Metal Gear Solid V is having an identity crisis

I'm going to preface this by saying I love the MGS series. It's probably my favorite series of all time. So I might be a little more vocal about the direction the series goes than others. Also, I'd like to add that I did indeed like MGS4. It wasn't a disappointment to me, but it wasn't the best game in the series (MGS3 takes that honor).

In this thread, I want to discuss MGSV, what it is, and what it's trying to be, which, to me, has become more and more confusing over the past few months.

Potential spoilers for the series follow.

Ground Zeroes Introduction and first trailer -- Next gen MGS with Big Boss!

Initially, if you all remember correctly, the first glimpse of a new Metal Gear game came with a lovely trailer for Ground Zeroes, with a bunch of exposition and a little gameplay at the end, followed by a more extended gameplay trailer of the first mission of the game. This, of course, piqued my interest, because it looked to be a sequel to MGS3/Peace Walker. The new villain, Skull Face, also had a very cool MGS-villain vibe that I really got behind. This was the Metal Gear I wanted for next-gen. "Kept you waiting, huh?" and all that. I was very excited.

The Phantom Pain - MGS fans eat it up

Then came something even more exciting. That weird reveal for The Phantom Pain, which then, no one really knew was MGSV (but many speculated such). It looked so crazy and weird that of course being an MGS fan I was interested in it for it's uniqueness alone. Once it was revealed to be MGSV I was even more excited. I started piecing together what the whole package could be: GZ would be the first half of the game, and TPP the second , where Big Boss wakes up in a hospital many years later and we go through that portion of the game. Fans went wild analyzing and overanalyzing the story ramifications -- who was who, what meant what, when it actually took place, "wait, was that Volgin?", etc. And I was one of them. This, for me, was the high point of the hype.

At this point, the game was shaping up to be the next great Metal Gear. Looks to have everything I love about it: exciting premise, awesome stealth mechanics (as usual), a weird and complex storyline (espcially that TPP reveal trailer -- what a trailer, it was!), and some really unique characters.

Blurring the Lines

Then, somewhere along the line, they started blurring what MGSV is: Ground Zeroes is a separate game; TPP is the "real" MGSV; GZ is linear ("classic", I'll call it); TPP is...open world?; GZ has a "mission-select" structure? -- what...wait? What is going on with this game now?

With what at first started as an awesome sounding MGS game, soon turned into a very worrisome next entry in the franchise, suffering from some sort of identity crisis.

In GZ, we've only seen one mission -- and on top of that, we've seen that same mission over and over again. Does this mean they're adopting a Peace Waker style bite-site mission structure with optional mission objectives? As a MGS fan, that makes no sense to me. I'm all for progress, but this feels more like a step back then a step forward.

In TPP, what started as a surreal, bat-shit crazy MGS game (with that glorious Kojima-y initial trailer) has become MGS meets Red Dead Redemption with it's open-world structure. The open world looks so vast and boring that they had to fast-forward the gameplay trailer to get to the "good stuff". Granted, the stealth system still looks engaging and fun,and if the initial trailer is anything to go of, the story looks unique and interesting, but I really can't get past the open world structure. Open world improves many games, but I can't see how it will improve MGS, only make it more tedious and boring -- waiting long stretches of time between gameplay segments via travelling, only to spend some more time in cutscenes.

That, and lately the gameplay shown looks a lot more like Splinter Cell or a regular third-person-shooter than it does Metal Gear.

Conclusion

I could be going crazy. I could just be a deluded fanboy of the series that is worrying about stuff for no reason. But to me, I don't think MGSV really knows what it "is" anymore. Is it an MGS game still? Is it an open-world game? Is it an action game instead of a stealth game? Is it a mission-by-mission game (a la Splinter Cell)? I'm not sure, and I don't think it is either. It's even more apparent when they're releasing GZ completely stand-alone and well before MGSV. For all we know, it could play differently than TPP does (the linearity sure will).

