Anime/MangaGaf: Out of the Big 3, which do you enjoy the most?

I don't watch any of them because I'm a grown adult and I've got a job!

Watch One Piece but as far as action manga goes, the only one to really ever grab me was Berserk. It's hard focusing on action mangas when there's jus so much delicious smut to read out there <3

why does everyone think the first two arcs in bleach are the best? I'm not going to try and prove you wrong, but I'm curious as to why people think that. I've already said it in this thread, but I thought the best arc in Bleach was the fight against the Espada.

Edit: Hueco Mundo/Fake Karakura Town Arc

The first arc was great because of how naturally it told the story of Ichigo getting involved in the dangerous world of Soul Reapers and Hollows and how he unintentionally dragged his friends along for the ride. Events had natural consequences, and it focused on strong character development with a small, strong cast of likable characters. It was also the only arc (of those I read) where Rukia and Ichigo's interactions with each other were a major driving part of the story.

The Soul Society Arc was effectively a completely different Manga from the first arc. It abandons just about everything from the first arc, but it manages to stand on its own merits as a fairly cool supernatural, political action story. At its heart was a great mystery and political drama built around a seemingly united Soul Society that begins to crack apart into civil war. It had a complex mix of interesting characters whose various motivations drove them to make different responses to a series of irregular events. Really, Ichigo and his friends were a sideshow from what made the Soul Society Arc good.

Then Aizen shows up and completely ruins the basic premise of that political mystery and the entire characterization of the Soul Society is quickly swept under the rug. Up until Aizen actually comes back, the logical premise was that he was trying to drive a wedge between the 13 court guard companies and cause the Soul Society to self-destruct. Nope. He just wanted a MacGuffin that was not previously hinted at and had enough power to curbstomp the entire Soul Society with little justification. Him doing so unities the Soul Society together, destroying all of the tension that made the arc good.

Then in the subsequent arcs, the manga devolves into a series of battles against increasingly inconsequential, under-developed opponents. While there are some bright spots, they seemed like they were getting buried by the rest.

Really, the fighting was always one of the weaker aspects of Bleach. While it does have some good fights, the best part was in the characters and how drama flowed so naturally from the characters' actions. Later arcs just lacked that, and the Soul Society arc ended badly because it failed to live up to its premise.

I love One Piece, tolerate Bleach, and hate Naruto.

I've ready every One Piece manga chapter and i've seen every One Piece anime episode. I've ready every Bleach manga chapter but I haven't seen the anime. I read one chapter of Naruto and deemed it shit and never touched it again.

I always thought of the "Big three" in terms of American exposure to anime as Dragon Ball (Z), Sailor Moon and Pokémon. But in terms of the titles listed here, I'd have to say One Piece.

...Even though I've stopped at about volume 21 of the manga.

...And the fact that I've never watched nor read Naruto/Bleach.

I'm probably a shitty anime fan, come to think of it. :(

One Piece, but not in single episode doses. It just goes way too slow for that, especially after the 1 chapter : 1 episode ratio used during Enies Lobby. I wait for about 10 episodes or so before watching them.

The filler in episodes doesn't get too bad but when they mess up they mess up really bad I've seen like with that added scene of Hody Jones that completely contradicted his character and how they handled Grizzly Magnum.

I love the creativity of the locations and all the personality traits of the characters. The unique laughs are a thing of genius. Likewise the odd personality quirks make minor characters so much more memorable. I just saw Diamante for the first time in today's episode and I adore him already.

I just hope that Oda doesn't let the Haki plot device lead him into DBZ's pitfalls of "powerlevels" running the show.

Wow that pacing thing is incredibly true. I didn't really compare the manga to the anime, because I watched up to the current episode a while ago (end of fishman island), and just started reading the manga from there, but if I think about it individual episodes are really slow.

I don't know if you're caught up with the manga, but it doesn't seem like they're using the haki for that to me.

Enies Lobby best arc tho, although I'm really liking the current arc

Yeah once I caught up I'd stop watching and wait for all of the episodes in an arc to become available before going through them at my own leisure. It's a pain waiting like a year between arcs but it makes for good times. My roommate's even got hooked with Punk Hazard.

