1990's Cartoon Survivor (Do-Over)

PPG deserves to live on if only for all of its subtle references to other shows.

Like this.

I like this as well:

MLP and PPG have a lot in common - Laua Faust and her husband helped create PPG and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends before they worked on MLP. First season MLP is actually a surprisingly decent, fun show with many likeable characters if you can live with the the fact that everyone's a cartoon ponies.
Then came the dreaded bronies, subsequent seasons weren't quite as good and the show started losing it's appeal

really looking forward to the 00's thread now. Are we going to nominate shows for the next survivor in this thread once we're finished here?

The 00's will be really tough. There are so many shows that most will not have seen a good portion on the list. I think we should devise a better way to vote and make things a little less predictable.

I'm all open to suggestions if you guys have them.

And yes there will be a 00s nomination round in a future round here.

People have told me that it was just a normal show until the demographics changed and it got weird. That's what I meant by my post; In the context of hindsight being 20/20, I'd love to see exactly where (if it was a line in the sand) or how that thing turned.

bronies were pretty much there since day 1. 4chan was ironically checking out the pilot episode, decided that they like it and created their stupid fandom. Around the time season 2 aired the producers and Hasbro started acknowledging them and the quality of the show suffered because of it

Kill: Dexter's Lab
Kill: The Simpsons

Edit :Animaniacs doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, so I vote to kill The Simpsons. Dexter's Lab is one of the weak shows that needs to go.

Tossed my save at Dexter, I'm not about to sit by while Hey, fucking Arnold slides by greats like Rocko/Dexter/PPG if this keep up, I'm simply done, and I'll know there is just a bunch of you with severely questionable taste...

Anyway, post was edited. I might toss a second kill, but it's probably a moot point this round.

That's one thing we can all agree on.

Boo Hoo. I'm still waiting for the reason you hate Hey Arnold.
FYI thinking he wears a kilt isn't a reason.
Besides Dexter, Rocko, and PPG are all in the top ten! What are you on about?

Kill: PPG
Kill: The Simsons

Some creepy obsessions with PPG in this thread. As a kid, I always thought it was a girl show.

It's not just a girls show, but I can see how anyone might think so. It is little girls acting like little girls when they aren't kicking ass.

My high school popularity can diminish retroactively?

Ah, I see. Thought you were being crass and judgmental like that other poster. So is this really true? The show runners specifically changed it to target a niche adult demographic?

That's one thing we can all agree on.

Most posters have already admitted to being in their teens/early 20s when these shows aired so it's less of a "What did I think was awesome as a kid" and more of "What could I justify watching" and PPG is one of those shows like MLP where people convince themselves it's good because it "Defies stereotypes" or some other BS.

It's pretty obvious that people who say that PPG is a girls show haven't actually watched it. It's a kids show. A really, really well written kids show. It's actually very well-balanced at appealing to both genders. I absolutely loved watching it while I was a kid.

(I'm abstaining from voting because I don't think it's fair to get into this so late.)

The number of 7th and 8th grade males I knew that watched PPG would turn your hair white, it would seem. It was not something hidden and talked about with shame, it was on the regular duty roster for cartoon discussion.

Voting for this round is now closed.
It was also brought to my attention by AniHawk(Thanks!) that 5 posts did not follow the rules.
These posts have been disqualified.

  • Hey! Arnold

  • Animaniacs

  • The Simpsons

Note: I had to disqualify several votes this round for not includiong reasons with their votes. Please be mindful of the rules guys.

00s Anime Survivor Suggestions
So guys, I will be including anime in the 00s survivor thread but I need your help. If you want an anime that you liked that aired in the US from 2000 to 2010, Suggest it in this round. I will go through these suggestions and add a decent amount of those shows to the list.
Alright voting is now open for this round. Go ahead and vote!

Kill: The Simpsons Hey Arnold
Kill: Rocko's Modern Life

Simply put, yeah, they really are the odd ones right now.
edit: change my vote, stirring things up.

I'd say...

Kill the Power Puff Girls.
SAVE Hey Arnold

It was a bit one note compared to the east of the shows remaining. I can't bring myself to kill another show here.

Kill : Power Puff Girls
Kill : Rocko's Modern Life
Save : Hey Arnold!

I love all of the remaining shows, but out of the (lets face it) four shows that will be voted against this round - with the exceptions of Animaniacs - I don't feel the others deserve top 5 quite like Hey Arnold! does.

