The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

Huh, the link to SPERG is purple for me in Google, implying i've checked it before but... it actually looks decent, unlike other overhauls*, yet i don't remember it looking like that. I presume i've skipped SPERG previously because it requires the stat uncapper and SkyUI, the former being unnecessary and allowing even more god-like characters than the vanilla does, and the latter not being that good as i play on controller (the inventory management is slightly better but not enough for me to get over my general dislike of the mod).
Guess i could try SPERG with that mod that restores default UI but keeps SkyUI config menu.

*
-Requiem is not finished with magic still underway and all the numbers being hidden making it fucking annoying to use
-SkyRe adds stuff i find completely unnecessary. Bloated.
-Others tend to focus on single aspects.

You should try SkyUI paired with better message boxes.

I'm not sure but I think all SPERG uses the uncapper for is making it so you skip a perk every other level.

Yep. The uncapper is there mostly just for number-crunching. All skills still cap at 100.

The perk system is great. At 25,50,75,100 of every skill you're granted a specific basic perk(like making it easier to open locks with lockpick, making sneaking more better, etc). Most of the other perks add utility and creative ways to strengthen your character.

It's kinda difficult to ignore SkyUI. So many mods rely on it. Plus I run with a mod that boosts the player's ability to carry stuff by 100x. It's not unusual for me to carry 50+ outfits and dozens of weapons.

Noticed that. So that won't be an issue.

Many mods may rely on it but i don't use many mods.
My mod list is basically just unofficial patches, an overhaul (in theory, in practice don't have one), and a couple of small mods (like Aetherium equipment).
And a mod requiring SkyUI makes it easy to ignore the mod in the first place, for me
EDIT and i rarely carry a lot of stuff. One weapon, one set of armor, perhaps one set of clothing, potions and soul gems. And i don't loot but the most valuable stuff usually, at least after a certain point.

It's an amazing mod, but having to load Skyrim through an alternate launcher is slightly annoying.

Eh it's not that big a deal.
I made a shortcut to SKSE on my desktop. Loading NMM isn't necessary.
Only time I use the original Skyrim launcher is for messing with video settings.

Name of this mod?

How can you not use SkyUI. I use a controller all the time, and it's so much better.

Unnecessary.
I have less is more attitude to modding nowadays. Too many and it is a bloated mess.
Experienced that often enough with Morrowind.
I choose a few mods that give what i want from my current playthrough, on top of patches. EDIT last time i played Skyrim, i had those Aetherium equipment (though they ended up being worthless due to some issue or something), Companion Vilja, Better Standing Stones and Better Blessings (both).

I actually play Oblivion and Fallout 3 without UI mods too, though in these cases this was largely due to me having issues with getting UI mods to work (something about fonts apparently).

I just renamed the SKSE launcher to TESV.exe, and now Steam launches SKSE directly. My only issue with SkyUI is that it needs to be at the complete bottom of my load order, or the game won't load.

With the MCM and the new favorites menu I would hardly call it 'unneccessary'. But to each his own, I guess.

I'm very much a mod-noob, so I need a bit of a hand getting my ENB working like I would like. My friend walked me through getting the ENB mod working in the first place, but he gave me a very over saturated setting and I want a setting that's a bit more toned down and subtle, yet still impressive and different. Can someone link me to a good ENB setting and maybe help me get it installed? My other mods are all done through Steam Workshop so I don't know the ins and outs of modding the files quite yet.

I really need to wrap my head around this idea, myself. I just started playing on PC a few weeks ago and I fear I've gone crazy with mods - constantly installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, I can only imagine it's had a negative effect on my game. I really can't seem to make up my mind, I'm spoiled by choice.

Is it bad if I've installed and uninstalled both Skyre and Requiem on a single installation of Skyrim? If I'm not using either one currently do I need to worry about them effecting my game?

It doesn't really matter installation-wise, what matters is if you're still using it on the same save. That could potentially cause messiness.

Mods shouldn't change or replace any of the core stuff of the game.

SkyRE and Requiem are both overhauls, so don't use them together.

