We found a cat.

Oh look, it's another "we found a cat" thread.

Last night, the husband and I were about to leave a restaurant after dinner and before we get to the door I hear a kid say "Look, there's a cat!" There was, in fact, a cat: this poor thing had followed someone into the entry vestibule, and was trying to get into the restaurant itself.

I tried to help the staff shoo her out, and she meowed at me. When we got her outside, I'm already crying because I'm a huge emotional baby and it's a hungry stray and we don't have a carrier and she just wants some food and it's winter etc etc etc. Also we just had one of our cats die 2 months ago and I'm still very sad about it because she was my best buddy in the world so it brought all those feelings up too. Husband tells me to calm down, we'll go home, get a cat carrier and go look for her. I said OK, but I knew we'd never find her again because some asshole would shoo her away and she'd go slinking off into the night.

We got back about 10 mins later and another couple had stopped and was feeding her pieces of their leftovers. I think if not for them we wouldn't have found her, she must have been begging from everyone going in or out but they kept her occupied for enough time for us to get over there with the carrier. They didn't really have plans to take her though, and said they were glad we would because she was "crying like a little baby" at them.

The cat did not fight me at all about picking her up and getting her in the carrier beyond a "hey wats going on" moment.

We took her to an e-vet for a microchip scan, and she's chipped, but it leads back to a local animal adoption agency and not an owner. We have the chip number and we're going to follow up with them to see if they have a record of who they adopted this cat to. The cat's super skinny and bony, and from the way she attacked the food we gave her she may not have eaten much for a while, so I don't know if it's been weeks or days.

So, kitty is now in our spare bathroom being quarantined from our other cat. She's going to our normal vet later today, just for a checkup.

We may find her owners soon, but for now I'm glad this cat is inside and safe. She's totally friendly and just acts so happy when you go in there and sit with her. If we can't find her owners, or if they turn out to not want her, then hey I guess we got a new cat! (or rather, a cat got us.)

I am not naming her yet though, as a precaution.

How is that third picture NOT an "I'm going to kill you in your sleep" stare?

Throw that cat out OP while you still can.

Man, black cats are pretty great. Hopefully your other cat gets along if you can't find the owner.

Yeah, honestly we had talked about someday getting another cat, and my plan was to adopt a black cat specifically because they tend to wait longer in shelters to get adopted.

Our cat knows there's An Other in there. The "other cat" meows pretty loudly when you go in (she's all black, but her facial shape is kinda Siamese, so.. a talker, probably) and there was a split second they saw each other while the door was open last night. She acts kinda nervous about it but so far no growling or hissing at the door.

Those pics have that "Soon" caption written all over them.

Congrats on the good deed and hope you get to keep it. Makes a great Christmas story too.

Our neighbor down the street recently moved out and left the cat, one morning we found her sleeping by our door, which is odd because our cat would always fight her and so she would avoid our garden. We gave her some food and never saw her again.
Either owner picked her up or she froze to death.
It was also a black cat, our's is also black

Having read all that, and then seeing those photos afterwards... I get the feeling that she is gonna stay.

Depends on whether or not the shelter has records connecting the microchip code to the owners, unfortunately they don't open for another hour and we have no idea how long it will take them to dig around and find out (they're a non-profit, no-kill shelter and when we called last night to drop her off, they simply had no room for her).

If it was our cat that had gone missing, both of us would be devastated if we never found her again. This poor cat was probably some little kid's pet and they should get her back.

That said, if we can't track down the owners she'll definitely have a home with us.

Black cats are simply the best, it's sad that statistically they are the least adopted because of that dumb superstition.

I'll never forget my black cat Sylvester, he's been gone now for 4 years. Acted so much like a Guard Dog around the house, but never scratched or bit anyone or anything.

I hope everything works out well for the cat and yourself.

Call her Luna and get her one of those things to wear around her neck with a litte crescent moon pendant on it OP. Think of how cute that woud be. Think of it.

Our existing cat is kinda already named Luna. :( I didn't pick it, the shelter I adopted her from named her that and I never bothered to think of a new one.

Put it on craigslist, and title is something along the lines of "friendly lap cat, needs good home. No adoption fee"

Cute cat.

As mentioned by my wife, we already have a cat named Luna. However, I will provide photos, as that's the real reason people check out cat threads.

That sounds like a good way to ensure she ends up in a quart-sized paperboard container and served over rice.

that cat is SOOOOOO cute <3 you're a good person for rescuing her hythloday, thanks for that :) Black cats get so much hate flung their way, the shelters in my city won't even adopt black cats out to people around halloween time because there exists trash that will actually get them just to torture them for fun (was told this by one of the adoption girls when I went looking at cats). I personally would be so tempted to keep that cat, is that what you'll do if you can't find it's owner (assuming the cat even has one?)

SOOOOOOO cute :)

I'm pretty sure it's a girl, but I guess we'll find out later today. She saw a vet tech last night who felt her up a bit and she didn't feel any dangly parts.

Also knowing the animal shelter that gave her the microchip, she's probably already spayed (or neutered). I've adopted cats from them before, and the adoption fee includes the cost of the spay/neuter which gets done before they let you take the cat home. (Edit: probably even before they actually put the cat up for adoption in the first place)

If she isn't, I'll definitely get it done, because holy god female cats are a pain in the ass when they go into heat. I've never lived with an un-neutered male before, but I'd still get it done.

If a cat was so friendly and coming up to people not afraid, it likely wasn't a stray originally at least. Course it could have always had people being nice to it so it's used to humans.

Use the quotation system, it helps during a conversation. As for cats themselves, I would gate a male neutered purely for population control. The last thing I would want is several kittens to look after. Although, one would be a welcome addition.

Cats are sweet. Thank you for doing the right thing! Most people probably wouldn't have even feed it let alone check to see if it has a chip.

If no previous owners pop up I'd say he/she found a good home

Aw, hopefully they get along well if you get to keep her.

Yeah, I know, I forgot. I had thought I'd snag the next post after yours but someone snuck in there.

There are way too many "oops" kittens in shelters for me to not spay/neuter.

Update:
Just got off the phone with the shelter her chip was registered to. They said it could either be one of their cats OR the chip was inserted at one of their "Healthy Pet" events that they run, where people can bring their pets and (amongst other things) get their pets chipped. If it's the former, they would probably have a record of her but if it's the latter there's not going to be any record (and the chip just leads back to the shelter since they were he ones who purchased them). The problem with micro-chipping is that people either forget to register their pets or they forget to pay the yearly fee (or just let it slide because they don't think their pet will get loose).

Vet appointment in a few hours to see if she's healthy. My wife has been checking craigslist and various websites for missing cats, but so far none match her description.
