PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4/PSP) | February 2014

Introductions in MH kind of suck for people who have played a lot of the series but for a first time player they're pretty much necessary I think. There are a lot more mechanics to go over than in games like Toukiden. And even Toukiden didn't go over the mechanics well enough, I play with a lot of people online who don't know the basics of the mechanics like how purification works etc.

So... just put a "Do you want some Tutorials?" text box when you start the game. It's amazing how many subsystems MH has and how they didn't explain you anything. In Toukiden, even if they don't do the best job in the world explaining stuff, the tutorial missions are short and better done, they give you a little explanation about how purification works (though they don't explain everything) and they have text boxes for Mitamas and other stuff. Probably the game benefits for not having so many things behind the scenes.

Since I liked Toukiden, I might give another try to MH if there is demo on eShop whenever I bought a 3DS. Maybe I'll be surprised, know that I'm probably more convinced about the genre conventions. But that doesn't change the fact that there should be some help for beginners. Even if there is 290h of joy, any game should need you to play for 10h before you even know if you enjoy the game or not. Spelunky (which most people here clasify as a really skill based game) is fun even if you're dying because the learning curve (while brutal) is satisfiying.

Just put a tutorial, teach the basis, put a battle where your options are: using the game mechanics o GTFO and throw the game to the rubish can (which I think already happens). Explanations =/= hand holding.

Meat Chie? Just kidding Rise still the best.

See, we're all on the same page here.

Pff... I'll politely disagree with you two...

Really man? I practically ignored her for 3/4ths of the game. I have to force myself to go on an activity with her, and straight up friendzoned her. No regrets felt. She sounds a bit off in P4G from the last time I played the PS2 version.

2.0 aka full version
I see. Thanks.

if you find a girl who's into martial arts and meat you don't fucking let go of her
Good luck finding a real life version of her. Just kidding don't kill me.

How long before someone posts the Persona Community OT?

Monster Hunter doesn't do hand holding. Like at all. In fact most people would accuse it of the opposite. It does have missions in the first ranks that allow you to get familiar with basic mechanics though, something that I feel Toukiden is lacking. For example a quest that requires you to combine items, or cook meat, carve from enemies etc etc.

The proof is in that most people online don't seem to know exactly how Toukiden works. They don't know they you're not damaging a monster's HP if you aren't attacking broken off parts or it's not in that "purple mode", they don't know that you have to purify parts or else it reclaims them. There's tonnes of stuff like that which isn't explained at all. Literally all they tell you about purification is that you press the R trigger to do it.

The 10 hours you quote of as needing to learn how to play it is ridiculous hyperbole as well. At least it's a bit better than people claiming it takes 20 hours, ridiculous.

I'm pretty much done discussing MH in this thread though, since so many people are set in their ways against it. Whenever I seem to point out something I like about MH people go into offensive lol.

There's already one in the community and it's actually on its fourth iteration already.
Last time this happened it lasted 2 pages and someone (Laughing Banana I believe) snidely posted the Persona OT.
Not when you have alternative of lifetime of free hot springs

The speed with which I dropped Yukiko when Rise came into the scene is absolutely staggering. I had gotten to Yukikos 8th Social Link and by Rise's 3rd Yukiko just sat over there in a corner until it was nearly end game wrap up.

Monthly waifu discussions are a tradition now, like top of the page recommendations and asking when games go on Plus.

I'll strongly agree with Kiriin. They're great games, the battle system is still very fun regardless of how different it is in P2 and Innocent sin.

P3P is more akin to P4G in every single way, whereas P2 deals with more adult characters and P2PSP uses the now overused schoolboy trope. ( I really like P2 Eternal Punishment)

As far as how it looks, I took some shots.

P2 EP

P2 Innocent Sin (PSP Remake)

hmm are both PSP games? and on the US PSN store?

you're finally a full member! hurrah!

I could never catch Stump on Steam to ask him about what seemed to be perma junior status but he was posting in the Steam thread so I PM'd him and he fixed it.

Long overdue but I'm happy it's finally done.

It's really a shame about Dustforce but at least that's $10 I don't have to spend right now.

Hopefully I can watch my spending enough to pickup Danganronpa the day it comes out and not have to wait a few days after when I get paid again.

God! is so hard!! , i get that there is frame rate issues with dustforce but i will eventually get it, same for BitTrip2 and Persona3P . I will eventually get all of them but now i have to decide wich one first, i guess becouse i bought recently Olli Olli would be recommendable to buy dustforce, but bit trip is tempting too and im about to finish Persona 4 so PErsona3P is tempting tooo. Im such a mess regarding this type of choices.

Toss a coin. Regret later if you did not like what you've bought.

If you have a PS3 get Persona 3 FES for that. Going from being able to roam around on P4G to only being able to pick locations from boxes on the screen in P3P isn't a fun thing.