One good reason to stick with fewer mods is that TES games tend to become unstable and/or slow with many mods.
And then there's the content amount... the base game has a shit ton of content (i haven't see all of vanilla or Dawnguard content, and haven't even touched Heartfire and Dragonborn), and mods add even more that. Why add much stuff if you don't experience it?
And coherence. Whenever i use mods, i try to choose mods that fit together with themselves and base game, thematically.

My paranoia was unfounded then, thanks. I was just worried about some mods changing the game and not reversing those changes on uninstallation - wasn't sure how thorough NMM was.

Same, I haven't been to Solstheim once.

Script changes can be problematic, the most common changed script is, i'd imagine, the vampirism script. Pretty sure Requirem does change it but not sure about SkyRe. Either way, if you wanna play vanilla, you better have a back-up of the original.
No idea if NMM creates back-up of it.

Fortunately I've got a back-up standing by just in case.

Does Steam cache validation restore modified vanilla scripts by the way?
No. Deleting your scripts folder should, pretty sure all the base game's scripts are kept in Skyrim - Misc.bsa

Im at the point now, where Ive finished most of the big quests (the remaining ones are bugged and too much hassle to force my through, via console) and so, I just like wandering around killing stuff. Especially humanoids. The problem is, there just isnt enough stuff to kill in the open world.
Is there a good mod that ups the number of enemy encounters in the open world? IIRC, the respawn rate is set at 3 days or so. Ideally, I'd like to change that to 6 or 12 hours.
I just want more frequent combat opportunities, when I go wandering around.
I havent played Skyrim in ages but I couldnt find anthing on the Nexus that fit my above description, last time I checked.

I'd try to restrict any mod changes during a play-through to things that add/remove new content such as assets, armour, weapons, locations etc... plus updates of your initial mods. Switching between massive overhauls and script intensive mods like you've been doing is a recipe for headaches I'm afraid.

Less is more is a good lesson to learn, but (at least in the case of Skyrim and Bethesda titles in general) taking it to the extreme Woorloog does means you're foregoing some very effective stability/performance improvements. Here's a previous post I made with three of the most important ones, one of which can help with savegames that have had mods removed, "Safety Load" is another good one if you encounter loading glitches.

ie the game regenerates the scripts folder? Hmm, gotta try that sometime. Probably going to re-install Skyrim the next time i'll play it to get rid of stuff i don't need anymore.
If you reinstall the game or look at a fresh install, you'll notice that there are only a couple of folders in Data: strings, cutscenes and a couple of others. All the other files, textures, models, scripts, music etc... are kept in the BSA archives. So if you delete your scripts folder, or your textures folder, the game will revert to using the default files stored in the BSA archives. Obviously you should only do this if you're sure you haven't got a mod installed which needs the modified or new files kept in those folders.

Have you tried the patrols mod?

Try out skyrim immersive creatures adds a bit more variety to monsters you can choose between lore friendly and non lore friendly, Immersive patrols add quite a bit of patrolling bandits, creatures, skirmishes between imperials and stormcloaks also adds a few NPC's here and there.

I should specify that I've never ran more than one overhaul on a single save file - I was fairly confident that would mess up my game. Mainly I was worried about any lasting effects of the mods lingering even after they've been uninstalled. Example: I had Dynamic Loot installed earlier and when I didn't like the effects it had on my game I uninstalled it, but I think it permanently effected the loot tables of that particular save file (finding daedra hearts on every other slain enemy, etc). Maybe I would have just had to wait for the cells to refresh, I don't know.

Thanks for the tweaks, by the way. I didn't know about those.

I hope I avoid a lot of mod problems. I don't see myself constantly installing/uninstalling mods, and I'm trying to figure out which mods I'm going to use beforehand.

Immersive Patrols - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/12977/?
Adds more NPCs wandering the world. This can include scores of Imperial/Stormcloak troops so expect to see some epic combat opportunities.

Populated Forts - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/48651/? (The author has a series of similar mods for other locations in the game)
These mods can add a LOT of npcs.

