Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Damn Lucario has gotten a lot more attention than usual veterans. Everyone's tryin' to put him down, I wanted him in Brawl badly back when I was 16 and when he got confirmed it didn't do much for him for some reason. I'm glad Sakurai put him in over Mewtwo though mainly because there's too much Gen Wun repping in Pokémon. Of course Mewtwo could always come back away and if secret characters are still a thing I'd love to see Mewtwo as one.
I fully expect Mewtwo to return and every Brawl character to return as I've thought for a while. With that said given the meltdowns and crying I wouldn't mind pokemon from newer gens making it in. I agree that Smash over represent gen wunners.

You do damage and get rewarded with the potential to do more damage. If a Lucario powers up with low percentage they will be harder to kill without taking significant damage, but if they are strong at a high percentage it gives other players more of a chance. This would probably be most annoying in FFA if Lucario targets weaker players or keeps a distance.

I'm basing this off the idea that Lucario is a good character that can get even stronger, rather than a weak character that can get good.

Comeback mechanics? As far as I can remember, Lucario is the only character with such a feature.

Well, there is also the "die too many times and get a free Final Smash even if they are turned off" thing, but that's never seen in tournament play.

Yeah, we really should keep responses to one thread, but my point still stands. I think it's also foolish to think that a character will suck (or be great) when we've seen so little about the game and its mechanics.

also not in tournament play, but item spawns are supposed to favor the loser
and while not explicitly "comeback mechanics", the general pace of the game, as well as the abomination known as tripping, is clearly a (very poor) attempt to even the scales

and I think it's safe to assume Link will suck again

If a sufficiently skilled player can get a good head start it gradually becomes more and more dangerous to attack him since his attacks continually build in power. It's either going to turn into a kitefest or bloody murder.

that's why Project M's idea is so great, he doesn't actually get stronger but builds up meter ;)

lol, I don't know why I said it could be an assist trophy even though I knew about the fact the Yellow Devil was in the background.

Anyways, some people thought it could be a co-op boss mode.

Unless they now made it possible for more than 2 people to do boss mode, it is pretty much confirmed as a stage hazard.

Well, if we're going by in-game mechanics, without assuming any "cheats" for the screenshots, the only place where you could get Mario using his jump attack and having no effect on others at that range would be in some kind of co-op mode. And team battle would change the colors of the team members to a single one, so Mario wouldn't have his default outfit there. So, it still could be some co-op boss battle.

After seeing Project M Lucario, i'm inclined to disagree. The damage boost i'm envisioning isn't "that" significant.

Making a Lucario a good character at base and keeping the Aura mechanic is a really bad idea, since the Lucario player would be the only character in the game who is significantly rewarded by *nothing.*

Ideally, the damage boost would be temporary or it would be balanced in a way that's not too significant.

What is he even doing in this shot?
It's Extremespeed, his Up-Special.

And yeah the Aura mechanic is pretty badly implemented in Brawl. I get that it's supposed to be a "comeback mechanic", but it doesn't work well when only one character in the roster has it, and... doesn't work tremendously well for Smash Bros. even then.

Plus it just makes no sense for Lucario's character. No Pokemon media portrays Aura as some kind of "limit breaker" that gets stronger when the Pokemon takes damage. PM's version of Lucario's Aura makes a lot more sense mechanically, and it's more intuitive to suggest that the more damage Lucario causes with Aura the more powerful it becomes, whether that's through a super meter or simply increasing his strength.

Sakurai's version of Aura isn't the worst mechanic in the world, but it's not really a very good one, either. Too bad he only seems to be interested in changing Bowser and not any other veterans, haha.

The reactions to Lucario make my head hurt. His presence doesn't deconfirm Mewtwo and I have no idea why anyone thinks it does. The only kinds of things that would deconfirm Mewtwo himself would be if he showed up in the game in a non-playable role (Ex: Pokeball summon) or if Sakurai just outright said he isn't in the game.

I'm cool with his return, and don't see that this disconfirms Mewtwo in any sense. There's totally room for both. Hell, there's room for a rivalry between the two of them.

It is kinda weird that he has "dog nose" texture all over his body...
I dunno, dog pawpads tend to be the same texture (albeit a lot drier, since dog noses are often quite wet), and Lucario doesn't really have fur on his paws at all, so... (Although he still has pawpads in spite of that, oddly. I'm overthinking this.)

Man the CGI trailer for Shulk reveal is going to be fucking epic, my god.
Scene: atop a tall castle, centered in a vast lake of lava. "Engage the Enemy" is playing. Mario is fighting Bowser, while Peach, tied up, looks onward helplessly. It's a close battle, but it looks like the fight is really getting to Mario; he's not down for the count, but he's visibly panting and sweating.

Suddenly, a white flash. Everything is bathed in a white light, and it almost looks like one is viewing the fight through a thin, shimmering waterfall.

Oblivious to what's happening, both fighters continue. Mario rushes toward Bowser, hoping this is the time he lands the hit that will turn this fight around, and leaps in the air to smack his fist into the overgrown turtle's face.

Alas, Bowser sees this coming, and counters with a devastating swipe of his clawed hand directly into Mario's chest. The blow is so hard, Mario is sent flying off of the castle walls. Peach screams Mario's name in abject horror, as Bowser begins laughing evilly.

Mario is limp as he falls through the air, but still very much conscious; his pupils constrict and his jaw drops as he faces his certain fiery death in a lava pool come flying directly towards his head, very, very quickly. From first-person, the lava comes closer and closer, as if it were an oncoming truck and the viewer were driving a car down the wrong side of the road. The lava hits...