Going from full party control to idiot AI that will screw you over isn't a fun thing either.
For that reason, among others, P3P is what I went with.

Too bad about Dustforce.

I remember it was a surprisingly demanding games on PC as well. My laptop couldn't handle it at all, had to play on my relatively high end (at the time) desktop.

I would recommend bit trip 2. I think it's actually more fun than dustforce

Sorry Flandy I know you generally dislike her but having had a singer ex-girlfriend before she reminds me of her. Why did I two timed her?

wat. Where did you get that impression? Rise is mah waifu

I dont have PS3 thats maybe why i enjoy so much Vita-Ports and Vita-games , everything is new to me on this console. Regarding Persona3P ive already play a little of it on PSP and it is a really cool game even with the exloration parts being cutted off.

Yeah I don't think it loses too much because of the lack of 3D exploration. Some scenes do kind of lose their impact because they're just conveyed through text, but it's not going to ruin the experience for you too much.

As someone that played P3 back on the PS2 it was really fun to play through again in P3P, especially as the FeMC since her Social Links are so much better than the original ones imo.

Can anyone who's played both Persona 4 and DanganRonpa tell me how they compare? Everything I've seen makes them look really similar, and I've enjoyed P4 so much I'm tempted to give it a shot.

The waifu shit that inevitably monopolizes giant chunks of every Persona thread over in gaming is terrible.

They're not that similar - P4 is an RPG, while Danganronpa is a visual novel adventure game.

I have not played Danganronpa yet but I can't imagine there would be much similarity at all beyond being able to level up friendships with people.

I mean Danganronpa is a pure visual novel style game with more in common with stuff like Ace Attorney and 999.

I'm glad someone shares my sentiments. I can't stand the mention of waifu or #teamanything in regards to anything though.

That was I was saying. There is a point between hand holding and explanations.

The proof is in that most people online don't seem to know exactly how Toukiden works. Well, I didn't literally know that attacking the blue parts decreased enemies health. I knew it happened when you entered the purple mode and I knew there was a situation where the enemy is damaged without that state. I always attacked the cursed parts, even when they're broken, so I was unconciously doing it right xD.

The 10 hours you quote of as needing to learn how to play it is ridiculous hyperbole as well. At least it's a bit better than people claiming it takes 20 hours, ridiculous.

Well, 20h is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe 10 is hyperbolic too. But that doesn't change the fact that it needs to be a little bit more friendly for newcomers. As I've said before, putting some explanations doesn't especifically mean hand holding. They can keep the skill based progression, but some help will be good.

I'm pretty much done discussing MH in this thread though, since so many people are set in their ways against it. Whenever I seem to point out something I like about MH people go into offensive lol.

I didn't want to sound harsh, sorry if my words sounded like that. I have just woken up, so that may be the reason my empathy meters were low. It was the reason I posted a little later compared to other posts.

As I've said, I'll give it a try again if I buy a 3DS. I've liked Toukiden, maybe now that I'm not that new to the genre I'll be able to climb the learning curve :)

RalchAC is a real bro

Yup, I know.

And she looks really good in the epilogue :)

Not when you have alternative of lifetime of free hot springs

p4a_yukiko_small_139.png

Choosing her best friend guarantees free hot springs too ;)

So P3FES = 5$ and P2 PS1 = 5$, right? That's like 7 euros...

They may have some visual similarities in menues and such , but gameplay wise those games are completley different. Being Persona4 the perfect modern jrpg with some sim dating features , and Danganronpa an excellent Mystery game ala Phoenix Wright but much more fresh and superior in some aspects like the gameplay.

Definitely not for me, then. Thanks guys.

Nah it's all good, there's just a really resoundingly strong dislike for MH in this thread. If you're trying to get into it I really wouldn't expect to like it from the demo for MH3U, it's a terrible demo. Basically just throws you into two later-game fights with monsters and doesn't tell you anything, the Toukiden demo is definitely much, much better.

Both have teddy bear mascots.
Both are quite lenghty.
Both are about highschool students who got tangled with a person dying.

The difference is Danganronpa's scenario is more messed up than P4G. Everybody is out to kill anybody. You don't use monsters in DR, no Igor, no fusing whatsoever. You are trying to survive till the end here. DR plays like Ace Attorney a bit. In P4G, social links are important. However in DR, I think they are like bonus to the game.

The waifu shit that inevitably monopolizes giant chunks of every Persona thread over in gaming is terrible.
As if Persona is anything but a game to pander to everything the Japanese are portrayed to want. It's because high school is the high point of their life and it coddles the player into easy mode relationships.

I don't know where I was going with that... Persona is all about the waifu. It's not like there's too much else to it other than its tarot card undertones and it's Jungian philosophy overtones.
wat. Where did you get that impression? Rise is mah waifu

Are you me?

It's entirely possible.
