I'm fine with R&S going, but I'm not fine with HA going. I'd sooner see Talespin and Pinky & the Brain go, of course, but if people want Stimpy gone, they want him gone.

I've just accepted that this thread is chaos and Johnny Bravo is somehow going to win the whole thing.

I like Ren & Stimpy, but I don't think I cared about it enough to keep it from getting eliminated this far in. I guess I'll use my save on more Warner Brothers unless something crazy happens.

Kill:TaleSpin
Kill:TaleSpin
Save:Pinky & The Brain

It seems to me that every round there are two or three shows that everyone latches onto And the other shows are ignored. It's what makes this thread so interesting.

People don't want to split the vote. Just like an American election haha. (complete with hidden agendas and back room deals hahaha)

we really gotta work on getting rid of 90s turtles. 90s turtles had nunchuckless mikey, some doof other than shredder/krang as the bad guys, and second mutations (because of power rangers most likely).

we can do better.

Turtles has aged terribly and needs to go asap.

Kill: Pinky and the Brain
Kill: Beavis and Butthead

Save: Ren & Stimpy

Pinky and the Brain was better as a short.
I'm not sure how Beavis and Butthead even made it this far. Should have been gone a few rounds ago.

Ren & Stimpy was simply more memorable and entertaining than a few of the shows still left on the list.

But it's getting a little harder to cull the list of shows I didn't like or didn't particularly care for.

Why are you guys trying to Kill the greatest cartoon ever made?

Kill: Tailspin
Kill: Tailspin

Save: Ren and Stimpy

The show has great animation and the grotesque and insane humor makes it special.

Seriously guys, time to kill South Park

As amazing as the show is now and in the 00s, it was trash in the 90s
I couldn't disagree more. The show was actually imaginative and fresh in the 90s, but the 00's was a long downward spiral into forgettable "topical" writing and increasingly graphic shock humor.

Nah, it's going to be some superhero cartoon. Probably Batman.
Yeah, the superheroes have gone far too untouched.
I'd be up for cutting Batman Beyond and Superman at this point. Good shows, but they don't match Batman TAS for quality, or The Tick for humour.

Looks like Tale Spin is going down. Gotta kill second place now.

"You know what I'm thinking, Pinky? It's time for us to go."

Kill: Pinky and the Brain
Kill: Pinky and the Brain

Please don't get me wrong. Pinky and the Brian is comedic genius...on Animaniacs. What made Animaniacs great was it's short bursts of variety. Dedicating a whole show to these characters thinned them out a bit.

Save: Ren & Stimpy

When I think 90's these guys always pop into my head.

I forgot about Freakazoid. It's like everyone moved on from it because it was getting a lot of saves.

I don't really care about killing Freakazoid and Pinky & the Brain right now because those two ain't gonna beat down Animaniace later on. I'd be more scared if someone target Animaniac for early elimination.

I haven't voted for things like Johnny Bravo and Tail Spin because they were pretty damn forgettable to me. I think we're getting to the point where shows that people have forgotten about/haven't watched will start getting voted off.

Darkwing Duck is another one that I have very few memories of.

Should I quote myself from the other 3 times I voted for the exact same thing?

It's simple. I vote for the shows I like, I negative vote for the ones I don't.
Ooh I didn't know you had voted for the same thing

The John K's R&S episodes were amazing and game-changing enough for me to vote to save the show for as long as possible, even if the rest sucked.

That said, I'm OK with the show leaving after the list is down to 10 or even 15 shows, but I can't in good conscience vote against it when there's still quite a few mediocre shows on the list.

I mean, how can you vote against THIS!??!?!?!

Kill: Ren and Stimpy
Kill: Hey Arnold

Save: Tailspin.

I never liked the gross out style of R&S, Hey Arnold was okay, it explored some interesting themes but it was also a bit on the dull side. I enjoyed Tailspin. The only cartoon on the Disney block (before it really went downhill) that I couldn't get into was Darkwing Duck.

Holy fuck. This show is disgusting lmao. Even the sound effects are creepy and gross.

Kill: Talespin
Kill: Pinky and the Brain
Save: Hey Arnold

I thought Home Movies would be a more contentious fight, so I was okay with it going last round. It's time for Talespin to go though.

Ren and Stimpy is going to get saves for days and I think a kill would be wasted on it. Let's hope there isn't anyone that will save Pinky even though he's also represented by The Animaniacs.

Pigeon Man, Stoop Kid, her chewing gum shrine of shame, etc.

And I watched so little of Hey Arnold that I have no idea about any og the things you mention here. He is known as football head. That's about the extent I know of Hey Arnold. I do think its a decent show. I do remember watching it sometimes, but not enough for me to remember anything specific that happened.

Tailspin just isn't that iconic or revered as a 90s cartoon, when you get down to it.

Pinky and the Brain shouldn't last much longer, unless there are some fans who think it's top quality.

I liked the standalone Pinky and the Brain a lot, but I'm willing to lose it with Anamaniacs still being on the list as kind of a compromise. I'm definitely ok with losing it if it means Ren and Stimpy sticks around.

The thing is can anyone in WB block really beat Animaniac or Batman TAS in the end?
Same thing with Disney block and Ducktales.

For me, my I nostalgia hardest for Nicktoons, followed by WB. Disney TV never appealed to me whatsoever. Their movies during that time were god tier though.