And rightly so. Bleach is possibly the most overrated manga in the history of Jump. If the manga continued with the same quality that the first 2 opening arcs had then it might deserve to be regarded as one of the "Big 3" of this generation. And even then, Bleach's best was barely better than Narutos best (Zabuza arc) and the best of One Piece is simply in a different league to the both of those.

My problems with Bleach? Well where to fucking start...

The main character Ichigo. So many things wrong with this character. He has as much charisma as a fucking log. He pretty much has every form of power introduced to the manga. Shinigami powers, Hollow/Vizard powers, the type of power he gained when he lost his shinigami powers (the power those useless side characters Chad and Inoue have) and now he's also a fucking Quincy. Mfw, talk about trying to force him into every damn plot detail...

Aizen. What a shit villain. Ridiculously overpowered with his bs illusions. He got fucking beat by Ichigo instead of all these experienced, powerful captains like the vizard shinji, kyoraku, unohana. I can't even remember why but it was some bullocks reason... Ichigo being the only person to not see Aizens shikai and hence being able to see through Aizens illusions... Then why the fuck didn't Aizen just show him his shikai??? Jesus...

That kinda brings me to the power levels. There are so many examples showing how screwed up they are. But let me bring you to the latest case. Two vizard captains were beaten easily by one quincy. Guess who fucking beats that quincy? Fucking Renji.... :lol
Renji with a new outfit... mfw

There's also the lack of backgrounds, ridiculously big tits, that pointless arc between aizens defeat and the quincys etc

Oh and the quincys. Weren't they introduced as people who pretty much only use archery? With a couple little gadgets here and there? When's the last time we've seen a quincy use a bow and arrow?

Tbh, mate, Bleach just sucks. Sorry. The story is an absolute mess and Kubo is just dragging this out for the $$$.

It´s one piece that the most overrated crap in jump. You only have to look at this thread to know how much one piece is. Lol " one of the best fiction ever"

Ichigo is a much better and more developed protagonist than Luffy will ever be.

Most one piece characters are one dimensional characters, who never develop or grow in any way shape or form.

Most power up in one piece are pulled out of the ass without any explanation of how they got it.

Aizen is a better villain and a character than the entirety of the one dimensional one piece cast.

The "art" of one piece is ugly, cluttered, same with the characters.

Not to mention of how Oda always side lines women in the manga.

The world government stood aside and let Blackbeard take Whitebeard´s power. Then they let him go. Really?

Oh yeah, Luffy is second coming of Roger, he looks and acts like Roger more than Ace did lol. Shit writing about incoming Jesus that is an exact copy of the previous one.

One piece is overrated at best and at worst, like Skypia, Fishmen island and Thriller Bark, it´s one of the worst thing in Shonen.

For starters, the "Big 3" is a myth. One Piece is so astronomically huge that nothing else compares.

It's also my favourite.

If that's true, why does it seem to have the lowest animation budget?
Not hating, on topic, it's the only one of the big 3 I can still stand watching, but it always felt rather ghetto when you straight compare the fights for instance.

Only one person in this thread said that and you're being just as hyperbolic as him/her.

Everyone else is saying One Piece mostly in relation to the other 2.

Historically, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon and Pokemon are the "big 3" animes, hell, even Evangalion is a bigger property than those three. One Piece and Bleach are not even marginally as big of a media property worldwide as SM or DBZ, Naruto being the closest and still far behind.

Only thing I can partially agree with is Oda sidelining women in the manga.

Bleach is horseshit now, I lost total interest
after Aizen is defeated and fullshit arc rolls around.

Naruto has had its ups and downs recently but has remained consistent IMO, still enjoyable to read.

Like others have said, One Piece is BY FAR the king here, after
chapter 631
I literally couldn't breathe. Just incredible story-telling overall although I have some character development issues.

As for the big three, I feel Bleach has long since fallen from that title, and many WSJ covers have Ichigo pushed in the background as Naruto and Luffy still remain in the spotlight. Has Toriko replaced Bleach?

Another vote for One Piece.

Though for the record, it was originally my least favorite. I started off watching the dubs on TV for each, so One Piece was at a disadvantage with the 4kids dub on Fox Box. And I think One Piece starts off a lot slower than Naruto and Bleach, bad dub or not.

