Ken Levine's Top 10 Games of 2013

The way I see it, it's as disingenuous as having a Top 10 NFL QB thread for this season and leaving out Peyton Manning.
Here's the deal with these lists: they're very personal and don't rely on something quantifiable like sports stats.

You clearly haven't seen many military strategy games. UoC is infinitely more approachable than something like Hearts of Iron 3.

You know, I can play Europa, Crusader Kings and Vicky II all day, but Hearts of Iron fucks with my head like no other game.

I should really check out Unity of Command.

I can no longer tell what's real or not in these threads.

Your analogy is moronic. Peyton Manning is objectively one of the best QBs this year. His stats are stellar, that's a fact, and nothing can change that. You could make a (stupid) argument and say that his WRs and Offensive Linemen are the sole reasons for his fantastic year, but from looking at the stats alone you can see that he's objectively one of the top performers of this season.

The Last of Us is subjectively one of the best games of 2013. Many people think it's the best game of the year and that's their opinion. However, Ken Levine obviously didn't feel the same way and decided not to include the title on his list.

If this guy is metatrolling then I should congratulate him for successfully baiting me.

What amuses me the most is that "Naughty Gods" fans aren't even confident in how they feel about The Last of Us; they need its presence on GOTY lists to validate their esteem for the game.

Weird statement incoming, but I wonder if Ken Levine plays any Japanese developed games.

Edit: I should say "many." Wind Waker is his number two, but I can't say I've heard him mentioning many non-Western games on Irrational Behavior or other outlets.

Ridiculous comparison. First, there are only 32 teams in the NFL while there are hundreds of new games being released every year. Second, there are objective measures for rating NFL quarterbacks, whereas games are a little more subjective. Third, who knows if he even played TLOU when he made that list. I don't have an opinion on whether Her is a better Spike Jonez movie than Being John Malkovich or Adaptation because I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Until then, I have no opinion on it. Fourth, going back to the subjective nature of evaluating video games, I would say that Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are incredibly well made games, but they would never be in my top ten lists because for whatever reason, I just don't enjoy playing them. Great games, but not for me.

Same. I took a look at it on Steam and at first glance it looks like a more cartoony version of hearts of iron. To the people who've played Unity, is it like that?
The entire aspect of capturing supply routes and cutting off territory reminded me more of Company of Heroes, to be honest.

First, the game is going to kick your ass and you're going to lose, easily. Then, you realize what you did wrong, adjust your tactics, and after a few tries you will formulate a perfect strategy, execute it and finish your mission with a turn to spare. It's fantastic and immensely rewarding.

The funny thing is, maybe he didn't play it and will include it in a list a year from now if he gets to write one, but by then the cult of TLoU will have died down a bit.

Yeah, Hearts of Iron is brutal. My honest attempts have only gone so far before I get distracted. Right now, something like Wargame: AirLand Battle is more my speed (mainly in multiplayer). It is a pseudo-wargame/RTS hybrid thing with "decks".

guys where can i seek help if im a video game hipster who can't face the facts and put TLOU in my top 10

please i'm tired of being called names

Sorry, did my opinion hurt your feelings?

None of the 2013 lists include the latest Arkham and Gears games. People aren't that easily fooled by an oversized expansion pack.

I own a 3ds and wouldnt put anything from it in my top 10

A clear mark of someone who hasn't played Fire Emblem: Awakening or Link Between Worlds.

Unity of Command is ok. But it's more of a solve the puzzle trial and error type deal.

I felt that Unity of Command highly reactive AI and the supply chain critical importance had me reacting very differently each playthrough. But I also didn't care much for the decisive victory/prestige points achievements.

I only tried for the perfect score each mission and there typically was only 1 way to do it, more or less maybe with slight variations. Didn't manage to finish the whole campaign but I did find it pretty compelling in the beginning. I was impressed at how they managed to convert supply line, attrition and troop management into a very intuitive interface while feeling pretty damn representative of how it worked in real life.

Brilliant victories just seem like a way to ruin your own fun

To a certain degree, yeah. I have this kind of issue with certain games. But still, I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if I just played to squeak by.

They need to take their engine and build a full fledged Civ or EU type game around it.