Then, another white flash. The colors are back to normal, and the shimmering effect is completely gone. Mario is once again atop the castle - tired, but very much not burnt to a crisp by molten rock. He preps to run, putting his plan into action, completely aware that it might fail, but unaware that its failure is now ultimately predestined.

Footsteps. Somebody else is running atop this castle, at top speed. But, the feet do not seem to belong to anyone of the Mario universe...

Mario begins his run. Bowser grins, and prepares to counter Mario's next moves.

The foreigner's feet slide a bit as they round a corner, quickly changing directions.

Mario is about to jump, but suddenly, he hears the loud footsteps of the foreigner, causing him to forget and instead start sliding his feet, in an attempt to stop his built-up momentum directly toward Bowser.

Bowser, nevertheless, pulls his arm back, ready to swat Mario off the roof. Mario's momentum is too much; he's going to be in range of Bowser's arm one way or another. The evil king makes his swing.

His hand hits the flat end of a sword. The foreigner has come to a stop in between Mario and Bowser, and successfully parried the attack. Bowser recoils from the unexpected shock of hitting an object far more solid than a plumber's belly. Mario skids to a stop, unscathed, but looks up in confusion at his unexpected savior.

The foreigner, largely unfazed from the blow they just blocked, quickly orients themselves in an offensive stance, prepared to goad the Koopa king into a fight with a more ready opponent. They speak:

"Dance with me!"

I had a Smash Bros dream last night. It involved a re-reveal of Snake, before shifting to a reveal of Raiden cutting through various characters (no blood of course) while "Rules of Nature" played. It was awesome.

Then I woke up and saw Lucario, which was awesome in its own right. He's the most DBZ-like character that Nintendo has ever had, which is fine with me. Makes him fun.
I've said it before, but I'll say it as many times as it warrants saying: Revengeance tracks have to be in Smash 4. Even if Raiden himself is not. The music is just that good. (Although I suppose Raiden could replace Grey Fox as an Assist Trophy?)

People are expecting Snake? That always seemed to be a one shot deal to me. I always thought that it was just a marketing ploy by Kojima to enhance hype for Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots.
I doubt it was just a marketing ploy for MGS4; Kojima was begging for Snake's inclusion as early as before Melee came out. Kojima just wants Snake in the roster, period. I doubt he'd turn down another go-around, if offered.

What is he even doing in this shot?

I think people are upset with Lucario because they consider him a "clone" of Mewtwo. And their thought process is that now that Lucario is confirmed Sakurai isn't going to put in Mewtwo because he will be a clone.

Didn't stop him from keeping Falco and then adding Wolf on top of it. Pretty sure Mewtwo and Lucario are even more different from one another than those three already are.

Fucking finally.
Lucario fan?

It's the end of the month

Uh-oh!
I only visit this thread semi-frequently (not much to discuss until they start showing significant new content, I.E. more newcomers), but I've been under the impression all of Afoni's comments are tongue in cheek/all in good fun...? Never took any of his declarations seriously.

I think it's clear that porting brawl characters is fairly easy for sakurai's team, and I feel personally confident saying that every brawl character will be back, barring any hypothetical 3rd party disagreements, such as with Snake.

Rabbit in peace.

But yeah, I don't know why it's Mewtwo vs. Lucario, their movesets are very different, with Lucario being more physical. I guess people are still in the mindset that Lucario replaced Mewtwo.

Afoni...

You'll be missed rabbit.

He will forever remembered in Smash Cycle picture. Dat Rabbit with tear.

Well, You haven't seen him trolling some people two threads ago or something like that. That's when he got his title from.

Lucario's Aura Sphere is similar to Mewtwo's Shadow Ball. That's about it. Since there was leftover Mewtwo data on Brawl's disk, I think Sakurai wants them both in, and now he has a great reason since they also happen to be relevant in XY.

The only reason Mewtwo wasn't in Brawl was cause of time restraints, now that he has a team to help with the game you know damn well he'll get Mewtwo in the game one way or another.

I was kinda fed up with afoni too, I know he was playing around, but it wasn't funny to anyone but him.

Back on topic, Mewtwo will be back, I'm fairly confident that will be the case based on Sakurai's past responses, his acknowledgment of the character's popularity, and Gamefreak's consistent reintroduction of the character into the series/movies/games.

Here's a good example of a character who gets rewarded for attacking.

P4Arena_axeIcon.png

Labrys has a special axe icon above of her Spirit Point (SP) Gauge which changes in level depending on how often you attack (this includes blocked or whiffed attacks) however it will slowly decrease if you don't attack and decreases even more if you get hit or do not attack with a move that swings the axe. The levels are broken down into the following colors with 1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest:

The higher the level of the axe the more damage she does, once you reach her red axe level she is given the following special properties added to her extra damage:

Added Hitstun
All Counter Hits become Fatal Counters

Under Red Axe Labrys also does significant chip damage off her off her normals and SP Skills like Guillotine Axe.

So Labrys is a character that's rewarded for doing damage to a balanced extent. There's an incentive for attacking opponents to gain axe levels, but aggressively attacking an opponent can cost you the match. You can be a bold player who goes for the risky combos for extra damage, or you can disregard trying to max out the Axe level and play conservatively.

Ideally, I would have wanted Lucario's Aura to function like that. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.