But Bleach became extremely disappointing right after the big Soul Society/Rukia Rescue arc. Hueco Munro was a huge letdown, and the war against Aizen was somehow worse). I lost interest after his pathetic defeat. I only pick it up when my favorite characters doing something now (Soi Fon!!...didn't last long enough, dammit!)

Naruto has been on a very slippery slope since the arc that introduced Sai and Yamato. Everytime something good happens, something equally bad occurs as well and negates the good. And the recent war arc has obliterated each and every big fight that I was anticipating. I was following just to see how Naruto and Sasuke's big fight would go down. But I can't even be bothered to care about that now given what's happened. Now I'm looking because....well, might as well see how it ends.

One Piece however had several high spikes after its slow start. And unlike Naruto and Bleach, it never nose dived after peaking. That's not to say that every arc is better than the last, but it has a much higher level of consistency.

And when it comes to series like this, the most important thing to me is the development of multiple characters and plot points over time all while continuously adding new characters and plot points to the mix. Oda is extremely good at this. But unfortunately, both Kubo and (especially) Kishi have been guilty of axing the development of previous characters and retconning plot lines.

Umm.. Nope.

Dragon Ball is the king of kings, no doubt, so I'll stop there in regards to DB.

Pokemon is a much more popular game franchise than it is an anime. In fact, the show is based off of the original video games. Definitely wasn't know for it's manga.

Lastly, Sailor Moon... Really?!

Of these three manga in particular I like One Piece the most, though it feels a little slow and uninteresting at the moment.

Bleach started off pretty decent and remained that way for a while, then got a little boring, then became pretty awful for like two years straight, and now it's gotten better (though I still wouldn't call it amazing or anything). For a while now battles in Bleach progress in a way I'm not that fond of.

Naruto has a decent chapter every now and then, but Part 2 has more misses than hits. It was more consistent in quality than Bleach, but I think it's gotten worse than Bleach recently.

In terms of a few other action series I've been reading, I like Beelzebub and One Punch Man but they have a flow that works better for me when there's several chapters, so I usually stop reading those for a few months then read everything up to the latest chapter. I don't watch much anime, especially those based on shounen manga, but I'm a few episodes into Hunter x Hunter and so far I like it. I also watched Attack on Titan and started reading from where it left of, it's interesting but right now it feels like it's going through a slow build up for a big payoff later.

One Piece is just so much better than the other two that it's not really a competition.

Bleach has decent action but a lot of white space. The 'plot', that doesn't really exist for anything besides more meaningless fight scenes, which are also extremely predictable, takes an abhorrent amount of time to develop very simple details. Most characters that aren't Ichigo don't really serve a purpose, unless they somehow get Ichigo from point A to point B.

Sometimes I wonder how Naruto actually gets written. There seems to be a lot of dialogue for what often seems like nothing. At the very least, it does have a plot, it's just also the kind of plot that seems to have been thought up by a 12 year old and made as needlessly large as possible to make the greatest amount of money. It also has a huge cast for seemingly no reason, because anything interesting that happens only happens to the main couple characters. Although having a main cast and any semblance of an actual story probably makes it at least a better read than Bleach, but unfortunately not quite as mind numbing.

But actually, anyone who wants good action should read HunterxHunter and despair about updates like the rest of us.

One piece but that doesn't say much, the story is becoming way too big, (too many characters to focus on, not enough pages to explain) to the point where now it takes 5-10 chapters to move story forward instead of 1-5 chapters.

If that's true, why does it seem to have the lowest animation budget?
Not hating, on topic, it's the only one of the big 3 I can still stand watching, but it always felt rather ghetto when you straight compare the fights for instance.
Because none of them really look that good. But Naruto and Bleach have art styles that are easier to emulate, especially on a smaller budget.

Naruto. The Pain arc dragged out and I can see why people didn't like it. Other than that Naruto has no other arcs that I've disliked unlike Bleach and One Piece. We're at the end game so the fights have been really top tier lately and I love it.

One Piece definitely has the best world out of the three + whenever a Yonko, Shichibukai, or Admiral makes an appearance
like in the current arc
you should expect the arc to be good.

Bleach stopped being good after the Ichigo vs. Ulquiorra fight imo.

Can I Be the minority? Magi and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Magi is by far one of my favorite new Shounen manga.and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is just well bizarre and I love it

Also Dio Brando is my favorite anime/manga villain of all time.

