I guess in the west it was similar around the 60sThe Japanese stereotype of women acting like children is highly sexist when you think about it.
you managed to watch spoony's 4-hour insufferable, obnoxious review but you couldn't get through the first half hour of the game ?
I don't even....
Rikku too. It's the voiceacting what turn you down guys. Selphie and Yuffie were equally or even more childish and they dont receive a fraction of the hate.
I have no problems with either tho
Here we go...Final Fantasy was so much better when the characters didn't talk.
Since the game was 100% male written, animated, and directed, I'd say it was a Japanese male version of Japanese femininity. And given the fact that Japanese society is borderline misogynistic* Vanille becomes a bit more understandable, as does the bafflement of Western audiences wrt the character. I wonder how she was received by Japanese female players.
*World Economic Forum global rankings puts Japan at 105 out of 135 countries for economic participation/opportunity, educational attainment, and Political Empowerment in their gender gap index and For context here are the countries clustered around Japan:
It's about women.how could you possibly derive that this ECONOMIC info you provided is a direct result of MISOGYNY?

One better: he/she didn't play it.Because OP never reads the lines of the game. She was just pretending.
It's an RPG for god's sake. Just read.
Was supposed to be a RTTP thread, because my first playthrough years ago left me so disappointed that I did not finish the game, as it turns out to be so god awful. But I did spoil myself about the rough story of the game and the ending.
If you don't like Auto-Battle, don't use it. It's a choice. It's not that hard of a problem to fix.mind numbing auto-battle

I found Snows shounen hero crap to be much more grating.
Luckily that also doesn't stay around for very much of the game. There's a nice scene between him and Hope where.Snow's hero complex comes crashing down
I never had a problem with her nor Hope. I can understand not liking Vanille because she's an anime stereotype, but it actually baffles me to see so much Hope hate.
"Geez, this kid is so whiny. Can you believe that he saw his mom die and he won't shut up about it? Man, so annoying!"
Well thats alright then because they kindly gave us the option of dual audio. Here we go...
X (in Japanese) was good.
Acting cutesy is a common Japanese thing.
The problem with Hope was his obnoxious reasoning for hating Snow. He saw what happened and yet blames Snow for everything.I never had a problem with her nor Hope. I can understand not liking Vanille because she's an anime stereotype, but it actually baffles me to see so much Hope hate.

Its like people in this thread didnt even play the game.
YES she is annoying as hell like most of the games cast, but there is a reason.

Seriously. I may agree with a majority of the points he raises, but he's just as annoying to listen to as Tidus.you managed to watch spoony's 4-hour insufferable, obnoxious review but you couldn't get through the first half hour of the game ?

Yes. She pretty much exists solely as a fan service character. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. She was ridiculously over-sexualised too. Isn't her eidolon an enormous phallic gun thing that she straddles while making sex noises?
The counter argument is also valid. Who cares if she has a reason. DON'T make her the way she is, and DON'T give her the reasons behind her attitude. It's like Cloud in AC again. Sure he has a reason to be all depressed and moody, a perfectly valid one at it, but he doesn't NEED to be that way.
Same with Vanille here. Why go through the hassles to give the character such a shitty persona and then say "Ohhhh because she has a troubled past and she acts like this intentionally". I would rather them make a character as bland as Edea of Bravely Default or Aerith of FFVII or Dagger of FFIX than making players sit through badly written dialogue lines out of a character who then has a convenient excuse to be such as an annoying character and us players are supposed to roll with it.

I can not creatively imagine how this could possibly ever happen or ever work... or how FF XIII-2 and XIII-3 would've turned out if this was the case.
I guess you could have a weak main character surrounded by awesome supports, in which it would then play like an RPG because you are commanding the powerful characters that decide the battle, while Lightning plays the typical mystery OP archetype from animes...

OP...have you never watched anime before in your life? Cuz you'll find the answer to vanille's characterization there.
I also never saw Vanille as a fanservice character, and her Eidolin is a MagiTank.

Yeah, I finished it in like 4 days, I actually really enjoyed it to be honest.I guess you could see it that way if you're trying to.
I also think you can interpret Snow's battle noises as him taking it up the rear, but it's all in the ear of the beholder I suppose.
Out of curiosity, have you played the game?
Ehh, Mayuri is more of the innocent/cutesy type, while Vanille was clearly very sexualized. What are some examples? Only one i can think of is Mayuri from Steins;Gate.
OP...have you never watched anime before in your life? Cuz you'll find the answer to vanille's characterization there.
Same except the yuffie/selphie part. Didn't like them either in all honesty. Though ive never been much of a fan of the archetype anyway. They were likeable characters. Vanille is just annoying. Also, stupid.
I know about her facade. She's still a terrible person.
And I liked XIII, she's just the only person I couldn't stand. I even liked Hope and Snow more than her.
Yeah her attitude was bad. IIRC her view of Fang and Vanille was really uncomfortable too. I don't expect everyone to view them as lesbians but at the very least Fang's voice actress semi acknowledged the relationship positively whereas Vanille's voice actress had a slight homophobic tone. I could be wrong, I'll have to find the interview.
Acting cutesy is a common Japanese thing.
I just... can't muster the strength to talk about 13 anymore. Can I PLEASE have FF15 now???
You could just not talk about it.I just... can't muster the strength to talk about 13 anymore. Can I PLEASE have FF15 now???
