serious question. what exclusives does xbox have in japan (that aren't from the west)?
Make fun all you want, but Microsoft courting Japanese developers has led to a lot of great games for me to play regardless of how successful it was for MS. I look forward to seeing what comes out of this.
Console Monster Hunter didn't sell anywhere near as much as its portable counterparts when the last one released on the console with the most marketshare in the previous gen. No moneyhat would make up for the amount of sales Capcom would lose on a console-only release on what's guaranteed to be the least popular system in a franchise where playing on the go and meeting up with other players in person is at the core of its appeal in its primary market.Just pay for that Next-Gen Monster Hunter game already MS.
the continuing relations part is odd to me because what did Microsoft try after ~2008? why would any Japanese dev that can get work elsewhere go with them based on their history?
the only thing I can think of is Cave and other bullethell shooters were exclusives for 360 after early last gen
Please don't pay money to keep Japanese games from going to nintendo/playstation. Thats all i ask.
I won't fall three times in a row to the same trap. A few games here and there at the beginning, and then, nothing. It happened with OG Xbox and Xbox360. If they get a few Japanese exclusives I'll wait untill they sell a Kinect-less SKU for cheap.
Just going from the past
lost odyssey
phantom dust
panzer dragoon (kind of)
jet set radio (kind of)
shmups
Those are the ones off the top of my head, there are probably more.
If they want to get Japanese games that's fine.
I just hope they don't pay to keep games off the PS4.

At this point, the Wii-U is poor and the Xbox One and PS4 are just starting, so Capcom could make a bet on either of the next-gen machines to see the series start off again and still make their 3DS versions.
They could go MS and then push the SmartGlass side of things for portable MH stuff, since Japan is all about mobile devices at this point, not just handheld consoles.
It's what Microsoft did for Titanfall though? Isn't it?that's not how exclusives work
I hope PG signs with MS, at least they will survive that way. If they don't get on board with MS then sadly I don't see them existing in a few years. Too many bombs.
Hypothetically, they could pursue next-gen MH, but do you really picture them seeing any real incentive to bother sinking resources into such a thing? The whole reason they cancelled the original PS3 version of Monster Hunter Tri and went with Wii instead was because they didn't want to spend the money such a thing would've cost. I wouldn't even count on a cross-platform 3DS/Wii U deal for a potential MH4G the way that MH3G/MH3U got.At this point, the Wii-U is poor and the Xbox One and PS4 are just starting, so Capcom could make a bet on either of the next-gen machines to see the series start off again and still make their 3DS versions.

Monsterhunter relies its multiplayer to not be segregated to go on the Xbox, with MS requiring non-cross platform play.

Something like SmartGlass would be no substitute for any hardcore franchise requiring actual buttons, let alone one like MH.
I think one of the best things that can come of a Microsoft X Japan relationship... is that it'll get Japan to make games that have more universal appeal on the system.
XB1 probably won't be a huge hit in Japan alone, and that makes any JP dev that decides to work on it, also face the idea that their game will have to appeal to the US, Germany, Australia, Europe, etc. So maybe we'll be less likely to see creepy pervy-otaku-ugh games, and more things like Gunvalkyrie, Phantom Dust, and Lost Odyssey.
It's just very annoying when so many Japanese games anchor themselves on overblown elements of perversion and sexual fanservice. It limits the appeal of the games even more than necessary, which not only hurts those particular games, but the general perception of Japanese gaming as a whole, on a worldwide scale.
Games like D4 and Crimson Dragon are a good first step. They offer a type of Japanese-born gameplay or personality that one can't find in similar games, and I think XB1 could do well to capitalize on bringing these games and developers, which seem shunned on other systems, towards a worldwide range of gamers.

A Japanese exclusive on Xbox One is the worst thing that can happen to a game in Japan. A developer would have to be really desperate to do a deal like that.

Platinum need to make games that can sell. I don't think going Xbox exclusive will help their situation. They can't keep having their games bomb forever.
So you're saying these sorts of Japanese games are more successful on Xbox?Games like D4 and Crimson Dragon are a good first step. Are you serious?
I mean, they pay a developer for creating a game for Xbox One, exactly like Sony and Nintendo do for their systems.
Hint: japanese developers may also want to sell in the west?
Some developers just need to work and develop games, regardless of the target market.
Again. Sony paying for PS4 exclusives = good.
Microsoft paying for XB1 exclusives = bad?
Well, you also have Blue Dragon, Otogi I and II, Breakdown and some other japanese exclusives.
Not a bad list, actually.
Your mistaken. Many of the titles 360 got where money hatted. MS did not fund the development of such titles just ensured that they were exclusive to 360. However, after they bombed they made their way onto PS.

I would kill for a new Otogi. Damn game could look stunning and have loads more weirdness in it.
We'll probably never know who Mistwalker would have partnered with if not Microsoft, I think it would have been a longer-lasting, more fruitful relationship if it was a major Japanese publisher targeting more than 360.Titles like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon were funded by MS iirc. No one is complaining about stuff like that. In fact thats a good thing.
At this point it would be interesting to provide a pair of examples.![]()

I guess with how Microsoft handles the business side of things sometimes it makes people assume the worst more often than not. It makes discussions that have anything to do with Microsoft and money rather toxic, even if they own the IP rights to the game.Your mistaken. Many of the titles 360 got where money hatted.
