Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

So, speaking of Kid Icarus, I haven't played it because I don't like rail shooters at all. But I know there are some ground segments that look fun. So I want to know, how much of the game is made up of that verses the air combat?

Also, how fun is the multiplayer? Does it get old fast?

Yeah, if Palutena gets in, that will be it I'm sure.

The Air to Ground ratio is 50/50 split.
Air sections don't go past 5 minutes for the most part (as Palutena will tell you on like the first mission I believe).

Multiplayer is awesome, although now it may take a bit to get ahead. People have been perfecting weapons on there since launch :P

Don't expect a newcomer in anything but a Nintendo Direct.

I've been saying this for a while. Haha (Long before Rosalina).

That said, there is anticipation of one this week, right? Or at least something before the investors meeting so that nothing unannounced is revealed in the investor meeting?

What happened last year?

Deep down, you all know you want Henry.

Yes, I do.

nothing to do with smash bros will happen

Oh wow, it only just occurred to me that we've had character reveals in every big international Nintendo Direct since the E3 Direct.

Luigi - Aug 7th
Sonic - Oct 1st
Rosalina & Luma - Dec 18th

I don't know why I didn't realize this earlier even though I knew that we could expect some sort of reveal regarding Smash in a big Direct.

YOU'RE TOO SLOW

I didn't catch it until the Rosalina reveal.

As long as there is no grand Nintendo Direct, no, nothing to do with Smash Bros will happen.

The moment (We'll know by Monday/Tuesday if even) they announce a big Wii U direct(not a mini/3DS focused one), anything can happen.

I wouldn't be so sure of anything. If there's no direct, then of course there won't be a reveal at an investor meeting. But we'll probably see something in the next "big" direct; whether its this week or some other time is a different question.

I think Luigi and Sonic were special exceptions haha IF snake comes back, he'll probably be in a Direct reveal as well.

Luigi was in a "Year of Luigi" themed Direct right? And Sonic had a special announcement montage video because of Sonic Lost World.

Other than those, I personally only see Newcomer reveals in future Directs, not Veteran reveals.

I just hope that as we get closer to the launch date, the Nintendo Directs focusing on an aspect of Smash will show more continuous gameplay footage. The ledge grab trumping still rings out in my head as the best new bit of info we've gotten since the developer direct around last E3. I'd love to see what else is different mechanically.

We might get a trailer of two made mainly out of gameplay footage in the month or two preceding launch.

And of course the probable Smash Direct.

You know what's going to be hard? Picking the Megaman music for the game. There are so many good tracks, it's going to be hard to pack them all in. This is even worse if you're counting the spin-off series like X and Battle Network, or spin-off games like Battle and Chase and the GB series.

Tornado Man to represent Megaman 9 =D

LINK NOW

So I started playing Kid Icarus: Uprising two days ago. I made it to Chapter 21 so far.

WOW

I knew the game was going to be good, and have a nice story, BUT MAN ARE THE CHARACTERS SOOOOOO GOOOOOD! I cant remember the last time I liked every single cahracter in a game. The dialogue!! <3

I can see why people want Palutena for Smash. Then again I can see why people want Hades and Viridi too.

Viridi is really awesome btw.....o.o
The rep will actually be Pyrrhon
Honestly, my KI priorities go (assuming all are possibilities)

Pit > Palutena > Dark Pit > Medusa > Viridi > Hades > Magnus

I'd rather Medusa be an AT and Hades be a boss.

For some reason I think Dark Lord Gaol would make for a good boss fight.
But I have Hades playable as a priority, because pretty palutena is so boring in comparison.

Why do you guys assume that Nintendo history is a major part of who gets in and who doesn't?

It's basically based off of a whim, and low key popularity. Whoever warrants a unique and fun movepool, they'll be in. Sonic was last minute, but got in due to sheer popularity and fan feedback.

If Sakurai thinks someone as obscure as Katarina from Fire Emblem makes for a fun character, then she'll be in.

If he really likes someone but can't formulate a moveset in his time frame, then they're assist trophies or cameos.

The Ice Climbers were chosen based on their unique twin concept. If it really were based on history, there are a ton of better games with better sales to choose from.

This dude is fickle as hell and the only way we'd be able to get a good idea of a newcomer is if we think outside the box and see if said character offers something new and exciting.

He was supposed to be in the original Smash?

I meant Brawl, not Smash Bros 64. lol Sonic wasn't third party at the time

Sega is Sega, they've been that way for years. It doesn't cover up for the fact that Sonic was a rushed addition to the roster.

I didn't say he wasn't rushed. I was saying that Sonic wasn't suddenly decided on a whim.

If Sakurai thinks someone as obscure as Katarina from Fire Emblem makes for a fun character, then she'll be in.
Who's Katarina and if she's really obscure then why would Sakurai pick her over anyone other well known FE character? Not against her inclusion (since once again I don't know who it is) but it's far more likely Sakurai is gonna pick a known character from the same game before picking a really obscure one.

That's only half right. History is why the Ice Climbers got in. Sakurai wanted to include a classic NES character, and out of all the options, the Ice Climbers had the most to offer from a gameplay standpoint. They were specifically included on the basis of representing the NES, though.

Also, as "obscure" as the Ice Climbers might be, they're still the protagonists of their game. There's no precedent for insignificant tertiary characters like Katrina being playable in Smash Bros.

People have made that argument before and while there is truth to it, to say Nintendo history has nothing to do with it is completely wrong. He places both Nintendo history and gameplay possibilities on equal footing

Katarina actually plays a big role in Fire Emblem: Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū~, being an anti-hero and Marth's planned assassin throughout the game. I chose the word obscure because the game has never been released in the West, thus being only known to the Japanese community and fans of FE.

It's the most recent Fire Emblem bar Awakening and it's an amazing remake of the original Mystery of the Emblem. I'd give anything to have it or Thracia 776/Genealogy remade or ported onto the eShop.

I'm not saying that history isn't important, but it shouldn't be the threshold for every "probable" inclusion. Game design usually stems off an epiphany or an idea that a developer finds interesting. If the team likes it, it'd get pushed for and several other reasons such as wanting a certain representative or cameo after.

Unlike other developers and publishers, Nintendo pushes their developers for creativity and fun once the initial idea is approved of. We see this with Retro Games effectively becoming second party for Nintendo after DKC: Tropical Freeze. For most Nintendo games, time isn't an issue.

.

Not to be that guy again, but sakurai isn't unquestioned, he has to refer to people to these things, and I dont think he could argue. An older more obscure character over one from a game who is the best selling fire emblem period and one that saved their franchise.

Someone can say no, you know, and he just kind of has to deal with it. It just so happens up till now , most people have been cool with what he does.

Uh, what?

Trying to find the link, in one of the threads there was an interview discussing if I remember correctly, Retro Studios, talking about how they prefer the environment in Nintendo compared to other publishers and how time was not an issue compared to working with Sega or something.

Just an example, she was in Awakening as well.

If Sakurai were to have approval for the next FE character, I'd much rather have a mounted character akin to Sumia/Frederick/Cherche/Cordelia rather than the stark swordsman.