I could be wrong, though. And I hope I am. Kojima has fooled me before. I thought MGS3 was going to be a step back when it was first announced as a prequel, and that turned out to be my favorite game in the series. It just seems like MGSV is trying to be a lot of things the series has never been before, and it could be suffering for it. As a fan, I just want the game promised in those initial couple of trailers: a Next gen Metal Gear starring Big Boss. But as a gamer, I guess I want an open world Metal Gear Solid with easier stealth gameplay and more handholding...right?

Considering we've only heard snippets of info, I honestly don't want to jump the gun in coming to any conclusions. From what I've seen, it basically just looks like a bigger Metal Gear. Fine by me, Kojima. Shoot me up with those nanomachines when you're ready.

Based off of a trailer and two walkthrough videos you have decided all of this?

My biggest concern right now is them selling me on GZ being worth 30 bucks. Right now it appears to be a demo that has been shoehorned into "missions" in order to get 30 bucks because MGSV is likely 2 years away and they want revenue now.

They're really ruining this franchise for me with all this separate game nonsense. MGS is not that good to stand alone with MP stuff.

I'm okay with most of the decisions they've made so far EXCEPT for the absurd amount they're charging for Ground Zeroes. Either that or they need to tell us exactly how much content it has, because right now it looks like it's worth $10-15 to me at the most. It's not like GT Prologue that had high replayability.

The fact that they've shown literally the same walkthrough of one level like 4 times now for GZ makes me wonder how big it actually is. It looks to me like, you are right, they are shoehorning it into a mission side-game to get it out quickly.

And I've not really decided anything, it's just observations I'm making about the game as a whole. I started super hyped, and now I'm slowly falling, as are others. I'm beginning to worry about the future of the game(s).

Only thing i don't like is charging near full price for Ground Zeroes. Everything else is a okay in my book. I'm pretty excited about a Metal Gear game with a more open approach to levels and how you tackle things.

Right now it seems to me it should be free. They are going to need to tell me that this game has at least 4-5 hours of content for 30 bucks.

From what I have seen we are getting a 15 minute demo. Maybe there is more to it than that, but they certainly haven't shown it.

The amount of MGS V knee jerk has been astronomical, most of the things people are freaking out about were apparent in the E3 trailer, which some of those same people were incredibly hyped about. From what has been shown MGS V looks like what Peace Walker could've been, and that's a great thing. Peace Walker's story is a legendary turd, MGS V seems to be a lot more grounded, but still really odd.

The most worrying thing for MGS V is the writing and the English performances.

Ground Zeroes looks like a blatant cash grab and I have zero expectations after seeing the base infiltration mission ten times. Until shown otherwise I have no hype for MGS V.

Still a little hope for the Phantom Pain but that probably wont even make 2014

Yeah, I'm a little worried too. MGS3 is my favourite game of all time, but MGS4 was ok at best. Peace Walker HD on the other hand, was great, so I was actually kind of excited that MGS5 would be a sequel of some sort. MGS5 E3 (?) trailer is literally the best thing ever. However, I'm not too confident anymore. Has Kojima lost his touch (MGS4)? Is he just trying to cater 'dudebros'? And the game shouldn't be cross-gen, imo.

This is like releasing Kill Bill in two movies. Fuck that shit, I'll wait for the inevitable "all in one" bundle a year later or something.

I agree I'm a bit confused as to where they want to take this game (games?) and what they want to accomplish with it. The gameplay seems horrendous too, full of modern stealth ripped from action games like Dishonored, Far Cry 3 and the last gen Splinter Cells. Then of course you have to add in the fact that it's yet another prequel that no one asked for. Why are they making this again?

Open-world has me concerned. I don't understand the fascination in extending the space in between two points of interest.

I don't want to jump the gun, but the ultra photo realistic visuals and automatic health regeneration system have me thinking of something. Just saying. Might be the end of the franchise for me.

It's everything!

Kojima knows what he's making

The only problem is it's going to take a long ass time, and Kojima Productions needs to make some money to continue development.

