Ken Levine's Top 10 Games of 2013

I'm pretty upset that his opinion of the Top games does not match my own. Burn the Heretic.

Looks like I'm getting fallen enchantress on Steam now.

Don't. Fallen enchantress is still a deeply flawed game and has already been replaced by Legendary Heroes (the next standalone expac). That one finally fixes most of the egregious economy exploits and smooths out the hero gameplay signiciantly.

Glad to see AC 4 getting some more love. Despite some niggling issues its definitely a return to form for the series.

yeah really.

Granted, it might not a top 3 choice for many but to me those who dismiss it from a top 10 list are basically clowns who just like to be different from others.

But opinions.

It's in my top 10, but I can completely see how some people might not like it. So yeah, opinions.

Umm, no, it's quite possible to not like something you loved.

While I really enjoyed TLoU it won't be in my top 10 of the year, either. And nah, we're not clowns. Just people with different tastes.

Do you hold that against him? I don't understand this comment.

I can't dictate other people's decisions but its my belief that every gamer should own a 3DS.

Great list. Fallen Enchantress and Unity of Command are fucking great and I am glad to see Ken considers Infinite unworthy of such company.

seems like an absurd omition from a top 10 list.

A ridiculously huge one at that.

EU4, BNW, Starbound, Papers Please, nba2k14, Monaco, Spelunky, GTAV, dragon commander, smtIV.

Easily done to create a list of arguably superior gamed to TLOU. Its a good game ...but not ss2/deus ex/x-com groundbreaking. It was a polished entry conforming heavily to a well travelled genre.

Yikes.

It's hard not to sour on The Last of Us when shit like this appears in every Game of the Year thread.

Do people not grasp that perhaps a guy who has a rigorous full time job that isn't a video game reviewer didn't get a chance to play your particular favorite game yet? I mean 3 of his 10 games were from last year.

Or shock, he just didn't like it as much compared to those other ten games? Sorry, it can happen.

I believe he was on an episode of Three Moves Ahead a couple years ago and said he just couldn't get into the Paradox games.

Fallen Enchantress is a better game anyway!

Fallen Enchantress is way to easy to exploit economically to be considered in the same breath as EU4. Are you sure you aren't referring to Legendary Heroes?

Can you even play Fallen Enchantress without the Legendary Heroes expansion? I'm confused as to how that all rolled out because I was one of the assholes who bought into the Elemental beta and have gotten everything since for free!

But yes, I am referring to the game as it currently exists.

Have You even played half of the stuff from that list?

People who make those types of posts should be forced to supply account information and show proof of play when calling out these games that they clearly have so much experience with! It'd be nice to have one non-standard GOTY list that isn't drowned in tears by resident fanthings questioning what the person in mention does or does not own.

Why is Ken Levine snubbing my $100,000,000 cinematic corridor game. Why doesn't Ken Levine like Nintendo. Why doesn't Ken Levine quit his job and play all the latest games. Fuck you Ken Levine, you hipster jerk, playin' games no ones ever heard of.

I especially sympathize with him including older titles. I'm so backlogged on legitimately interesting fare (Steam sales and PS+ do not help...) that I could probably stop purchasing any games for several years and be fine, and this would just be playing the good content that speaks to me, not the silly stuff I've racked up but have no legitimate interest in.

cut it out with that nonsense, please. not everyone has to love it for fuck's sake and they aren't trying to be edgy or different because they didn't happen to think something was a top 10 videogame of the year. who knows, it could have been #11, it could have been #30, maybe he didn't fucking play it.

Someone get this man Europa Universalis IV

I can't abide by that! It takes Irrational long enough to make games as is, I can't imagine how long it will take if you have Ken getting into EU IV. ;-)

Seriously though, I love how into strategy games Ken is. I'm also really happy he played Dishonored. I hope it will inspire him to think back to his Looking Glass roots, and reconsider what it is that made those games good because Bioshock Infinite really dialed back the immersive qualities of those early games. Dishonored meanwhile proved that you can have a great art style and accessible gameplay without sacrificing too much immersion.

Fallen Enchantress is overall a smoother experience without a doubt but EUIV is their best refinement of the formula yet. A few years ago he was probably looking at Hearts of Iron and Vicky 2 and god damn those are some dense ass games.

I didn't think of it that way... but... it's so good!

Man, I played System Shock 2 for the first time this year and that game is incredible; playing the highest difficulty and with a headset in a dark room was a fantastic experience that no other FPS this year replicated for me

Also, how deep that game is.. I like the new BioShock games, but man it's just so weird how much deeper older games are compared to new ones

Not weird at all, that was deliberate:

The spec of BioShock changed so much over the course of development that we spent the majority of the time making the wrong game- an extremely deep game, and at times an interesting one, but it was not a groundbreaking game that would appeal to a wide audience.

Another contributing factor to the late switch was that the game had been more or less proceeding according to plan throughout development, so there didn't seem to be any emergencies that needed intervention from higher levels of management. Milestones were completed, goals were met, development seemed to be proceeding uneventfully. But as the game neared alpha, key people began looked more closely and saw that BioShock wasn't on track to become an accessible and marketable game.

What is it about Naughty Dog games that makes people think that making a post like this is a good idea?

Unity of Command is a great pick! Kudos. I still have to buy the last expansion, Black Turn. I think I'll treat myself with it in this Steam sale.

Are we ready to call him a hipster attention whore like some people did with Rock Paper Shotgun? Or does he has no excuse because he refused to see the greatness of The Last of Us a game so amazing that the creator of Breaking Bad OBVIOUSLY decided to reference that masterpiece in his show?.

Oh god. Naughty Dog broke GAF confirmed.

It's probably worse than the way people compare Dark Souls to fucking everything. RPGs, fighting games, dating sims, whatever.

It was pretty obvious that this is what happened, especially after comparing the finished product to earlier videos and interviews. It's crazy that they were so candid with the confirmation though.

GAF, System Shock 2 and Thief 1 and 2 might be the best games ever made. Let's pool our money and resurrect Looking Glass.

I'd be willing to give an unreasonable amount of money to see that happen.

Man lol

Levine not putting TLoU on his list has put a real mind fuck on some of you. Seek help. The guy either didn't play it or it simply didn't make this list. The need some of you have for everyone to play the same games as yourself or share the same opinions could make anyone want to puke.

The funny thing about System Shock 2 is it had all that stat-heavy RPG elements because it was using the Thief engine (the original System Shock didn't have many RPG mechanics), which was lousy at being a shooter (engine was designed around being able to shoot an arrow from a bow every 10 seconds or so, and populate the world with lots of objects, and so it wasn't optimized for doing something like firing a machine gun). So all that RPG stuff that a lot of people love was kind of an accident born out of necessity and inventiveness.

Maybe there are 10 games that are better than a big budget AAA game that aims to be a lesser version of a movie?

If ken has a gaf account he can pm me and I'll send him a copy of tlou.

lol holy shit.

Were there comments like these for other popular GOTY games?
A very interesting list from KL. And SonyGaf really need to stop derailing the thread.
Stop with this "SonyGAF" bullshit. TLOU is obviously right up there with GTA5 when people talk about GOTY games. If Microsoft released a GOTY worthy game in the last 3 years, then people would act the same way. Would that make the people who loved the game MicrosoftGAF?
