Apex 2014 | Fighting Game Tournament | Jan 17-19

Makes sense. He doesn't really see smash in a competitive light, and everyone else likes it. "Hey the people you don't care for don't like the game you made ". It surprised me when he actually said he was gonna make it more a bit more like melee.

what he doesn't realize is that it doesn't cost anything to do so though

also obligatory ResidentSleeper, so boring, etc.

I'm gonna have to accuse these commentators of fake hype after that so-called double grand finals announcement but then again they could really just love Brawl.

The Japanese commentary at the moment is much more entertaining than the English one.

I hope they do more of these bilingual streams, it's really entertaining and interesting to watch.

On the other hand,I want Melee/Project M and Prog on the mic already...

Btw, are we still gonna have a salty suite today to make up for the cancelled one yesterday? Tourney was running way too slow.

Ugh... don't like MK dittos.
It's year 20XX for brawl, no hype?

no zero suit samus to save the day like last year huh

I doubt we ever see a Grand Finals as hype and fantastic as last years, honestly. We were close with esam maybe, but seriously that Salem + M2K set is just the best thing ever.

edIt:

Competitive Brawl gives a whole new meaning to the term "meta-game".

Somebody has probably already made that joke, but I couldn't help myself.

..how have I never heard this

As if casual players hated Smash until Brawl...

You can satisfy both parties, which he did for two games in a row.

I thought Meta Knight was banned from tournies. What's up with that?

No, not anymore. He was banned in 2012 for like six months by a group of biased players and the large majority of the competitive player base didn't run with it. So then the group disbanded and the rule for him being banned was lifted, which was right before Apex 2013.

Lots of players play MK (mostly the higher-level guys that matter and draw attendance to tournaments) or have a pocket MK that if he really was banned permanently the player base would be effectively smaller. As much as he dominates the metagame and people hate him, the same people play him and don't want him banned despite how much more diverse the characters in tournaments would be.

It's also because the character isn't broken like Akuma in ST. He's beatable but just very dominant and overcentralizing.

In terms of the comparison of Fox in Melee, while Fox is just as everywhere he has weaknesses that are very exploitable and makes it possible for lower tiered characters to do well against him (like we saw this weekend with aMSa's Yoshi) -- whereas MK's weaknesses aren't as exploitable and lower tiered characters in general have less options in Brawl compared to Melee so the gap is even wider for those characters. That's why last year it was so impressive for ZSS to win it (but it was also just a one time thing aka a fluke or happy accident).

Basically: MK is the worst thing in Brawl.

I think more of nintendo should look into what their communities enjoy. I really do , i think them being more.. player oriented than they are now, would greatly benefit. And they kind of already are in many respects, but nintendo likes to.. tell people what they want even if they are right a good amount. A nintendo game comes out and there is a good chance its good. However I do think them being more invested in communities with in their games, would be beneficial. And hope they tale that stance.

even then though, if nintendo were to take that stance, what does that has to do with sakurai. Masahiro sakurai seems to be set in his beliefs in game design and how he feels about it. And the competitive smash community for the most part seems like something he doesn't care for since it kind of goes against what he thinks smash is. Along with that, its a minoirty, I would love for sakurai to be have more of... a small interest in it. ( nothing major some smashers are nuts, waluigi for smash my ass ) but I dunno look at som stuff. But there really isn't any reason for him to look at that. Ever.

Competitive players, as a whole, are really hard to get behind banning characters/cards etc.

There were several Olimars but they couldn't make it.

To be honest, any Olimar worth their salt don't get gimped easily.

I agree, but at the same time the option is there. When you get to top 20 the margin of error is so tiny I feel it's harder to manage when going against meta after meta, a character who has priority and isn't gimped at all. Really levels the field in the end.

Then again, it didn't seem like any of the bigger Olimars even showed (didn't see any Dabuz or nietono this year at all)

just seen last years final with the guy using zero suit. That was amazing.

Almost want to rewatch it for the millionth time instead of this current one.

Rich Brown, Denti, and a few others showed up. The others quit the game. A lot of people quit the game because most tournaments have dissolved to Ice Climbers and Meta Knight mains running all over the place.
