The London Olympics have been great for the area too. The athletes village looks like amazing flats, the stadium is going to be a football ground and development has really spread to surrounding areas. The whole village area around the park, including wesfields shopping centre, are lovely. Remember, this is a piss poor area, seriously run down and in need of development. I really think the Olympics have made a positive difference to locals.

Looks like the locals of Sochi however are being treated with comtempt and disgust, that CNN article on the last page was sickening.
Yeah, that was my point earlier in the thread. While I appreciate the ethos of the Games is to tour the world, I think host cities should be favoured by places that actually need redevelopment and have an existing demand.

There are far too many abandoned former Olympic sites, that the Games are now becoming synonymous with waste and corruption. If that means some countries host more frequently, so be it. Some places just aren't ready to host a world class event (see India, Sochi).

I think the Olympics should just be held in one central location. Build it once and be done with it. Why the Olympics has to go planet hopping every 4 years is beyond me. It would just make everything easier for everyone I think.

The thing that really gets me is that it's the most expensive Olympics ever.

Right? I love the idea of a less fortunate region of the world hosting the Olympics, even of it lacks the funds necessary to match the expectations of those with western sensibilities - but this cost $50 billion. This deserves all the mockery is receives.

exposed wires in a shower? no big deal

That's a grounding wire, not dangerous but quite unsightly. They're everywhere on plumbing in Europe, but are almost always hidden away (like under the sink, sunk into the wall etc).

In this case, can you really be sure that it is a grounding wire?

there was an interesting documentary about "putin´s games" (90mins) on arte recently (this is in german):
http://www.arte.tv/guide/de/045953-000/putins-spiele?autoplay=1

on youtube i only found a shorter version in english (CBC, 67mins):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP1ll3i2U2U

As costs for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia spiral to in excess of $50 billion dollars, Putin's Games goes behind the scenes to investigate why the first Winter Games to be held in a sub-tropical resort have become the most expensive Olympics ever. With extraordinary access to top government officials and wealthy Russian businessmen, the documentary follows the preparations from the early stages, exposing alleged corruption, the sky-rocketing budget and the big winners and losers. Putin’s Games questions the entire Sochi nomination, while revealing the environmental and human costs of constructing a faux “winter” for the upcoming Winter Games. “You’d have to spend a long time searching the map of this huge country to find someplace with no snow,” says Boris Nemtsov, a member of the Russian Opposition Coordination Council. “Putin found it.”
...

Putin’s Games is directed by Alexander Gentelev.

During the production of Putin's Games, the producers were offered 600,000 euros not to show the film anywhere, but they refused. Recently, Russian authorities tried to cancel its only scheduled screening in Russia, but the largest documentary festival in Moscow went ahead with the premiere and had a standing room only crowd.

As a Penguins fan, I do not want Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz going for two weeks living in these conditions.

Funny you should say that because Crosby seems to have no issue with it.

“Pretty similar to Vancouver,” Team Canada star Sidney Crosby casually pointed out Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Not quite that tight, but we had three guys in a room, and I think [Bruins center Patrice] Bergeron was sleeping in a closet. … To house that many athletes in that small a [town], it’s probably what you’re going to see.”

Russian Officials Fire Back at Olympic Critics

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, reflected the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

Lol that an aide pulled him away before anyone could go "wait, there are cameras in the showers?"

What. The. Fuck.

Looks like the government warnings to athletes was spot on, and not just regarding electronics - do not expect any privacy. Anywhere.

So either it's a giant lie to try to divert criticism or they're video taping you in the shower. Great!

thats just an earth wire, still should be behind the wall tho

What's an "earth" wire? Do you mean a ground? Yeah, well, if that's what you mean I never heard of one being connected to exposed plumbing like that. I'm not sure if I'd want to turn on a faucet with an electrical wire attached to it.