I'd definitely rate Jojo higher than most other shounen, certainly more than the three OP states. Especially around the Josuke arc, the Stand powers just get so creative, the characters are genuinely interesting and the villains, despite having some sympathetic traits, are still very much evil and the story doesn't muddy that message up (unlike, say Naruto).

Now as for the big 3 i'm gonna have to go with Naruto, I don't know why but I HATED Part 1 and the only Arc I like was the Zabuza Arc and its still the best arc in the series by far but Part 2 is getting.. kinda better, the last few chapters are a little bit of a clusterf*ck
I Mean.. Kishimoto may kill off Sasuke (hopefully)because it seems like his endgame in the current chapters now.right?

I liked Part 1 more than Part 2, but Part 2 had some standouts. Sasuke vs. Orochimaru, Pain vs. Jiraya, Pain. vs. Naruto, Sasuke vs. Itachi, and Orochimaru coming back gave me some hope for a while. But the war arc has ruined most of the serie's credibility in my eyes. It's rushed, forced, has no immediate sense of danger, created plot holes, and is just kind of boring. So many DBZ-like shenanigans is just going too far, and I may like DBZ but I liked Naruto because it was Naruto, not DBZ.

Might pick up reading again just to see Sasuke die if that's actually happening as you say it is, tho.

You do realize that OP has surpassed DBZ as the worlds best selling manga/anime correct?

Bleach lost all grim and tension after the Hueco Mundo arc. The arrancar were pushovers, the super chunky monster as well and I was expecting something menacing after it's first reveal, the royal guard are clowns and isshin's backstory kinda lame. It still has some elements I like, such as some characters designs, so I still read it in expectation something cool happens with the spirit king. But the quincy so far have been disappointing and it will end up with the main villain fighting everyone else just like what happened with aizen.

Where do I start with One Piece? Should I read the manga or the anime? I would prefer the anime but I hear it's full of filler and boreness, is there some kind of abridged version more loyal to the manga's pace?

One Piece is incredible... but it took like 120 or so chapters for it to get good. I still can't fathom how many creative ideas Oda keeps showcasing with the devil fruit powers.

Naruto I just couldn't care anymore about anyone after the timeskip.

Bleach was phenomenal in saving Rukia arc, everything else just wasn't entertaining.

I'm probably a Narutard, but I admit I've never seen One Piece. I enjoyed Bleach to an extent as well though. I'm sure I'll enjoy One Piece if I ever start watching it.

Female character treatment is probably the one thing that bugs me most in One Piece. I actually think its worse in Naruto though. They spent a chapter hyping up Sakura, but then she sat down with the side characters while the REAL BOYS did the work.

Even though it's not a war in a real sense, One Piece showed how a shonen war should look like, while Naruto's is conceptually dumb and lazy (basically a fighting game plot). It is sort of emblematic what's wrong with the world-building in that series, or at least how its used (Bleach is arguably just as bad). Hunter x Hunter and One Piece are very well done in comparison so it is no surprise to me if people are more invested in their settings (which for me is the main appeal of shonen).

there honestly isn't a whole lot of filler in One Piece compared to the other three, but to maintain this they've had to cut the pacing down considerably. however, that doesn't really become an issue for like 300 episodes. if you REALLY prefer anime i'd say go for that and then switch over to the manga eventually, but if you want to just get caught up quickly go for the manga.

This is a One Piece thread.

The person up there who's actually comparing Ichigo to Luffy is hilarious. Bleach is nothing more than a fashion magazine now.

Out of the big 3, my vote goes to Naruto.
Bleach started off really amazing but I didn't care much about the other characters, then it drifted off and became bored with the story.

My current favourite anime is Hunter X Hunter. I'm hooked and can't wait to see what happens.

Stop being such a fucking brat, your incessant whining over and over is grating. One Piece is something that's always been close to me so I'm going to think it's one of MY favorite pieces of fiction, just like I said. To ME. Everything you pointed out is completely untrue, except MAYBE how the women are sidelined a bit. Stop being so daft and face the facts.

He's been doing it for years, don't take it personally. I just tend to ignore him.

Also, one piece is easily the best. Naruto was starting to get it back, but I had to drop it when it was going flashback-flashback-flashback for no reason. Yuck.
