough assets in place for the procedurally generated worlds and space to offer atmosphere, beauty, variety and true unpredictability then the fun part will take care of itself.

Come on man, a lot of over-ambitious projects failed to deliver on their promises. I'm not saying this game is doomed to fail because of the small team, I just want to see more before I jump on the hype train.

Agreed. I don't want to set my expectations too high.

Super impressive. Easily the best thing on the absolute crap that was the VGX. I still cant get around only 4 people making this thing. I guess that's where all the procedurally generated stuff comes in.

AAA publishers give you a high res dog, a free fall section or mechs and parkour and call it groundbreaking. Four guys in Guildford manage to make a completely procedurally generated universe simulator. This was my eye opening moment on indies. Its pretty clear that the future of innovation in gaming lies with them.

It doesn't, but the potential is there for Sony to go for exclusivity as they did with Rapture.

Small developer, limited resources (although they could tap the Pub Fund if that's still a thing), they'll reach a point where either they have to crowd fund or accept an exclusivity from one of the big players.

He does allot of things with devs, but he is also responsible for signing them to playstation platforms (I would assume that includes exclusivity terms).

However I would not just think Sony is going to try and lock it down, I could see Sony giving them options. They could offer them full exclusivity and all of the rescources that come with that, or they could go pub fund and it would be timed exclusive to PS4, or they could just offer them support for "first on console" rights.

Its gotta be tempting for a team like Hello to really consider an offer from a pub like Sony as they dont dictate what the developers do with the game, and they have a ton of resources that a kickstarter would not garuntee.

My first guess is that it will be PS4/PC first, then maybe Xbone later.

This reminds me a lot of that Infinity procedural space game that was being worked on a while ago. No Man's Sky seems to be further along though.

I love how you can just hop in your ship, take off and fly straight out of the atmosphere. I keep watching the trailer and even this small glimpse is absolutely breathtaking.

A game like this doesn't really get anything from going exclusive. It has such a good concept that it will pretty much market itself and going to a single platform will limit its sales a lot.

Preach my friend.

I am so disenfranchised by the majority of AAA games at this point. Indie games bring a spark of light into this stale industry.

I would actually hate him (and by extension sony) forever if they money hat this.

I think the odds are strong someone will buy some kind of exclusivity on this, be it forever or short time period. It's the kind of game that will fit into a summer of arcade kind of showcase or play well at a press conference.

Very nice, but need to see more.
So far very impressive for only 4 people I mean, it seem quite complete content that you don't need 100 artists, 50 programmers etc..

That's something MS and many others need to learn from it. No need 400+ people studio.

This is relevant to my interest, thanks for the information.

This is the kind if game that deserves to be played on PC. The modding community alone will make this amazing looking game even better.

The popularity of these types of games is astounding on PC. Statbound, a 2D procedurally generated Minecraft/Metroidvania-lite, is sitting at around 100,000 concurrent players right now. The topper is the game is in early access alpha with not all the content and bugs galore.

I actually don't think so. I mean I have no idea about prgoramming but just from the pure concept it's not very different from e.g. Starbound, only that it's 3d instead of 2d but how much of a difference does thast make if we're talking procedually generated planets just like Minecraft is already doing, only the graphics are a little bit more pretty.

Why does everyone talk like that indicates some sort of Playstation exclusivity?
Until something other is stated that just looks like it's coming to Playstation like so many Indies.

I am so disenfranchised by the majority of AAA games at this point. Indie games bring a spark of light into this stale industry.

It really puts things into perspective when something like this comes along from out of left field and immediately just stands out. I can't deny that I still love many of the big budget AAA games, but deep inside I long for something fresh and straight forward. Something that does not come out of that bloated, mega-budget mold that many publishers are so insistent is necessary in order to meet their ever increasingly ridiculous demand for profit. But what they fail to realize, is that you can't throw money in the oven and expect gold to come out. As talent and having a good idea is priceless, and that is where greatness always comes from first.

A greenlight system on the consoles would be so sweet

No it wouldn't, Greenlight is an incredibly flawed system. The way Sony are handling indies with PS4 right now is fine.

Although being able to Kickstart games from the PS4 would be pretty sweet. Maybe a Kickstarter app for the PS4 that just centres around the Games section or something?

I feel like this is just spore all over. None of the footage showed me any good gameplay so I can't say I see where the excitement comes from but whatever.

Were platforms announced last night? I remember there being some confusion.

I thought it looked like a poverty Destiny

Not related to Destiny in the least.

Defintley going to be more open and explorations based than Destiny. If you think Destiny is going to be anything more than linear, you have another thing coming.

This must be the space game GopherD was talking about. I wonder if this will be a mmorpg. Looks like the perfect setting for one. Imagine the space fights.

The excitement comes from the idea of gorgeous procedural worlds and space to explore. It's simplistic in it's approach, but at the same time looks bold, fresh and full of atmosphere and immersion. Sometimes only a few key ingredients is all it takes.

Has anything been released about what is done in the game other than explore? Is it puzzles or rpg/looting? Hard to tell what the actual point of the exploration is, unless its exploration for explorations sake, which could be cool i suppose.

I went from not knowing I needed the game in my life to feeling starved by it's current unavailability. The promise this game holds has grabbed a stranglehold on my imagination. Can't wait for Destructoid's profile tomorrow!

It seemed like they left that portion intentionally obtuse.

Due to it being a 4 man team they can only work on one platform at a time and that platform will be PS4. PS4 dev kits were out there earlier since Sony has been courting indy devs for a long time and MS didn't give a shit about them before the 180.

Looks really good, but considering I'm not a fan of procedural created worlds and we barely know what you do in the game, I'll be cautiously optimistic instead of just optimistic.
