Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

This was an irresistible insta-preorder due to the allure of having RE4 in 60 fps and finally with good image quality (4x SGSSAA will be fun), but the still missing dof and specular highlights are annoying. It seems quite cynical to advertise the game as the "Ultimate HD Edition" when it is mostly similar to the already released versions for 360 and ps3 (which also lacked the extra effects).

Btw, is locked 60 fps confirmed or do you guys think there is any chance for 120 fps?

I've never actually played RE4 (yeah, I know, I'm missing out), so I went ahead and pre-ordered. $20 isn't that expensive, and since I never actually owned the game, I don't have to feel bad about double/triple/quadruple dipping.

You've done well.

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Welcome back, stranger!

I like it!

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Securing the Ballistics, One Last Time.

Heh.

Nice to see it get another release. Bought it on my Wii ages ago and still haven't played it. Was gonna buy the PS3 HD version but no invert aim option was horrible.

Doubt my PC can handle this so might wait.

I think there's a small chance.

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Durante is on standby.
Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Of looking up Ashley's skirt in 60 FPS
Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Of trying to forget Resident Evil 6. And 5. And Operation Raccoon City.

I wonder if animations would gain much from going to 60fps, let alone 120fps.
Animations are always compressed to take up less space/memory and are normally sampled at near the target fps. So going to 120fps would mean that all animations are interpolated between their actual key frames. You actually see this quite often in games when you activate a slower timescale/slowmo or bullet time. Feet start to shift to the next key frame etc...
Still the higher frame rate might be nice for character control.

I think this is a really good, even-handed summary (with the exception of the "really *popping* off the screen" part, which is somewhat vague language). The only thing I would add is that what this version lacks, in addition to the visual effects already mentioned, is the Wiimote control scheme. I believe this is the biggest factor when someone is choosing between the Dolphin version and this PC version: What matters more: the Wiimote control scheme, or the additional smoothness of 60 FPS. I'd wager there are folks on both sides of that divide, and I respect the opinion of anyone who values 60 FPS more.

You don't have to choose between Wiimote and 60fps now. Since this version will have proper mouse support, you can connect your Wiimote to your pc via bluetooth and play it just like the real thing, but at twice the framerate. It will also be better than doing the same thing on the old port which had terrible mouse code, which would then mean the pointer wasn't smooth and consistent. You can also use something like the Razer Hydra on PC to get Wiimote style pointer controls (not just in this game) if you don't want to deal with a sensor bar and want more buttons etc.

PC has the most options to tailor your experience exactly how you want it.

Oh shit, I've never actually played through this game. Will definitely pick it up if this version turns out to be good.

Hmm, I might finally give this game a go!

How I envy you....

Well, not really. The game probably wont be as mind blowing as it was for the rest of us 9 years ago - I hope people who are coming in fresh take the time to adjust to the controls and give the game a proper chance to show them what it does so well.

It's weird, I finally buy a new gaming PC and RE4 gets announced for it. I couldn't be happier!

I generally prefer older games anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Ooh, I've never done OT suggestions before. Can I, pa?

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| How about we do some overtime?
Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Ahh, I'll buy it a high price
Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| Not all that ultimate, really.

Seems like they added crappy sharpening to them as well.
So missing fx and reduced quality textures, might have to wait for the next release.

It's disgraceful that they're charging this much money for this. The old PC port with the community texture pack had better textures overall than this. Capcom continues to disgust me more and more. Of course, everyone's hoping that all missing things will be able to be patched in either via mods or by Sourcenext themselves, but that's just an assumption, and they're still charging that kind of money for an inferior product.

Yes, I'm cynical and bitter.

You both are. I see no signs of sharpening in the textures. They certainly aren't worse than what was in previous versions, unless you are talking about texture packs, which personally I don't like. Even if you are like every other RE game on PC I imagine you will be able to replace all the textures with a fan made pack here.

Your community pack will likely still work, and in 60 fps. With better lighting and effects to go with it, and higher poly environments, and more control options.

This is not an inferior version to the original PC version in any way. That is horrible hyperbole.

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC |OT| 67 Playthroughs and Counting

Oddly, I'm tempted to go get the GCN version again. I've got the Wii version, but I'm curious about those GC effects now that I have a way to play it on a monitor.
