I feel like anyone voting to kill Batman TAS or The Simpsons at this stage is doing it for the sake of chaos rather than trying to make a pick based on what they think was best or should be nixed next.

Oh well.
Personally, I only care about one show winning. What makes the top 5 or 3 doesn't matter to me. Enough of my favorites made the top 10.

Oh well.

I always took this thread as Cartoons you enjoyed as a kid targeted towards kids in the 90s. Even though I watched the Simpsons later on and enjoyed the show I don't think it's the same kind of cartoon targetting the same demographic as everything else on that list.

I actually watched more Simpsons between the ages of 5-13 than I have as an adult (well, until I bought seasons 2-10 on DVD after college). Bart & Lisa in school really clicked with me and a lot of the physical humor killed me, and I never felt talked down to.

I remember being grounded for the reveal of Who shot Mr. Burns and trying to sit in my door frame(still inside my room!) and listen to see if I could make out who it was. Probably the worst punishment I could have ever recieved at that time. :lol

Yea but I am pretty sure we weren't the target audience. I mean the time the show came on let us know that. Sunday at 8pm as opposed to many of the other cartoons that had AM times or if PM much ealier then 8.

Like I said just my opinion. I felt the same way about South Park. They were shows that spoke about themes that usually go over kids heads at times with enough slapstick and immature humor to make kids laugh.

I'd say part of The Simpsons' overwhelming success was how it appealed to all ages, really.

Adults could get into stories about Homer going on strike as a union leader while kids could crack up at how silly Homer's attitude was. Everyone could definitely laugh at the average episode of the Simpsons, especially by season 6 or 7 when things got kind of nuts.

I saw very little Simpsons growing up. I finally saw classic Simpsons by binge watching a few years ago. It is pretty fucking spectacular... and shocking.

See, I mostly glimpsed newer season episodes over the years and they were very unfunny and terrible. It led me to think the whole show was never that good. I assumed the fondness for old Simpsons was nostalgia, because there was no way a show could be as great as people claimed while I'm sitting there watching an episode from season 1x with stone-faced boredom.

The Simpsons and Batman both deserve to win first place.

there are very few animated shows that might win out against the simpsons for me. king of the hill, avatar: the last airbender, cowboy bebop... i think that's it. and that's taking the good with the bad. classic simpsons is unmatched.

and the 90s simpsons is almost completely classics simpsons.

I decided to keep Hey Arnold off the chopping block and replace it with DBZ.

Kill: Rugrats
Kill: DBZ

EDIT: Changed my vote to kill DBZ instead of Hey Arnold!. Both Rugrats and DBZ were amazing shows, but they are both inferior in terms of content when compared to Hey Arnold. Dragon Ball Z was and still is amazing in my books, it's was a masterpiece...for it's time; before the revolution of the internet I, and I bet most of us, didn't know a whole lot about anime other than what was dubbed for after school and saturday morning cartoons. If this thread included other 90's anime then the top 10 would look a lot more different right now; Sure Sailor Moon was in the original list of shows for this thread, but can you imagine what it would be like if Cowboy Bebop was included in this thread? This brings me to think that, in my opinion and despite my choice to save DBZ earlier, that DBZ has no place being in a cartoon survivor (considering that the word cartoon usually applies to western animation). When and if the 90's anime survivor thread is made, then DBZ fans will have every right to support it.

Also, Rugrats was really cool to watch, but when it comes down to the battle of Nickelodeon shows, Hey Arnold! has much more depth. Some episodes may have flown over my head as a kid, but even then some of the episodes had me entranced in stories that were just so outside of that canonical cartoon norm.

If The Simpsons gets snipped by a handful of people with nothing better to do next round, I can easily see a few people leaving the thread permanently.

I didn't really watch Simpsons as a kid. I was too busy watching CN or Nick to tune into Fox. I didn't even see Family Guy until Adult Swim aired it.

All I know is, if The Simpsons is like how the movie was. Then I definitely won't be voting it off... yet.

all the crap leading up to it is why i don't get it. 42 pizzas, 6 no crust. is it a reference to something? is it supposed to be the delivery? the idea that pizza wouldn't come with crust? why do they hold on his face so long?

and 'do you have any requests' just falls flat, but wait! they follow it up with a little song to hang on the joke some more.

i just... i don't get it. it felt like it was a show throwing everything at the wall and trying to see what stuck. it wound up being really hit and miss and annoying for me to watch.

That's exactly why I didn't enjoy it as a kid, most of the jokes require to much thought to get them. The joke about the pizza's was that there was 6 people in the room, and he ordered 6 without crust. That's all I got from it.