Kill: The Powerpuff Girls
Kill: Animaniacs

either one of these can go at this point. i don't think Powerpuff Girls should have outlasted Dexter, but it's still a pretty good show. it just doesn't really belong in its current company. Animaniacs is very very highly regarded but i think it's kind of overrated.

Your going to put anime in the next cartoon survivor? That seems like it'll be a huge mess. It just seems like it'll be a list of over 100-150 (could be higher because there were a ton of anime released from 00-09) instead of a good 50 like this one. I think anime could have a survivor of its own, and have a ton of shows in it.

I just think of it like, if there was an anime survivor. Would people think of putting "Family Guy" in an anime survivor? Nope, wouldn't even cross anyone's mind.

Also, I don't think it'll be fair if you ask someone to compare KND to Air Gear.

Whether or not you do it, I'll still give a list:
Afro Samurai
Air Gear
Azumanga Daioh
Baccano
Bakugan Battle Brawlers (if you want one anime and one anime only from each person, then this is the one I choose)
Beyblade
Big O
Birdy The Mighty
Black Butler
Black Lagoon
Bleach
Blood+
Bobobo-bobo-bobo
Casshern Sins
Clannad
Code Geass
D.Gray Man
Death Note
Desert Punk
Devil May Cry
Duel Masters
Elfen Lied
Eyeshield 21
Fairy Tail
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Panic
Gintama
Ghost in the Shell
Gurren Lagann
Hamtaro
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (When They Cry)
Kekkaishi
Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple
Lucky Star
MAR
Naruto Shippuden
Negima
Rave Master
School Days
School Rumble
Shakugan No Shana
Shuffle
Spice and Wolf
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Prince of Tennis
To-Love-Ru
Toradora
Welcome To The NHK
Witchblade
Vampire Knight
Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters
Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's
Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Zatch Bell
Zero No Tsukaima (Familiar of Zero)

Not sure if you were asking for lists of good anime from the 00's, or just 1 anime from each person. Regardless, I'll do both just in case.

I think an anime survivor thread, with only anime, is a better idea. but that's just my opinion.

Without a reason this would get disqualified. just sayin'

I've plastered my distaste for this show plenty of times, but I'll go modify my post...

Don't need you or Ani narc'ing me out...

there are very different audiences though.

there's the hardcore fans in america and actual japanese folk who live there and watch anime as it's released

and then there are the people like me who only was exposed to it via toonami/midnight run/adult swim and other american channels.

Kill: Animaniacs

Never liked it. There were some funny bits but the main characters were annoying as hell and show was filled with mediocre songs.

I don't want Arnold to be voted out. I was just giving you a heads up. I'm just too interested in hearing your reason for the Arnold hate.

Kill: Animaniacs
Kill: Rocko

I'd like to see Arnold outlive both and there's only one way for that to happen. A comedy needs to go, and I think these two are at the bottom. I think it's a race for third place now between a couple of shows and I'd sooner see Arnold in our top 3 than either of those two shows.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 posts DQ'd when the spread between 1 and 2 is 3 votes. Mmm.....

Ah, I see. Thought you were being crass and judgmental like that other poster. So is this really true? The show runners specifically changed it to target a niche adult demographic?

That's what I've been lead to believe. I'd love to find out at some point.

kill: animaniacs
kill: rocko

animaniacs was really hit and miss. it felt like baby boomers writing for baby boomers, except they only knew how to recycle the things they heard/listened to growing up. it's not like how adventure time is a show made by gen y'ers for gen y'ers since that show is pretty clearly its own thing and doesn't use humor from completely different decades as a crutch.

I don't want Arnold to be voted out. I was just giving you a heads up. I'm just too interested in hearing your reason for the Arnold hate.

Don't like the style, I just never ever cared for it. No big secret reason, it just never clicked with me..and seeing better shows IMHO of course slip and get cast aside while this shit sits there and sneaks it's way into the top ranks...I just think that sucks :P

Kill: Rocko's modern life. I think its overstayed its welcome

Kill: Power Puff Girls. It was a good monster of the week show, but there are superior shows on the list

Save Hey Arnold: because quality tv deserves to to be appreciated.

Now that I'm done with that list, down to some voting.

Kill: Animaniacs
Kill: Rocko's Modern Life
Save: Hey Arnold

Before Powerpuff Girls go, Animaniacs just has to go first. Like I've stated, Animaniacs comedy was too much for me as a kid.

Rocko was funny, but I didn't like the designs all that much.

Kill: Hey! Arnold - This shit is just trying get politicked to as high a spot as possible by a small group. It's always been overrated. Get it out at this point.
