I had a similar thought. Except I was thinking one of them looked like the women who Marty's wife tried to hook Rust up with at the bar. I rewinded it a few times and decided it wasn't, but who knows.

The thing I don't like about the whole maintenance guy theory is that the "tall man" specifically had burns on his face, his chin, I believe. They would have noticed that if the dude had them.

I doubt anything in this show is going to be as obvious as that theory.

No offense to those that buy into it, and I don't think that's the last we've seen on the Maintenance guy...
 
I'm passing the time by binge-watching Downton Abbey.
 
Watched the first two episodes two days ago and I'm totally into it. Have to get by the nudity in the second episode which I just got really annoyed by because it really didn't have to go that far. But whatever it's HBO.
 
No way! I just started S2 last night and it was great. But its not True Detective so I'll have to go write about it in the DA thread.

The sermon/preaching is actually very cool in terms of the language and imagery. I'm an atheist but what he says is remarkably eloquent/beautiful. Writing on this show is absolutely top-notch, enough to make me look into Pizzolato's original works.

Showing nipples during a crucial scene of dude cheating on his wife is going too far??
 
I can see how the nudity might seem gratuitous, but I also think it's important to explicitly show how Marty undermines his own beliefs about family and solidarity with those scenes. Seeing it, rather than having it implied, is more effective in fleshing out his character.

Especially considering
his whole "did she suck your dick" fury
in the next episode.

Heh. It's a worthwhile interview if you get past the intro. He teases the rest of the season - sounds like the pace is picking up now.
What can you reveal about episode four, which is airing on Sunday?

Episode four is the beginning of Act Two. Suddenly, the rhythm of the entire show changes. The slow part is over now. The first three episodes move at a very deliberate, almost funereal cadence, like you’re marching toward something. And what you’re marching toward is that final image in episode three.

Right. Then in episodes four, five, and six, the rhythm is much more varied. They’re like children. I love them all for different reasons. But five for me is like the most special of the children. Then seven and eight are the third act—and the less said about that, the better.

I will say this: if someone likes True Detective after three episodes, I can guarantee we didn’t drop the ball. And if you don’t like it based on the first three episodes, you should stop now. Plenty of other stuff on TV.

I've heard a few complaints that nothing has really happened yet In 3 episodes (which i totally disagree with). It will be interesting seeing the show shift gears but I loved the slow methodical pace.

All the written and video interviews of pizzolatto show he's really intelligent and put a huge amount of effort and thought into these characters and story.
 
Is Pizzolatto attached to write the entire series (as in, beyond this season)?

As great as this season has been (so far), I'm already worried about changing the formula of Fukunaga and Pizzolatto. Fukunaga is an amazing/inspired choice--dude just NAILS haunting atmosphere and psychological drama.

He just got a new deal with HBO, so I'd be shocked if anyone else was involved in the writing. He wants to do it and they want him to work on it.

When you wrote the True Detective pilot, did you know it was the one?

Yeah. I just held onto it until I knew enough and could make it the way I wanted to. I had producers who wanted to buy the format. There is a way you could franchise it. You really could. You could have True FBI, True DA. Like Law & Order, just using the dual interrogation format to tell a story. But I wouldn’t sell it.

So wait, he's saying the title of the show is linked to the storytelling format of the two main characters being interrogated? Interesting if so, especially since the title has been almost universally disregarded, seemingly

Makeup on the show is great.

And I'll be damned if 1995 Rust doesn't make me want to lose weight and start smoking cigarettes. HOW DOES HE LOOK SO COOL
 
In that 15 minute "making of TD" video in the OP, you can see 2002 Rust and Marty too. They've done an amazing job creating three different yet believable looks for the pair at the different stages of their lives.