I really didn't get that part either, except that he ordered it for 6 people with no crust.

if you like the movie, i highly recommend tracking down seasons 3-8. if you like those, 1-2 and 9-10 are also very good.

2 is probably my favorite season, but it's very different from the rest of the show. 1 is very different too.

a lot of the show felt like it knew it was clever. more than being confident in its jokes, it felt to me like writers thought they were hot shit. yakko's 'good night, folks!' might have been funny once, but it happens so much it's like they're calling attention to the joke and applauding themselves.

Undoubtedly The Simpsons would and should win this, seasons 3-8 are the best television ever produced. But honestly it shouldn't even be included in this contest as it is so different from everything else considered.

I agree with this. I love The Simpsons but.....

Not my #1 for this.

What's the read in the room?

What should I look to save or kill off?

rugrats is out. batman beyond seems to be next.

you can only save once in the next seven rounds so make it count.

edit: actually if it's counted the way i think it'll be going down, it's much much much closer than i thought. batman seems to be the safest out of the three contended shows.

Kill: Hey! Arnold
Kill: Dexter's Laboratory

Top ten feels generous for these two, so it's the end of the line for them. Don't worry, I have a couple others in my sight for tomorrow.

so.

let's talk about dexter's lab.

i think it stands out because early cartoon network was pretty rough. bad? no... not really. cow & chicken, 2 stupid dogs, and johnny bravo weren't bad shows. they were just kind of there. dexter's lab was a lot more accessible for following the wile e coyote formula for a lot of episodes and having a 1950s-sitcom family setting. it was easily the best of those early cartoon network shows.

there are a couple shows that are being target right now, and i agree with most of them. rugrats has only a few good seasons in the 90s. batman beyond is fairly redundant with another batman show. dbz is probably the worst show, despite being culturally significant.

as for the rest? i can't think of what dexter's lab does better. it doesn't mess with tropes as playfully as the powerpuff girls. the action isn't as good either. the childhood elements are done better in hey arnold, and the innuendo is more prevalent and less creepy in rocko's modern life. the non-dexter's shorts are outclassed by the ones in animaniacs, and the slapstick isn't as good as it is in the simpsons. at best, it seems like a jack of all trades. it coasted to the top ten by not doing any one thing particularly wrong, but it doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well either.

oh yes. definitely. francesca smith did a great job too. the screaming just cracks me up every time.
There were not enough episodes dedicated to her. Arnold isn't a bad main, but he has few flaws. Most episodes he's helping other people with their problems or responding toward attacks on him. Rarely did he slip up.

season one shows more of his flaws. as time goes on, the show actually focuses on him less.

above all else, arnold's an idealist. in arnold's christmas, he thinks he can deliver a miracle (which is a bit of hubris on his part, attributing it to christmas). then, when things don't work out like he wanted, he basically decides there's no such things as christmas miracles. it kills a part of his worldview.

in stoop kid, he's so hellbent on helping stoop kid, he never questions if it's really a good thing. in the end he teaches him how to deal with his agoraphobia, but he winds up creating a more dangerous bully than before.

in season one, he's hopelessly infatuated with ruth, who is pretty shallow. i think if he hadn't met 'cecille', he would have left dinner on valentine's disillusioned with love. in seasons 3 and 4, his relationship with lila is showcased again and again, and he keeps getting rejected no matter what he tries, thinking he might be able to change her mind if he treats her a certain way or acts a certain way around her. sometimes it leaves him melancholic. other times it gets him angry (like arnold's weird cousin).

the other flaw is that he... sort of has a temper. it's not explosive, but it shows up fairly often. at the end of 'the list', he's pissed because not only was he not able to get everything on the list done, but it all went horribly wrong to boot. he retaliates against helga and spills paint on her after she got it on him. he tries to get oskar and susie back together just so he can get oskar out of his place (and berates oskar when it doesn't work out). in 'mugged', he attacks someone when all they were looking for was the bus stop.

he kind of reminds me of aang from avatar: the last airbender, except more low-key.

I'm doing it!

Save: Rugrats

I honestly can't think of another place where I'd care to attempt to adjust the ordering more.

PPG, Dexter, DBZ will fall where they will. This is probably the last chance for Rugrats.

you should just put that in your post so it's easier on theabsolution.

Kill: Hey Arnold! - Never liked this show. Nothing about appealed to me.
Kill: Rugrats - Congrats on making it to the top ten, Rugrats. Rest now, you weary baby heroes.
