Based on the discussion of his past with the modern day detectives, I don't think its him becoming more violent at all. More like, reverting to past form.
That part bothered me more than a bit. Not that it seemed weird, but that whether he was checking if it got elevated. He handled that confrontation so clinically, it makes me question him having sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies.
Does anyone else feel like Rust is a more realistic representation of a Sherlock Holmes type character?
A couple other people I've been talking to have picked up on the same thing. I really hope that's the direction it goes in.So with all the King in Yellow stuff, does anyone else feel a bit like this is The Tale of Inspector Legrasse expanded into a TV show?
Great back and forth:
"Is that a down payment?"
"Is shitting on any moment of decency part of your job description?"
Good points - I don't know how the production schedule is impacted by the demands placed on the writer/director, and recasting every season could also potentially be problematic in terms of scheduling. On the other hand, with everything that is ending on HBO this year and the amount of buzz that True Detective is picking up, I feel like they'll want to make a commitment to more TD sooner rather than later. iirc, it took them around three months to film S1, so they will have to keep things moving at a brisk pace to keep it on an annual schedule. I wonder if Pizzolatto got the greenlight from HBO to keep on writing a while ago. It's a lot of pressure on a single writer.I suspect this might be a more extended process than most series.
This was 8 episodes by a single director and a single writer. I believe photography began last February. If they want to keep this kind of consistency, they'll need time to put everything together. They've got to find a new cast, new locations, possibly a new director (Fukunaga has a few film projects he may want to move onto), presumably give time for Pizzolatto to handle the scripts, etc.
I don't know, we'll see. I'm curious to see how they proceed. I wouldn't be shocked to this not be a regular annual series.
He killed a meth head that injected his 1 year old baby with crank in order to "purify" her.Of course he is a sociopath. If I heard right, Cohle killed someone that landed him in jail. His past presents the opportunity to go undercover.

Damn thats one hot pieces of boobs.
At this point I am more interesting in Rust's character than the murder plot.
That's what drove his sociopathy is what I'm saying. I think Rust said he killed others during his undercover days.
Now that I think of it, this makes the dinner table scene in episode one even more stark knowing he was referring to a murder unrelated to policing while answering Marty's daughters' question.
The murder plot is progressing at a glacial pace and to be honest the plot is not all that compelling.
I was also wondering if it has to do with cast. Normally a show is renewed, the principal cast is under contract, so no work has to be done there. I'm curious if they have to cast new leads before they announce the official order.Good points - I don't know how the production schedule is impacted by the demands placed on the writer/director, and recasting every season could also potentially be problematic in terms of scheduling. He killed the guy that injected his baby daughter and three cartel members later. Both of those sound directly related to his police work, and his response to Marty's daughters implies he recognizes a desire to not kill people. I think his nihilism is motivated mostly by his daughter's death but I don't know that we can call him a full on sociopath just yet.
Rust does not display anything that classifies him as a sociopath. He is mean and cynical, and can get aggressive when the need arises, and he trips out from time to time. But that's it. Not sure what you're seeing in him other than that. Why are you acting like there is something inherently wrong with sociopaths? From what I can tell of Rust, his past has driven his psyche to sociopathy. This mixed with the nature of his job makes him dangerous, but in control. His PTSD from the loss of his daughter is what will cause his inevitable derail, I think.
I'm rewatching this tonight to pick up on lost details.
Please.. Someone make a thread asking this: Has any actor in the history of film reinvented their image so succesfully as Matthew McCougnehey?? and in such a sort while.
He's likely set for life and can just do what he wants now. This guy, just two years ago was on my most obnoxious list along with Justin Bieber and the CEO of Monsanto. What the hell happened???
Heath Ledger? Granted, it was only one role, but a lot of people I've talked to hated him before The Dark Knight.
Saw first episode. Holy shit. the lighting was better than in some hollywood movies. The fucking killed it.

The murder plot isn't the reason I tune in, it's all about the characters, and they're fantastic so far.
I mean, they've already established that they caught someone, and it's probably the wrong guy.
I think the 2012 detectives are thinking it was Rust who committed the murders.
You think so? If they suspected him, I would've thought they'd get a little more hostile in their questioning than they have been so far.

Or he had a partner that they didn't catch.
The murder plot definitely isn't the main reason to watch. Hell I wouldn't even say the characters, plural. It's pretty much just Rust lol.
but now the guy preaching on him is a typical hypocrite sort of. Has pretty much no right to act righteous.I like Rust a lot too, but the show would get really preachy w/o Marty being there to knock him down a notch.
Marty is the Mark Frost to Rust's David Lynch.
I was wondering it that was meant to be Dora in the picture or if Cohle was projecting the image of his daughter again. She was probably too old to be his daughter. That whole scene was unsettling with the woman's illness as well as the "father bathing his daughter" line.I don't remember where they were exactly, but what are thoughts on that picture Rusty was looking at in that house that showed a girl surround by 4 hooded/masked men on horses? They zoomed in on it twice but I don't remember either character mentioning it at all.

Its got to be the wrong guy. Look they have
2 weeks to catch the guy on their own, Marty will fight with his wife a couple more times, and if my hunch is right, the hot boobs will turn up dead, that will take at lease 2-3 episodea, and then the task force will take over and catch the wrong guy, Rust will hook up with Maggie.
By the 7th epiaode, the framing device will wrap back to the two black detectives telling them the detail of the new detail. And Rust and Marty will work together one last time to catch the real killer.
Its really a movie in long form.
In a twist ending it will be revealed that Marty is the killer. I'm calling it now.