Seriously, MGS 4 was the last game the company as a whole developed. You can count ZOE HD or Revengeance if you think limited collaborations count, but KojiPro needs some money coming in if it's gonna take them Last Guardian FF15 years to produce another game.

Please the fans while giving them something between the 6-8 year wait, but at the same time make some money in-between to keep the business going.

He's the president and the developer so he has to do this to make us happy while allowing his workers to be able to put food on the table

EDIT: They didn't fast forward because it was boring. When I saw the open landscape I wanted to explore. When Snake used the horse to hide himself part of me wanted to see what was in that checkpoint station the guards were at.

There were so many possibilities and actual soldiers sprinkled throughout the landscape that just trying to explore would be a stealth mission of it's own

I don't even understand which game is which any more. Which game has the horse? Which game has the hospital sequence?

The marketing and information on the game is probably more eclectic than the games themselves. I think it's probably best to wait for more information before drawing conclusions.

You're not a big MGS fan if I recall correctly, so I'm sorta confused on why you're gauging if fans want this type of game or not.

You know to me the open world format sounds like a welcome change to me, having an open space really opens up the possibilities for infiltration and adds another layer to the gameplay.

It's going to be a departure from the norm, but sometimes change is good.

Is the just a slut, or into far out fashion trends, or an assassin, or a poster child for the future of female sexuality, or the product of an abusive father, or Kojima's wet dream?... who knows.

Do people take the storyline in these games seriously? Now I have only played MGS4, so pardon me if I am just plain ignorant, but the story itself was just over the top nonsense to me. It was the gameplay which hooked me.

Yeah, open world has me really concerned as well. MGS has always been a cool franchise because of it's pacing, for me. I quite like the cinematics, and there always was a great stealth gameplay segment followed by exciting story exposition. Open world just seems to me it's going to kill any form of pacing the game has and make the story exposition a segmented mess.

That, and I'm not too fan of the "modern" third person shooter mechanics, either.

I'm an MGS fan, that's my job. :P

Yes, guys. I realize this is a lot of conclusions to jump to, and I'm sorry. But I just wanted to make my concerns known, and see if anyone else is concerned. I'm still holding out on this being a great game. As a fan, I'm just really confused as to where it's going at this point. That came to a head when the two separate games were announced and has continued since.

I was excited by the idea of an open world MGS game, and i thought the Phantom Pain E3 trailer was damn good.
However every playthrough of Ground Zeroes was so bland and uninspired, especially for a MGS game, that i wonder if they'll even do anything genuinely creative and interesting with the open world approach, beside "Look, now we have less tight level design!".

Im sure kojima is fucking with us like he always does....remember mgs2 we all thought we were going to play as snake and then well we all know the rest. He is fucking trolling us lol.

Oh, God, I can only imagine how confusing that must have been.

Wish it was just one gem instead of two. GZ could be the opening section. I could have waited. Open world to me is a bad word from past experience.

please share with us her character bio?

nvm I'll just wait for the game to come out

It isn't looking good.

Ground Zeroes is just a byproduct of The Phantom Pain, though.

And The Phantom Pain sounds good, but we'll see. I'm hoping they go all out. Two acts. Afghanistan and Africa. And I want to see Big Boss build Outer Heaven. I want to build Outer Heaven. And I want to recruit the bosses of Metal Gear 1. And meet
Sniper Wolf and a young Solid Snake
. I want FOXHOUND to get involved. I want Campbell.

And we need interiors. Heck, Ground Zeroes would be redeemed in my eyes if we get to infiltrate the inside of a building at some point.

GZ seems to pretty much be like a GT:Prologue sort of thing. People will enjoy it and realize it's short comings. I doubt many people will be too critical on it because they will walk into it understanding it's an interim title. I doubt it will even do much story wise.

Aka we'd like to make a quick buck while we develop this real game

when the last game the company put out as a whole was MGS4

and that they've been spending all their money trying to play catch up with graphics and trying to finish an almost cancelled game by sharing the profits to an outside developer

I think a quick buck is needed.
