Character select screen/roster prediction time!

iOigzcO.png

The empty boxes will fill in as more characters are revealed. I'm mainly posting this because most of the rosters I see follow the series placement of Brawl's select screen, which is unlikely since each of the three Smash Bros. games to date have had completely different layouts. I really like the idea of Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu forming the "core" of the select screen with the guest characters scattered to the corners.

My prediction!

I really like your layout since your idea is pretty solid with four core characters in the middle of selection screen. I will make the prediction list based on your layout.

Character select screen/roster prediction time!

From top, left to right, and adding an extra box to the start and end of the bottom row:

Row #1: ROB - Wario - Yoshi - Dixie Kong - Diddy Kong - Donkey Kong - Fox - Falco - Wolf - Ice Climbers - Wii Fit Trainer - Mr. Game & Watch

Row #2: Solid Snake - Rosalina & Luma - Peach - Bowser - Luigi - Mario - Kirby - Meta Knight - King Dedede - Pikmin & Olimar - Villager - Pac-Man

Row #3: Sonic - Mewtwo - Lucario - Pokemon Trainer - Jigglypuff - Pikachu - Link - Zelda/Sheik - Ganondorf - Toon Link - Toon Zelda/Tetra - Mega Man

Row #4: Little Mac - Captain Falcon - Roy - Ike - Chrom & Lucina - Marth - Samus - Pit - Palutena - Lucas - Ness - Mii

Could someone fill it in as described? Wish there was a way to squeeze in Takamaru on that template, since I can totally see him making the cut.

Could probably add another character and a "random" box in the bottom row.

Okay, so here’s how my roster prediction currently looks:

T4BJciP.png

The usual OCD stuff:

Wario’s next to Pac-Man (they both like to eat)
Falcon is above Olimar (“Captains”)
Falcon is next to the Star Fox characters (shared universe)
Olimar is next to the Kirby characters (tiny characters)
Olimar is next to Villager (2001 Nintendo EAD creations)
R.O.B. is next to Mega Man (robots)
Snake is above Sheriff (weaponry!)
All the RPG characters are together
All the Disk System characters are together
The new guests are diagonal from each other and so are Brawl’s guests

Some comments…

Dixie Kong
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dixie in the game, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to see her excluded. I really think her inclusion depends on whether or not Sakurai knew she’d be in Tropical Freeze when he was putting the roster together. Otherwise, it’s tough to justify including her without that push.

Sheriff
Really, this could be any bizarre historical character, but I went with Sheriff for the time being so I could attach a name to the box. I definitely don’t think he’s set in stone.

Zoroark
I’m still one of the crazy few who believe Zoroark has a good shot at being included. The arrival of X/Y doesn’t mean Black/White/Black 2/White 2 don’t exist, and the roster needs more post-Brawl characters. The Dark type is unrepresented within the roster of playable Pokémon characters, so there’s a lot of room for a unique play style. I’m sure Sakurai could do something with the Illusion ability as well. I’m not behind Zoroark 100%, but I do think it’s more likely than most people want to believe.

Characters I could see being included but didn’t put on my roster:

Toon Zelda
Zelda is big enough to deserve another character, and I’m absolutely convinced Toon Zelda would be next on deck. Given that Sakurai has repeatedly stated how important it is that newcomers offer something unique, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Zelda clone excluded. I also don’t know if Sakurai would want to include a third “magical princess”-type newcomer after Rosalina and Palutena. That might be overkill.

Chrom
Chrom’s popular, but he’s also really boring. Between Marth and Ike, Chrom just doesn’t seem necessary. A Chrom & Lucina pair character would remedy that, but I’m not sure how technically feasible a character like that would be since Sakurai couldn’t get Diddy & Dixie to work together in Brawl.

I'd be pretty shocked to see more than 50 characters, honestly.

Working under the assumption that all 39 Brawl vets return then we're already at 43. Assuming some of the newcomers are hidden, then we aren't looking at many more reveals which doesn't seem like the case considering Sakurai just blew a character trailer on a December Direct which didn't really pertain to Smash.

