So what's next on the Xbox chopping block?

Machine Games
Ninja Theory
Double Fine (will be gutted with only Grounded team, like what happened to Rare today)
343

Fable feels like it will be on the chopping block.
that would be crazy considering they basically built a whole new studio inside PG for it and probably spent $250+ million so far. I know it looks like dogshit.

Nintendo practically survive thanks just a single product seems extremely unlikely see sony drops the whole business before them but Nintendo fans are notorious to live in their bubble.

I have no idea. I certainly wouldn't have predicted cancelling a well into development next-gen MMO from the team behind ESO. I get the saving $200 mil in development costs. But the risk is losing billions in revenue over 10-15 years.

It makes sense if you think they want to just plow as much money as possible into a few live service "tentpoles" like COD and ESO and don't want to split their userbase.

This will subside for a year and in 2 years hardware will chopped. The next console / handheld will be their last as a branded Xbox product unless it becomes a major hit

A purely financial decision that doesn't factor in the fact that the studio doesn't have any desire creatively or otherwise to do nothing but churn out DLC for the same game until the end of time. Talent bleed is real, and eventually the studio could become essentially worthless (343i).

yea, agreed on all counts, but it's Microsoft we are talking about. Like Steve Jobs said many years ago, this company has no taste.

I wonder how these people will cope?

Lmao, do these grown up people actually believe that shit? And who the hell would even think about gaming if one struggles to pay rents and afford food? This is" is this real life or a fantasy" on a whole different level lol.

And this is part of why Halo isn't even taken seriously any more! Xbox's greatest franchise too. Very sad and no, not "just" because they have LGBT skins but I still think these little decisions add up to damage the reputation of a series over time. Instead of awesome sci fi military imagery THIS is what the devs want people to see when thinking about Halo...it would be one thing if Halo had just released an amazing game and was kicking ass in terms of popularity but that's definitely not the case.

What a joke

We unironically need toxic men driving the bus on certain franchises.

If MS suits get smart they spin off what little is left of the XBox brand and then Xbox collapses on the weight of its utter incompetence

Matt Booty is utterly terrible at his job. I would place a lot of the failures on his lack of vision and management. Phil is terrible and should have been sacked long ago. He has more cancelled games in his tenure than successfully launched games. Sarah Bond is just a token hire to check a box for MS's progressive appearance in the industry. New management is needed to try to turn things around. I doubt it will happen though because Phil must have something on Nadella that keeps him in an untouchable state.

If we don't see State of Decay 3 in Developers Direct in January, I'll be very worried. I hope UL can deliver.

Same for Fable.

Honestly they should axe 343 entirely and contract Bungie to reboot Halo.
Isn't most of 343 ex Bungie staff? Then you have to factor in how many original people from Bungie that worked on Halo are still there.

I think Halo needs new eyes and new set of developers rather than going back to the same old. It's a risk but sometimes you need to take risks to succeed.

MS have lots of studios with FPS experience. ID software, Machinegames, Treyarch, infinity ward, sledgehammer and Raven.

Just take your pick, why go back to Bungie.

It's not gamepass, because that's the only reason to own an Xbox at the moment. At least for however long they plan on supporting the series s/x.

Fable has been quiet for a while...

But I think MS will keep going for now on what they have. The backlash to this round has been pretty bad for their image.

These are the logical questions to ask-

Who just released a new IP that had mid reviews or performed only OK? I'm 1000% positive Microsoft are evaluating recently released games' performance, releasing them cross platform first to recoup their loses, then shutting that shit down after.

Who is close to releasing a game that looks mid? As soon as those projects ship it's logical for Microsoft to evaluate the strength of engagement/sales and to not ramp up their next projects, especially if the IP is not big enough to be worth it.

Who has a game that is very far out but of high risk (unknown/new IPs, single player, long dev cycles, large staff). I could see these Devs get scaled down and 'redirected' to stronger performing/known IP.

Some obvious guesses for Devs that fit these categories-
-Ninja Theory- They are releasing Hell Blade 2 on PlayStation to either get the most from their investment or evaluating the cross platform viability of Ninja Theory's games. My guess is the game sells poorly (just don't see it doing particularly well) followed by either a scaling back of the dev or an outright closure.

-Compulsion- Just don't think their games are of high enough quality and appeal. Not even sure South of Midnight performed well enough to justify a cross platform release let alone investment in future projects.

-Obsidian- Guessing they don't make it through the year in their current form/size. We might see Avowed released Cross platform to recoup investment but there is no way it performed well enough to warrant further investment in the IP. I can't imagine the new tighter belted x-box approving any vanity artistic projects like Pentiment going forward. And their next game, Out Worlds 2, just doesn't look particularly good (sorry just not seeing it). Their one saving grace is Grounded (Microsoft love those GAAS games), so I'd wager on them being scaled down around that IP or GAAS projects like it.

-Double Fine- Keeper looks awesome to me, but it is clearly of limited mass appeal. I think Tim and Co have a better chance of weathering the storm than those mentioned above just based on pedigree, but they are by no means safe as they mostly make games of smaller scale and with limited sales/appeal. Not the type of big hits x-box seems to be realigning itself toward..
