Paul Tassi: Marathon needs to be in the top 5 NPD sales for the year, to be a 'success'

I wonder what Sony's metric for success is for marathon? Certainly not what the author believes, but I wouldn't expect it to be high.

300 out of the 850 employees at Bungie are working on it.

No idea about the budget, but they're not going all-in.
That's what I thought. I do think they are crazy not to launch on Xbox/PC/Sony and they should launch as a FTP with battle passes and micro transactions. Also make the battlepass easy to complete so people do not think they are trying to get you to pay for levels.

That's literally not possible. MH: Wilds will certainly be in Top 5. Obviously Mario Kart World will be as well. Then just consider the other usual suspects like CoD, Madden, NBA2K, College Football, WWE, etc. Marathon can be wildly successful and still not come anywhere close to those aforementioned games.

Can it be argued cancelling the game would be a more successful strategy than selling it? Kind of like it was better to just can Concord asap, then trying to promote and sell the game for years and being laughed at.

Once Concord was shut down and the studio followed later, everyone stopped talking Concord shortly after as it was done. If Concord was still going, people would still have ammo to keep talking about it.

Good. Let it fail. Eventually Sony (and the industry as a whole) will get the fucking picture.

GAAS is a plague and does nothing to benefit the industry outside of siphoning money out of players and giving it to CEOs and share holders.

I didnt know who this guy was until the live chat.

But when he sat there looking miserable, he reminded me of Phil Kessel getting flak from reporters back in the day. He's a Leafs player from 10-15 years ago. Best player on the team, but the team was lousy so he'd get grilled the most.
As long as they were grilling hot dogs I'm sure he was okay with it.

Thats a tall order. How did they even set this target? Was there any indication that Marathon was massively desirable even before the gameplay reveal? This being Bungie's take on a niche genre and with Arc Raiders around the corner, this goal just seems riddiculous.

Could be a combination of things. I think what's likely though is Destiny is slowing down and making less and less money and Sony wants to see a return on their investment and Marathon is really the only chance to do that.

Since when has a live service game NEEDED to have initial showing that strong?

Most games grow over time...some exponentially. Even Fortnite wasn't the behemoth it is until it decided to do battle royale.

That being said, latest headlines and alpha impressions don't bode well for the game. I'm still interested though.

Tassi can fuck off. The game won't sell well if the price tag is 40

They can save themselves by making it F2P and which they won't and they'll fuck themselves. The end

I really don't like the character art of this game. As an example, the character in the thumbnail - the lipstick looks stupid, the eyes look weird just for the sake of being weird, and it's all so overdone (mask, face markings, lipstick all over the place, etc.). Totally subjective, I know, but I find it really unappealing.

Forget game war, console war whatever the name is:

- If a game needs so MUCH sales to be considered a success... there is something VERY wrong with game development. It's just like the TWO HOUR AC Shadow credits.
It's like Square Enix every time they release a Final Fantasy Game. They expect 10 million units.

Thats a very media thing the past 5-10 years. Game companies, TV/movie studios, even stretching it to tech companies making media-ish content like social media are all very similar spending endless budget on people and flare.

They all must have such big bankrolls, no product costs too much to make. And if it flops, there's also more money to do it again. best example I remember is She Hulk cost $225M to make for 9 episodes.

Movies are insane. Just about every superhero movie has a production budget or $150+M to start. Only the really low key ones are $100M to start. Then add marketing too. The company only gets about 50% of movie receipts. So just to break even, a lot of even fringe superhero flicks most people have never heard of needs around $400M-ish in gate receipts to break even. And the really big budget supe movies probably $500M+ to break even.

Starting to seem like they'll be lucky to survive this game.

When I think about how not so long ago, they were using company funds for knitting clubs, cooking classes, etc. until Sony went in and 'restructured' things - then after basically being compelled to actually work and release a game, this is what they came up with. A game that is failing to generate buzz and already mired in conflict (art theft). Yeah, unless things dramatically turn around, I can see things not going so well for Bungie in the future too.

You can tell Sony is lost when their expectations are on par with SquareEnix. And i really hope Sony loses a shitton of money on this, it's the only way they'll be able to wake the fk up.

Not sure what you mean with the platforms, but Marathon will be releasing on PS5, PC and even Xbox.

Just remember that this is the same guy who confidently stated that Sony didn't have the money to buy Bungie right before Sony bought them.

lol I didn't see that, but can believe it for sure. He has a terrible track record along with his multitude of hot takes. Now that I think of it, we haven't seen the 'Sony is poor' narrative too often lately. It died down a lot after the ABK acquisition closed.

Microsoft bought Zenimax for 7.5 billion, a company owning multiple developers with dozens of popular franchises

Sony bought Bungie for 3.5 billion, a single developer that the last decade had only made the just decent Destiny and now the upcoming disaster Marathon. Morons

Tassi is such a Destiny fanboy, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's throwing all these daggers in the hopes that all the negativity causes Marathon to pull a Concord, thus expediting a Destiny 3.

That's my tin foil hat theory and I'm sticking to it. 🤣

Microsoft should be more subtle releasing the hounds, they always come in waves, if they staggered their bullshit agenda maybe it wouldn't be as suspicious.

I mean. Tassi is a tassi but I imagine the internal expectations for Bungies next big game is going to be big.

They hoodwinked Sony out of nearly 4 Billy.

I think Bungue are fucked.