Toon Zelda, meh. We already have two Links. I really don't think we need two Zeldas. I agree the Zelda series could use another rep, but I'd much rather have an original Zelda character.

Brawl had what, 39 unique characters? I think we're lowballing the number of characters here.

Well, they have to work on all of veterans so that would take some times to do. Technically if we are going to see all 39 characters to coming back so it will take most of their times to work on those 39 characters.

For all we know, Rosalina's reveal could be to tide us over until E3 where Sakurai plans on making major announcements at a quicker pace. We could get a newcomer at E3, a newcomer in July, a newcomer in August, and then the game's release in September. That leaves room for three hidden newcomers.

The Brawl -> Smash 4 changes don't seem as drastic as Melee -> Brawl at first glance. Also Sakurai has a strong dev team to work with this time, Tekken games for instance always have a crazy cast size.

I've been away from the thread for a few days, so can anyone tell me if that great Smash 4 wallpaper that was being updated by a user here has gotten a new update with Rosalina/Luma? I'd love to get the updated version if so!

They're very clearly using Brawl as a base for the returning characters. They're touching them up and tweaking them of course, but most of the work is already done for returning characters.

There's a chance, but it's still a bit of a stretch to assume that the majority of the Smash fanbase is eager to make the jump to a small screen version. It seems more likely to me that both versions would flounder rather than the 3DS just absorbing that audience.

highly, highly unlikely
well actually that would just screw Nintendo over so much, so rofl if that were to happen because of a huge delay in release dates

this is not likely
anyway they'll probably be around 50 counting transformations, but not 50 characters on the selection screen

I also doubt everyone from Brawl will return. It just isn't feasible.

I can see Ike, Lucas, Diddy Kong, and Lucario getting cut. My guess is that Chrom will replace Ike, Mother will go back to being repped by just Ness, Diddy may get changed into a combination Diddy/Dixie "character" like Ice Climbers/Rosalina & Luma/Pikmin & Olimar, and Mewtwo will replace Lucario.

I would also guess that R.O.B. is on the chopping block, but he brings some real uniqueness and weird repping to the roster, so maybe not.

Just my speculation...

I don't see why not, cuts happened in Brawl due to time constraints and (Mewtwo aside) most of those cut were clones. Assuming that the Melee characters that made it to Brawl are safe, who would be first on the chopping block? This becomes even more nebulous given the announcement of a character like Toon Link.

Two underrated potential newcomers:

Tactician ("My Unit" from FE Awakening): Would be a much more unique choice than Chrom, who I can only imagine either being a Marth/Ike hybrid or an Ike replacement. He would also represent the magic and strategy elements of the series.

Dr. Lobe (Big Brain Academy): While not as big of a series as Brain Age, Dr. Lobe seems like he could easier be given a moveset since he has a body. He could spawn math equations, puzzle pieces, use his teaching stick etc. It would be a nice symmetry with Wii Fit Trainer to represent both pillars of the Blue Ocean strategy.

Okay GAF, you are now Sakurai. You just realized that due to systemwide virus
or whatever
you must recreate the entire Smash Bros. game. You can only fit five stages and ten characters (Transformations like Shiek only count as one, and you're only allowed a max of three transformations per character) into the game before you must release it.

Create!

that's what they all say
if they weren't in the final game, the developers didn't want them, there is no "well we might add them next time"

Poor Ridley. He wants to be with his pal Samus, but she just keeps giving him the cold shoulder and sitting between Marth and Pit.

Also, I still can't believe Yoshi hasn't been announced.

Sakurai's statements saying roster cuts weigh deeply on him suggests otherwise. Mewtwo, Roy, and Dr. Mario all had data on the disc as far as I know. Toon Link effectively replaced Young Link, and there were many other characters left off like Dixie, Toon Zelda, and Plusle + Minun. The only planned "cut" seemed to be Pichu.

The only Brawl character that is at risk is Snake and that has everything to do with being 3rd party.

$10 on any characters cut from Brawl having data on SSB4's discs, provided there's more than one non-Snake cut

This is the only correct answer.

Any data left on the discs could mean some dlc characters.
