Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Aw shit, launcher compressing.

What am I even doing with my life.

Sitting up at 1am on a Tuesday watching a stream of a guy compiling code for a video game that's not even out yet while an awesome 90's JRPG soundtrack plays in the background.

Awesome, huh? I have to admit this is probably the nerdiest thing I've ever done.

The music is good!

And they use GVIM! RESPECT FOR DEVELOPER++

*edit* Linux builds done, Windows build nearly done. They have to upload and test on Steam before they mark it as live.

From Stream:
"I am done with building the Linux builds and the launcher.

Now we wait. Kyren is halfway done with the windows build.

Then we will upload to steam and test,

Finally we will mark it as live".

Also, the Village theme from Xenogears is so damn upbeat and happy. So good.

I've never played Xenogears...

I've always wanted to, though, just never got around to it.

Anyway, bed time for me soon, so I won't be updating this game until tomorrow. My wife will probably update the PC, as she stays up really late anyway, and is dying for this update. I got to work tomorrow!

This game went off my radar for a while, so I'm glad the Beta is getting some love around here.

After checking out the recent progress and checking through this thread, I'm suddenly very interested. Would the quickest way to get involved be to just buy the low tier and grab the Steam key?

I tried Terraria for a bit and enjoyed it, but never got very far. Never got around to playing with others despite wanting to. Haven't gone back to it on PC, but it's a game I think I'd put a lot of time into on Vita. (No mention of Starbound eventually coming to Vita, right...?)

So, if I jumped in what's the first thing I should do? Just wander off and explore? Hook up with GAF? I love going into this sort of thing blind, but it'd be good to have at least a small idea.

Plus I'm a sucker for sci-fi (the No Man's Sky news has me juzzing in me troosers), and this looks like a cute little alternative to tide me over for a while.

So i never understood the point of playing terraria... is starbound any different?

whats the main hook to keep playing the game?

How did you not understand the point of Terraria?

Survive your first night.
Dig down to upgrade your equipment.
Fight the bosses one by one.
Start hard mode.
Combat the spread of corruption.
Fight the bosses one by one.
Win.

Terraria was pretty damn linear for all that it allowed open exploration with procedurally generated worlds. If you had trouble figuring out the "point" of a game that progressed on boss fights, I'm not certain you're going to enjoy Starbound much.

In terraria the main appeal was getting loot, and improving your character's combat abilities.
Because the game forced you to build houses for NPCs to move into, there was some need to build too.
While you could build nice looking things in the game, it didn't really seem worth it to me to invest a lot of time into.

Starbound looks to follow the idea of character progression being the main hook, but it seems that exploration and building are both deeper, and that's in a game that's far from finished.

Oh, I didn't know terraria was so linear actually. For the longest time I thought it was 2d mine craft. I watched a few streamers play it and they just having around their house and attacking trees.

So does starbound follow a similar formula?

and unlike Terraria this game will be moddable from the ground up

Call Terraria linear is far to simplistic for the game it is.

For the update....sigh, no key binding? I'm left handed and play with WASD hurt me so much.

The final game plan is to have a main quest chain to follow though the game, which likely will be liner, but there should be random side quests too. The game will still be 2d mine craft in space, so that should keep people entertained.

The prospect of being able to play again has me actually beaming with delight, making mods in the downtime is great but, man I want to play so bad.

Oh man this Xenogears music.

fuuuuuuuu I wasn't going to play starbound tonight but looks like I am thanks to that planet list posted a while ago. I want to get some tech stuff already.

I didn't plan on playing much anyways, but I at least wanted to play enough to see if my settlement and warehouse survived.

Looking at the stream: (S?)He's playing whack-a-mole with steam friend invites? Hammering Ignore All while a constant barrage of request popups come up. Huh. That's a way to spend your time, too.... I guess.

Edit: 12KB/s? Is that machine using a V90 modem link to valve or what?

Omni made the mistake of starting up Steam on-stream. He's now made it clear that he's not adding anyone and to prove the point he's ignoring friend invites en-masse. Hilarious.

Reminds me of the people who send Steam friend invites during Giant Bomb livestreams.

It's really annoying.

One invite person got creative: "ILL SUCK YOUR DICK FOR CASH OMNI." There was much loling in the chat.

And now, after checking that the update works on his end... He's now playing Rogue Legacy. What a troll, lol.
