Why is Vanille (FFXIII) such a childish character?

She's said to be 19 years old, yet when Snow hands her a gun, she points a real gun at her ally and goes "Bang!". Seriously? That gun was fucking loaded. Why did she do that?

Because they needed some way to balance out Fang's maturity, since that's her counterpart.

It also may be her way of subconsciously dealing with traumatic events.

This didn't really need a thread but I'll bite.

Have you actually finished the game? I don't want to spoil anything if you haven't but there's reasons why her character acts the way she does.

The answer lies somewhere between a general sense of bad writing that you can find throughout the entire game, and the infantilisation of women, which is considered to be cute and endearing in some cultures.

There's a storyline reason for it.

She is bottling up the bad events of her life by acting like that.

Yep.

Well that just sums up FFXIII in general doesn't it. A certain kind of discordance runs through it, where nothing gels with anything, and the game is baffling as a result. All you're asking throughout is "Why? Why? Why?" Even Sazh, the best thing about it, feels like he was plucked from something completely different.

Not really, she says so but it still makes no sense.

because Japan

Yeah, these.

And also I think it's gets extra creepy when you put her in an English voice. At least, to be frank, many Japanese women do act in a childish manner, so at least her speech pattern isn't totally alien in her native language. But give her an Aussie accent and it just comes across at the most bizzare grown up Pippi Longstocking who makes orgasm squeal noises as she moves around.

this. The writers had an opprotunity to redeem her character and do something interesting after that reveal.

they didnt.

Did she seem infantile when Shaz pointed a gun at her? no.

Not really, she says so but it still makes no sense.
How exactly does it not make sense?

Faux cheerful attitude to hide someone's deep secrets is a common thing. I'm not even defending writing or anything. Whether or not you like Vanille, there's a reason she act's the way she does.

I would love to play an edit of XIII with Sazh's inner monologue:

"Da fuk is this crazy red haired bitch squealing about?"

I don't mind the character itself, it's the voice actress that made it insufferable, the interview with her about her role in the game still makes my blood boil

Acting goofy and carefree is synonymous with being childish now?

I didn't care for Vanille much but eh. I've known plenty of 19 year olds who were pretty childish. She didnt strike me as such anymore than those people. She has some pretty serious moments herself, and there is justification for her behavior.

Vanille's demeanor is the least of my issues with the story in the game. Her weird accent that comes and goes randomly annoyed the shit out of me though.

I think they were going for playful/quirky/cute. This is the FFXIII team though, so naturally we got creepy waifu with possibly some sort of a developmental disorder.

"I feel traumatized so I'm going to act like I'm retarded" doesn't make sense to me. One thing is to pretend you're happy like Yuna does in FFX. Vanille is just stupid.

To be fair though, her friends are all magic and can be hit with multiple gun shots and not really get hurt. They all have magic shields and stuff.

Japanese game. Really that's it I think. Also video-game writing is more childish than usual.
Just to be clear I don't mean this as a critique or judgement to Japan. I like (some) Japanese games!

FFXIII is not well written, but I think Vanille plays dumb and acts like a baby to hide the guilt she feels over things she has done as a l'cie. In FFXIII proper, she's obviously being extra dumb do to the shit she did that caused Dahj to be marked.

Why are people so offended by hyper-Japanese characters? Other countries on this planet see things differently to us. To the Japanese the cutesy madness is probably accepted. But in the West a little happiness is beaten down.

And it may not make sense to you but there are people who try and block out unfortunate pasts by forcefully acting so cheery.

I don't think that's true.

A character that is annoying for ~40+ hours doesn't suddenly get "un"annoying in retrospect when you hear the reason why she is annoying. Just saying.

It's too bad because her monologue voice acting is great.

She didn't give a rats ass about the game or the role
described it as some side job that her agent asked her to do, mocked the japanese voice acting and showed zero interest in the game or series (that she hadn't even heard of before)

whoever approved her at SE for the localisation needs to be fired

the whole cutscene in the game where they explain sazh' story is so cringeworthy because you have one actor trying hard and doing a good job and the other taking a shit on his efforts by proxy

actually she narrates her first impressions of snow as she does that and it clearly explains on the spot that she was acting.

what more of an instantaneous explanation do you need to understand that ?

I don't think that's true.

I think it is. It would explain the fact that Fang and Vanille basically become the main characters halfway through.

It would be so far removed from any main character before it. Perhaps they would've clothed her differently if she had been the lead.

Vanille is my most hated character in the series. And that's saying something with both Lightning and Snow in the same game.
She sounds like she's being boned every time she fucking moves..

Do you judge every person because of one sentence?

And she is a very loveable and cute person so yes? Why is chlidish a bad thing?

She never acts retarded. Annoying, sure, but retarded?

I don't remember exactly when this happened but I remember her acting like she was literally 3 years old in the way she moves/talks. To me that's being retarded when you consider her age.

I think it gives anime and Japanese games a terrible name cause people seem to chalk up, or even defend its awfulness as "cultural differences."
The underlying mythos was good. The idea of being marked was good. The underworld concept was good. But the way the story and scenarios were layed out was awful.
