Ken Levine's Top 10 Games of 2013

The real stand out absent on that list that shows that Levine is weaksauce is Spelunky. Disgusting. Can't trust him anymore. I won't even bother to offer him a copy through PM in the case he hasn't played it yet. He should have bought it himself and already played it long ago.

he should play the last of us. it does irrational's style of linear combat adventures so much better and there's lots of lessons to be learned from it.

More than half of these are from 2012 so maybe or maybe he just isn't a fan.

You do realize someone can like a game, film, album, whatever without putting it in their top 10 correct? You like TLOU as do most people. That doesn't mean it "deserves" a spot in every top 10 or else the list is invalid.

I bet he played it and learned from it already. I imagine any good game designer as an avid gamer that plays a breadth of games of different genres to educate himself and stay on the top of his skills.

Did he not play The Last of Us?

I'm about 2 hours in (I think). I don't get it. There is NOTHING special about this game to me. It's like Uncharted but you play as some old dude who can't jump up walls like Nathan Drake can.

A complete letdown. Unless it improves significantly, I can't see this being in my top 10 for the year (Bioshock Infinite probably is in the top 10 for me)

Some..."interesting" choices to say the least. Glad to see XCOM and Civ V Brave New World on it though. Great examples of expansions adding into a game.

Only entry that has me scratching my head is Lego Marvel, specially for his reason given. That's weirder than any possible omission.

TLOU starts off toooooooooo slow, awful for replay value. Only gets good when you get to Bill's town. But yeah I understand if people don't have it in their top 10, the fans need to stop getting butthurt over it and let people list the games they enjoy.

I thought the intro was kind of cool when the outbreak initially started, but then when it fast forwards to the current day, it is soooooooo slow. It became a real chore, but granted, I'm not that far into it. I haven't made it to Bill's town yet. I just have to find some motivation to actually play the game. Hoping it gets better because it's pretty mediocre up until this point

It does. A lot of people (including me) felt the first 2 or 3 hours weren't really all that special. But eventually things start to click.

The demo was pretty frustrating. Change to hulk, do something, change back to dude, do something, change back to hulk again, do something, change back etc, etc.

I thought it was a pretty terrible way to try and sell the game to be honest. I hope the actual game is less monotonous.

It's not. Plays exactly like the rest of the LEGO series.

Unity of Command! It's secretly a great game but most people don't know it exists.

I love how it takes a traditionally impenetrable genre and crosses it with the interface simplicity of something like Advance Wars. It's ridiculously playable even if it's a billion times more difficult.

AW? You have convinced me.

lol holy shit.

Were there comments like these for other popular GOTY games?

Stop with this "SonyGAF" bullshit. TLOU is obviously right up there with GTA5 when people talk about GOTY games. If Microsoft released a GOTY worthy game in the last 3 years, then people would act the same way. Would that make the people who loved the game MicrosoftGAF?

Sorry, did my opinion hurt your feelings?

Everyone here just HAS to point to me that TLOU just isn't that good or "nowhere near their top 10 list". But for some reason it's offensive for me to say I find people annoying hipsters when they don't place that game in a 2013 top 10 list just for the sake of being different from others.

I simply refuse to acknowledge that there are people who actually can name 10 games that were better than the Last of Us in 2013, a pretty weak year.

I know tastes matter, when picking games people liked better, but when picking a top 10 games of any year I actually look at them subjectively (or objectively. Always mix them both. The one where your taste or opinion doesn't matter). I pick the games that either excelled at doing something that made a lasting impression on the people who played them, were just so fun that pratically everyone asks for other games to emulate their formulas, or simply achieved something that few other games did.

I had more fun with dynasty warriors 8 than I did with Super Mario 3D world, yet I consider Super Mario one of the top 10 games of 2013 and dynasty warriors 8 not even near the top 30.

But like others do like to point to me (despite the fact that I actually acknowledged that on the very first... maybe second post I made in this thread), opinions.

Apparently mine does ruffle some feathers and I have "to acknowledge" that TLOU wasn't "anything special".