OBIS - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31264/?
Adds a crapton of bandits. Hell you can even download an optional mod that replaces most of the wildlife with bandits. You won't be able to go 15 seconds without a fight.

Immersive Creatures and Monster Mod add a bunch of new enemies. Both are worth checking out.

Sperg is awesome. I got rid of Skyre, too much fiddling with it. Sperg, immersive patrols, deadly dragons, dragon combat overhaul, enemy ai overhaul, locational damage and expert difficulty = pretty awesome.

This sounds pretty sick. Have been looking for a new way to play without messing around with too many options. Appreciate it.

That's a reason I love Mod Organizer, when I want to try out a mod, I switch profiles install the mod try it out if I like it I keep playing on this new profiles save. If I don't then no biggie I can just revert to the profile before the mod got installed and won't have to start a new game.

Try going indoors and type PCB (Purge Cell Buffer) into the console.

One other thing : i just used tes5edit to clean my master files but should i clean all my mods or is it not necessary ?

(Obviously excluding mods that require those dirty edits to function properly like the convenient horses mod .)

Keep some test saves that are fairly along somewhat in the main game, install the mods, and then test them out.

Then start a new game, and try to keep the same mod order until you're done with it. The only exceptions should be texture/armor replacements and script-free mods (most mods on the nexus nowadays will state up front that they are script-free).

Not necessary.

BOSS is good here; it generally will mark any dirty mods that need to replaced by cleaned versions.

Just to make sure i got this in the right order .

Say i want to clean birds of skyrim .(bos for short)

I open TES5edit and i both check skyrim .esm .update.esm and birdsofskyrim .esp and click OK.

When it is done i right click on bos and click "remove identical from master records .

When that is done i again rightclick on bos and this time i click on " undelete and disable references .

Once that is done i close tes5edit to save .

Is this correct ?

So, those with heavy mod lists while using a big overhaul like Requiem or Skyre, do you crash a lot? If so, how often are crashes acceptable to you?

I CTD'd every once in a while running Requiem but I don't know how much of that was due to Requiem and how much was due to hi-res textures and whatnot.

Coming from playing Skyrim on PS3 I have a very high tolerance for crashes and freezes.

I've moved away from looking at Somber and Moody ENB's, and now my heart is set on RealvisionENB. I suppose I should begin crafting my mod list with the required and recommended mods from that page, then go from there.

Which version are you thinking of using: A.B.or C ?

I prefer C as it is more fantasy .

But the Realvision ENB page only has instructions for one preset, or am I missing the NOVA settings?

When you install realvision via the mod manager it asks which version you want A,B or C (Nova ) .

Select one and install .

also don't forget to activate NMM_install .vbs found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data\RealVision_ENB_files

Ah, okay. I was just thinking that I could use Wearable Lanterns along with 101Bugs to have a permanent lantern.

I did watch that. but i thought those steps where only for the master files (hearthfire , dawnguard etc ) ?

So the process is the same as that ?

Same process, except at the start where gopher selected Both the dirty file and it's master. All you have to do is select the mod you want to clean and tes5edit will load all the necessary files for you.

Man I'm impressed how much better you can make this game look even on a lower-end rig. I decided to get back into Skyrim after not playing it since mid-2012 or so (figured I'd finally finish the main quest and the DLC). Never got too hardcore into modding before beyond UI tweaks and armor mods but decided to be a bit more daring with trying the various visual improvement stuff on Nexus.

So far I installed Skyrim HD Lite, W.A.T.E.R, SMIM (medium textures), Better dynamic snow, Ruins Clutter Improved, Dynavision, Climates of Tamriel, and Wet and Cold. To be honest, not sure if some of those are conflicting, but all the same, the game just looks so much nicer than before. I'm not running these on any amazing hardware (C2D 2.8Ghz OC'd to 3.2, 4GB RAM, GTX 260M) but haven't noticed much of a performance hit. The ENB's I've tried so far (Saraan Suum Performance, RealLike) have knocked my FPS down to the sub-30's though, so I'm guessing ENB's may be beyond the capabilities of this system. But I think I'm pretty satisfied right now with how the games looks without those.
