She's said to be 19 years old, yet when Snow hands her a gun, she points a real gun at her ally and goes "Bang!". Seriously? That gun was fucking loaded. Why did she do that?
Exactly.This didn't really need a thread but I'll bite.
Have you actually finished the game? I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't but there's reasons why her character acts the way she does.
Yep.Because they needed some way to balance out Fang's maturity, since that's her counterpart.
It also may be her way of subconsciously dealing with traumatic events.

Yeah, these. The answer lies somewhere between a general sense of bad writing that you can find throughout the entire game, and the infantilisation of women, which is considered to be cute and endearing in some cultures.

How exactly does it not make sense? Not really, she says so but it still makes no sense.
I would love to play an edit of XIII with Sazh's inner monologue:Well that just sums up FFXIII in general doesn't it. A certain kind of discordance runs through it, where nothing gels with anything, and the game is baffling as a result. All you're asking throughout is "Why? Why? Why?" Even Sazh, the best thing about it, feels like he was plucked from something completely different.

I don't mind the character itself, it's the voice actress that made it insufferable, the interview with her about her role in the game still makes my blood boil
How exactly does it not make sense?
Faux cheerful attitude to hide someone's deep secrets is a common thing. I'm not even defending writing or anything. Whether or not you like Vanille, there's a reason she act's the way she does.
It's almost as if FF13 has terribly written characters.

One of the worst characters and examples of voice acting I've ever encountered, I hated Vanille so very much.
"I feel traumatized so I'm going to act like I'm retarded" doesn't make sense to me. One thing is to appear to be happy like Yuna does in FFX. Vanille is just stupid.
Why are people so offended by hyper-Japanese characters? Other countries on this planet see things differently to us. To the Japanese the cutesy madness is probably accepted. But in the West a little happiness is beaten down."I feel traumatized so I'm going to act like I'm retarded" doesn't make sense to me. One thing is to appear to be happy like Yuna does in FFX. I don't think that's true.
Pretty much. You can find Vanille-like characters in almost any anime.
It's too bad because her monologue voice acting is great.

And it may not make sense to you but there are people who try and block out unfortunate pasts by forcefully acting so cheery.

FFXIII was by the book bad anime
It would be so far removed from any main character before it. Perhaps they would've clothed her differently if she had been the lead.I think it is. It would explain the fact that Fang and Vanille basically become the main characters halfway through.
She never acts retarded. Annoying, sure, but retarded?
The underlying mythos was good. The idea of being marked was good. The underworld concept was good. But the way the story and scenarios were layed out was awful.I think it gives anime and Japanese games a terrible name cause people seem to chalk up, or even defend its awfulness as "cultural differences."
