Enjoyable premier. McConaughey killed it. Harrelson was fucking awesome with a dry humor. Slow and steady pace, show feels absolutely steeped in atmosphere.

I very much like how my take on Rust was very different to other peoples'! I think that's a sign of how well written these characters are.

Nah just a sign that you are wrong in thinking that Rust sees himself as a Jesus figure to the world. :)

But you are right in thinking that these are well-written characters.

Do we know that? Could be a copycat or something like that.
The guys interviewing Rust in 2012 mentioned that the present day kill had details to it that weren't public knowledge and matched the 95 case, so I guess they're ruling out a random copycat. Or at least doubtful of that.

that was a fantastic first episode. loved the moody atmosphere, and delicate pacing.

mcconaughey's turned into such a fine actor.

This show has a lot of potential, but hate having to wait a week for a new episode. Netflix has spoiled me releasing whole seasons at one time. Woody Harrelson is one of my favorite actors and very under rated. Not sure if it is because of his first goofy role in Cheers, his outspoken views on pot or political issues, but it seems he gets little love from award shows.

I didn't see a label on it. Could've been anything, but it seemed like NyQuil, Robitussin, or something like that.

Does NyQuil have alcohol in it? (we dont get it in Australia).

I think alcoholics drink cough medicine because of the alcohol in it makes it cheap to get drunk on it (not sure though). I dont think the brand was important so long as it was cough medicine.

As for my ideal combination for the second series:
Idris Elba and Robert Downey Jr

Yes, NyQuil is ~50 proof or something along those lines.

I can't fucking believe how good mconeghey is in this. It's blowing me away, I never liked his persona before this. Amazing show.

You're like the 5th person to say this in the thread.

Have some of you not been watching McConaughey's roles in the last 3 years? He's been on a tear.

everything he is in lately is fucking gold. Mud blew me away too. More people should watch it.

Easily one of my fave actors these days. Him + Nolan + the premise of Interstellar is enough to give any human a hard on.

I knew he had it him when I saw Frailty. Such an awesome movie.

Trivia: Frailty also begins with McConaughey being interviewed by cops, and the whole story is retold in flashback.

I don't question him for starring in chick flicks and summer blockbusters. Who would pass up the opportunity to star alongside the likes of Penelope Cruz?

In all honesty, no. I think the last thing I saw of him was Sahara. I will look for more recent entries after finishing my crow.

Check out Lincoln Lawyer.

Lincoln Lawyer was literally the start of the McConaughey glory train. Im fairly certain every single movie after that one has been a clear winner with him in it. This was the guy that starred in shit like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fools Gold. Hell there was even worse than those.

Start with The Lincoln Lawyer and follow it up with pretty much everything he's done since then. Him and Ben Affleck went to the Microsoft School of 180s.

Does HBO have to pay the movie stars in this show a lot more than they pay their regular HBO star actors?
I would assume so. I don't know how big the disparity is. FX noted today that they put in a bid for True Detective, and they implied that HBO was willing to throw a lot more money at it than they were.

No, we don't - but based upon
the facts that Rust and Marty had a big falling out, that Rust has since left the police force (and in disgrace), and that the killings have started again, I think that's where the plot is headed

I took his comments about how he meditates on the Agony in the Garden as an indication that he, at least in part, thinks his life is some kind of sacrifice that he's allowing to happen.

I wanna know more about that. Sounds interesting.

I wonder what work Rust does now that he's not with the police.

Why he got bounced intrigues me. Wonder if he knew the force had the wrong guy and he got ostracized for it.

Does anyone know the role of the guy wearing the blue uniform in the police department? He enters Major Quesada's office when Hart leaves, and Hart doesn't seem to like him. He's also standing alongside Quesada during the press conference.
The scenes he was in seemed to frame him like he was going to start talking because I expected it for some reason. Given that and Marty's reaction to him, I assume he's a character with some part to play in the department.
True Detective: A regular type dude with a big ass dick.
Haha great line, I'd forgotten about that.

A lot of these cough medicines, if not all, have a drug in it called Dextromethorphan which can get you pretty fucked up by itself, not to mention alongside alcohol. If it's night time cold stuff the mg dosage is usually a bit higher for a quicker/stronger high

Not that I would know....

Just finished it. Excellent thus far. And I loved The Wire cameos!
Those aren't cameos. These people need to continue working or they might not be able to pay their bills.

In all seriousness, I love that HBO recycles so many of their supporting actors. Kevin Dunn is a funny example. I always remember him best as the pathetic friend in the first season of Seinfeld. Now he's been in three HBO shows in as many years.

Which reminds me. I need to finish watching Luck.

I think there were just two The Wire actors? Maybe we'll get Bubbles in the second season.

He did drugs at his house.

He got up to "phone about his CI", came back sniffing and wiping his nose.
This is not what happened, just FYI. Martin asked Rust to just last 10 minutes, devised a plan to get Rust out of the house, staged the 'CI' phone call, but Rust didn't follow the plan and acted like it was nothing urgent. He wanted to stay, while Martin wanted him gone (since he was drunk). He was only away from the table long enough to take the phone call. No reason to think he took drugs as well.

[edit] I should say, I love the show so far. So much promise. I might watch the episode a second time, just because I missed certain lines and details
