Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

Those screens above more look like a video thing rather than a game thing. I don't know the technical terms for it, but as I record and edit and render gameplay a lot for a YouTube channel (I am, in fact, editing a video right now), that looks like something that sometimes happens when you record and render gameplay, which is a way to prevent failed frames in capture and rendering devices. Sometimes a frame or something is missed and in turn, either in the recording or the render, the video will have 'cheat' frames like that to fill in the gap.

That definitely looks like frame blending applied in video software. I think some versions of Sony Vegas applies that to videos by default.

Anyway, as with the weird brightness and colour filters on some of the screenshots, I'm gonna say there's someone working on this who isn't very good at handling screenshots and footage.

The PC ports of those HAVE to come to Steam, as they are already done and only need the FF7/8 treatment.

Actually this might be a chance for Capcom to finally release the Windows XP version of RE2 outside Japan. It's supposedly the definitive version of the game.

I might be totally full of shit but I vaguely remember some kind of blur filter being present in the cinematics when I played it back in the day on PS2. I feel like that was fairly common for games of the time.

Can't remember how the existing HD port looks in that regard.

This is my conclusion as well. The video being 59.94 fps instead of 60 further points to that.

You may not be full of shit, I didn't play the PS2 version, but those were captured videos. I can say they're not like that on the Gamecube or Wii however.

So yeah, that's the unpatched version of the original RE4 PC port from 2007 done by SourceNext. It came prepatched in other regions, so only Asia and Europe got to see this beautiful version. After Ultimate HD was announced I decided to play through this version again for the heck of it.

It is really baffling anyone thought this was an acceptable state to release something in, but I'm kinda glad they did because it's funny to go back to and compare this against with other versions.

The brightened to hell FMVs to match the super bright graphics (due to the missing lighting) was hilarious as well.

It's like they said "Waiiiiiit a minute! If they see the FMVs showing proper lighting they will realize we have screwed up the lighting of the game! We are going to trick them by making those super bright as well!! Then they won't be able to tell!"

That shot was altered by Capcom for some reason. The actual game is not that bright.

I know, I just chose that because it's similar to one of the PC screenshots I took.

Yeah. There's other stupid decisions they made with the PC port too. Despite the game always forcing 16:9 through letterbox you can't choose any 16:9 resolutions, only 4:3, 5:4 and 16:10 resolutions are available. And there's no button prompts beyond generic numbers making QTEs a nightmare for anyone who's not already familiar with the game.

How can you say the GC version is best, when this hasn't been released and the wii, 360, and ps3 versions are already better? ;P

Just assuming, and trying to justify not buying it yet again. :P I played the Wii version, and while it was nice to play the Ada stuff, I had no attachment to it. I really love the GC control scheme.

If we end up getting ports of the classic RE titles to Steam, they better not use the gimped version of Resident Evil 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kcF7E69C6Q
vs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Eo9YIFGYQ

I don't think so, as the PC version was based on the original version. Also, there was a version on PC with uncut/color intro.

Edit: They should really start labeling whether games come in stereo/5.1/7.1 audio over on Steam. I want to know if this has the dolby prologic II encoded audio.

You can play the wii version with the gamecube controller + ps2 extras.

Are you guys going to play with the default control scheme? I'm guessing it'll be RT + A to shoot, yadda yadda yadda. I plan to remap it to LT to aim, RT to shoot, LB to knife, etc. On emulators, I had RB bound to aim as well so QTEs were easier (L + R = LB + RB = knife + aim), but I don't think they'll let you bind an action to two different controller buttons in this version.

Those are so bad I literally feel sad looking at them. Like not even joking. I feel sad looking at those screenshots.

The Sourcenext release? That's pretty much the best version of the game. If I remember correctly it has the Nightmare/Hard difficulty, the art/model viewer, door skip ability, all three bonus games unlocked from the get-go, and the highest quality backgrounds and FMVs.

It is, however, lacking the cut-scene skip option from the Gamecube version, and the N64 version's randomiser, costumes, and EX Files, along with the hunter cameo in the experiment room. It's also missing the Dreamcast VMU display for obvious reasons, although I have seen someone playing on PC with a substitute that displays the number of saves, FASs and kills in addition to health.

Sectus....do you suppose there will be a mod to support two player coop for Mercs? How easy or difficult would that be?

Also how's your RE6 trainer coming along?

It's probably technically possible, but I don't think it'll happen. People have done crazy projects where they've added multiplayer to games which didn't have it, but it's an absurd amount of work. RE4 would especially have a big problem with how often it pauses the game.

My trainer is getting progress. I've spent a lot of time trying to add features I can't get working right (I spent a ton of time trying to get 6 player in story mode working, and I've put that on hold for now even though I had it sort of working) and that demotivated me a little, but I'm making it more stable and adding some new features. I'm hoping I can do a proper release in some days. You can follow me on youtube or the mod forums to see when I release it.

Still can't fathom that we had to deal with the inital PC port for so long. I shudder at the thought that many out there seriously believe you could just take the completely botched PC port from Sourcenext, throw some texture mods at it and it will look better than the new version we're getting, dismissing that it was the inferior version in every way.
I've seen a few people with that mindset who don't know better.

So glad we get this new port.

Hold on a second! These screens were taken with the highest graphic settings right? Because god damn, I had no idea just how shitty that og PC version looks.

Hold on a second! These screens were taken with the highest graphic settings right? Because god damn, I had no idea just how shitty that og PC version looks.

Besides choosing resolution, the original PC port had no graphics settings.

I should emphasize this is the unpatched version of the game. They fixed the missing lighting and shading in a patch. But it's still baffling they thought it was okay to release a game in this state.

You guys weren't kidding. That 60 FPS trailer is truly something wondrous. I don't even know what to compare it to. Its like seeing an old friend but for the first time. Like after corrective eye surgery, or something. . .

I would play Classic Camera version any day of the week. That looks amazing.

Personally I always found the limited control scheme and limited vision thanks to the fixed camera was the biggest source of the tension in classic RE.

You turn a corner, something comes out you are like "Oh S*!*)!, gotta turn around, crap how do I turn around and run away quick, oh jeez he's getting closer. I don't wanna turn into a zombie! Hrnnnnnnnnggg"

The classic games had auto aim. If you were facing an enemy it was impossible to miss the shot. Now it would be much harder and possible frustrating.

RU or ROW? Might be interested, since I'm not sure what kind of key I would be getting through Gamefly. Did Gamefly(.co.uk) ever send out country specific keys (DE) that we know of, or should I get a EU/UK/ROW key from them?

RU but it's not region-locked. It should be a little cheaper as $20 typically translates to 399 Russiabucks, but Capcom settled on 499, and to be absolutely clear I wouldn't profit from helping people out with the game.