No, I highlighted your post because individual GOTY lists refer to just 1 person and what they enjoyed the most. It typically doesn't acknowledge the universal opinions of the best games of the year. I'm sure there's games that you dislike but other people love and wouldn't put it in your top 10 games of the year. Let's not forget that not every person played every game this year. This includes all of the highest rated games as well.

I do agree that the people who bash GTA5 and TLOU or downplay all the praise those games got because they're tired of the fans thinking those games should be on every list are becoming more annoying. A lot of those kind of comments are weak arguments (or they clearly didn't play the game) and are made to look for attention.

I thought The Last of Us was wonderful, yet unlike you I also thought 2013 was a great year, and thus The Last of Us is probably going to find itself in my honorable mentions pile. The medium is incredibly diverse for as young as it is, and this is something that should be celebrated. The fact that every single person's "best of" list isn't comprised of The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto V, Super Mario 3D World, BioShock Infinite and so on and so forth is a sign of gaming's maturation. Look at Sight & Sound's 2013 year end poll -- you'll see some of the usual suspects on the list (Gravity, Blue Is the Warmest Color), but that is a result of consensus and visibility, and if you take the time to dig through each contributor's list you'll find plenty of variety, and many a list lacking those tent pole films.

Who the fuck wants a Ken Levine's objective top 10 games of 2013?

You think expressing the opinion that anyone willing to not place TLOU in their top 10 is a clown hipster just looking to be different should be treated no different than the opinion that the game just might not be in someone's top ten? You can't see how your shitty opinion may just inspire a different reaction?

System Shock 2 and Thief.
Ok but his latest outings just smeared his previous gems. I mean, seriously. Even moreso when you quote an interview saying he meaningfully made a worse game with Bioshock than what was originally planned.

Not gonna lie I was surprised not to see tlou or yta v in there, but then I noticed some of the games he listed isn't even from 2013. Maybe he hasn't played it yet, and will put tlou in Top 10 by 2014-15.

Or the game is just not good enough for him. But whatever different strokes for different folks.

Relax man, no one is entitled to take away the way you like to make top 10, but you have to understand that not everyone is like you. Ken has put in his list a lot of 2012 games and a HD remaster of a 2003 game, he is a very busy dude too, maybe next year he will put tlou in the list.

It also doesn't help seeing some people say that your game is lesser than Tlou because that game executes X and Y better than your game. which is not true.

Get the fuck over it. Nobody cares how you feel about TLOU. it's your absurd opinion that everyone has to put this 1 game, that you're clearly finding so important., even if they don't feel the same or haven't even played it that's entirely misguided. It's a personl top 10, not top 10 I think the consensus will agree with.

I love your logic. I haven't played a second of DOTA2, but that is CLEARLY in my top 10 of the year. Man, this is easy! Why can't all lists be made like this?

Keep on fighting the good fight against those damn gaming hipsters, Zephyrus.

It's considered pretty tasteless to put yourself or something you made at the top of a personal list. Most people won't do it.
The only man who can get away with that is Dave Lang. And he did, props.

This is so incredibly obvious that I can't believe it hasn't been pointed out before, no matter how you feel about TLoU or Infinite.

If you enjoy Dynasty Warriors 8 more than 3D World, then it should be in your top 10

Personal GOTY lists are not about what should be in the top 10 but what you enjoyed in the year - and Levine does exactly that

Your whole logic is flawed like The Last Of Us :lol

This entire post is a collection of bizarre paragraphs that have little to no place in a thread about Ken Levine's top 10 list.

AW? You have convinced me.

I mentioned it in that post but I'll say it again: Unity of Command is NOT an easy game. I'm only saying that it's very easy to pick up and understand. Any time you're curious about an unfamiliar icon or button, there's going to be a tooltip that will explain everything. It's very similar to Advance Wars in that respect.

The Last of Us is the letdown of the gen for me.
What a boring cinematic pile.
Ken Levine not even mentioning it in his list just confirms how little importance such a game has.

I doubt in 5 years anyone will even remember it.