I'm not a big fan, but it is pretty top quality as far as cartoons go.

I agree with both of you guys- it's a keeper, but I think Animaniacs should take priority. I swear, I'm not trying to stealth kill both shows!

As far as strong WB shows, I think a few could make top ten.

i think it holds up remarkably well. it's one of the only shows on the list that does.

the music by jim lang is amazing, and complements the watercolor backgrounds and colorfully dirty city as a sort of a rose-colored view of childhood. arnold himself is an idealist, but not perfect. he has fits of anger, can be selfish, and his idealism is shown to be a problem at some points. the surrounding cast of characters gets at least one episode to themselves throughout the series, but no more than helga. helga's problems are rooted back to the neglect from her family, and she takes it out on the kids around her (as an outlet and also a way to be noticed).

family types are different, and they're rarely addressed as being different (there's never a 'my parents are interracial and that's okay' episode). it just presents things as they are.

there's a real emotional core to this show, and i can't think of too many better that focused on everyday adventures kids might have as well as the normal stuff they would have to deal with most of the time. the writing unfortunately worsened throughout the series, but the first two seasons are very strong and i'd recommend watching what you can.

if any of this sounds interesting to you, pigeon man, stoop kid, heat/snow, arnold's christmas, arnold's valentine (my personal favorite), and helga on the couch are all worth catching.

nice breakdown. doug is pretty not great. people should direct their hey arnold dislike to that. early 90s rugrats wasn't bad, but there's also late 90s rugrats and that muddies the water a bit.

of the fucked up cartoons, i think rocko should stay. spongebob is good too though.

Honestly, I think there's been so much decimation in the "Kids doing stuff" and "Disney" categories that there needs to be a bit of a truce on those shows for now.

the keen eye would notice that I've sorted the categories by:
1) # shows lost since page 11
2) # shows remaining in the category

In my ideal world, at least one show from each category would make it to the top 10, since comparing between them is often apples/oranges.

A long long time ago....
I can still remember....
how cartoons used to make me smile....

Whenever SWAT Kats got their chance....
They'd always stop evil's advance....
Some favorite memories.. I had... as a child.

But NEOGAF made me shiver,
With every kill vote they delivered...
The kills when on as I slept....
By morning it had been swept...

I can't remember if I cried.... when I..
Read the save votes from those who tried....

But something touched me deeeeeeeep inside.....
the day...
that SWAT Kats.......
Died........

*Raises glass to this*

You guys have no idea what an achievement it was for the folks at Hannah Barbara to pull off a show as great as Swat Kats with how that studio machined out things on low budgets and deadlines. Hannah Barbara is accredited for saving the animation industry in the west by using the cheapest tactics ever...then someone figured out within the confines of that structure how to put together something this good. It was a testament to an animation team designing from the ground up an action show that was able to be high quality with a company that minimized all production assets for the teams struggling to show how good they be.

Using planes, anthropomorphic characters, the whited out eyes, all the chase scenes. We all thought it was just kick ass action, but it was all carefully chosen so that they could do the kind of stories they wanted from within a company that just wouldn't relinquish budget or stretch deadlines. The amount of action and cinematography crammed in was wonderful.

The color palettes emulating the strong tenebrism of comics was not only a stroke of brilliance for atmosphere, but for speed of animation. Planes meant lots of sitting scenes and easy to animate aerial combat and explosions are about 2-3 frames minimum and many can be reused undetected. Plus chase scenes mean reusable backgrounds and cities in ruin means no need for detail shots just use lots of loud explosions and colors to cover things. Plus having characters in the sky all the time meant tons of canted shots and dramatic angles to excite audiences...and to make it easier on teams to produce since the sky is one big color swatch and easy to animate. And a city can be tiled and reused easily with cel shenanigans once a few angles are done. Why cat people? Because with those kinds of mouths lip flap matching is NOT a concern and is easier to animate and faster all around.

The show was awesome and action packed and badass and I loved it growing up. Now that I'm an adult and an Animator myself its a bit of a legend amongst academics for what it achieved with its careful design, great boarding, and attention to color palettes.

You monsters who voted it dead...I will see your world burn for this.

Everything before the first movie is good stuff; I think that came out in '97. Dill hurt the show.

Anime: (lost 1)
  • DragonBall Z

Anime actually lost 3, but some fit into other genres. Samurai Pizza Cats is technically anime and so it Pokemon. Sailor Moon is the obvious loss in the anime column though.

I heard the Ninja Turtles theme song in Toys'r'us today. I thought it was funny that it was mashed between Rihanna and some other modern pop song. It was so out of place, but it was pretty much the only song I payed any attention to while I was in there.

It's not number lost since the start of the competition, it's
# shows lost since page 11 (the last time I created the list)

(And frankly, categorizing some of the shows that were voted out before then would have been a bit difficult. We really nuked the truly non-standard stuff fast)

Kill: Ren & Stimpy - never really ran here, never really cared.
Kill: Ren & Stimpy

Save: TaleSpin - Loved this show as a kid

Too late to save Swat Kats... not too late to kill Ren & Stimpy

Kill: Pinky and the Brain

i've got nothing against Pinky and the Brain, but that's gonna be a casualty if i'm gonna save what is unquestionably a classic cartoon. we're having a repeat of Ed Edd n Eddy at this point, and that was ridiculous.
