I saw The Toxic Avenger last night. It must have popped up recently on Sky Movies (UK), but it's not obvious since the list of new films is ordered by date and this was made in 2023. It sat in a vault, unloved and unreleased until last year.

It's completely stupid, but a lot of fun and only 90 minutes. Surprisingly good cast, although Peter Dinklage doesn't actually play the mutated Toxie - it's a woman who once worked on Teletubbies, and I thought she looked a bit like Daniel Craig in the prosthetics. (James Bond never pulled a man's guts out through his arsehole, though.)

Happy Death Day
I watched this with my son (11 yo) last night as he was in the mood for a "horror" movie. This was my daughter's first "horror" movie, too, back in the day.
It's entertaining, funny in parts, and very little gore (PG-13) - good intro for both of my kids. I am surprised the lead actress in this never took off, as she's very talented and stands out quite a bit from the rest of the Hallmark movie-level cast.

Smile(2022)
It's horror/mystery, and I'd rate it 7/10.
I love horror movies, but honeslty it's so hard to find something worthy. Can't say that it was the best one, but for sure a good one

Accepted - 10/10

It's been a long time since I've watched a really good comedy. It's an older one (2006) that somehow went under the radar.

Watched this a few months ago and yes it holds up really well. Seems a bit dated now given modern technology but the premise is solid and the jokes still work.

The Iron Claw

A really strong film but enjoyable might not be the right word. It strikes a great balance between true events and storytelling, with excellent pacing and performances throughout

The casting for the boys felt very believable and Holt McCallany was outstanding. By the end I genuinely hated him, which feels exactly like the point.

It's also beautifully shot. And honestly, every time Jeremy Allen White shows up, he's great. I really need to start The Bear already

It's fair to say I absolutely loved it

Emmanuelle: D

Beautiful female lead with some great cinematography but the plot is bad. There is sexual content but they kind of toned it down. Overall a boring pretentious feminist movie

I rewatched Mulholland Drive for the first time. I hadn't seen it for years and obviously it's a classic, but rewatching it is a new experience when you go into it already knowing the film's structure and the direction it's heading in.

I guess this should be considered a dystopy, even if the scenery isn't all dark and gritty. But when AI has access to everything on the web and acts as judge, jury and executioner, it's pretty dystopian. In here, Chris Pratt plays a detective, who is judged for his wife's murder. He has to prove his innocence in 90 minutes, or he's executed on the spot.

I was quite well sucked in, even forgot to eat my movie candy. The problem with films like these are that once you know what happens, there's not much value to see it again. Maybe this was originally made for streaming (Amazon owning MGM an all that), where films like this fit better. Quite a lot of films like that are getting theater releases lately. Even if they don't get that much attention, I still prefer watching films in theaters than subbing to a service for one film. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

I caught The Last Judgment a.k.a. Il giudizio universale by Vittorio De Sica the other day, I had a great time with it, funny as hell. I just read on Wikipedia that "it was a huge flop, massacred by critics and audiences when it was released" and I think it's a bit of a shame really, the cast is spectacular...

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Just finished this. It was fine overall, nothing that really stood out. The ending didn't fully land for me, I honestly can't tell whether it was a convoluted mess or a clever master plan

Either way, I'd still tune in for another Benoit Blanc mystery if they keep making them

The Secret Agent

Just finished this one. The slowest of burns.

Expecting a traditional thriller or spy film will just lead to disappointment. This is something else altogether. A movie that fully commits to its ideas, letting striking visuals and a daring screenplay carry a deliberately unconventional experience.

I liked it well enough but it ultimately felt a bit routine despite having plenty going for it. The hype raised my expectations too high and it just doesn't compare to the classic American crime thrillers of the '70s and '80s. That said, Wagner Moura has great screen presence and a natural, easy charm

Oh, and the music, my god. It's incredibly well assembled and does a lot of heavy lifting for the mood and tone

The Patriot

After Roland Emmerich did almost exclusively Scifi for all of 1990's, he decided to a very different movie from American Independence War. I watched the Extended cut, which clocks in almost 3 hours of war and loss. Mel Gibson stars, with many familiar faces filling the cast. I could only identify a few of them, but many actors looked very familiar. I generally enjoyed watching this, but if I ever see it again, it will probably be the theatrical cut, which is a bit shorter.

Watched Purple Rain over the weekend. First time seeing it in full. I enjoyed it. Its plot thin but the music and atmosphere is contagious. Price gives an earnest performance and the shots are pretty solid.

Soundtrack is of course legendary

Lots of great actors in this film. I don't think I have ever seen the extended cut.

Mercy

I couldn't look away. It's a propulsive ADHD ride with two good actors. Sort of like those Minority Report investigations. Good cheap Tuesday entertainment.

10,000 B.C.

An Action-adventure film from 2008, this features a clan of mammoth hunters. Some of them are kidnapped by slave traders (including the main character's girlfriend). A group goes after them and meet more friends and find adventure. The films tries to play it straight, but it's made in a way that it feels at least a bit ridiculous. Even if you don't care that mammoths and sabretooth cats were probably extinct by that time, all the humans look and feel too modern. I think it would have worked better if this was set in future and people have somehow regressed back to bronze age. Not that great of a movie.

Make me one of these GIFs for the New Anaconda.......please

or show me the tools.

This.

This thread would be so much fun if everyone knew how to create those GIFs.

I suppose it was done with Photoshop.

Anaconda 2025 - 3/5 -I think it is everything you want out of this type of movie. Fun with action.

The Smashing Machine - Man I really wanted to like this one. I love MMA and have been following it since the Early UFC / Pride days. However,I felt let down after watching it. I kind of see what they wanted to do but it was just... boring. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunts performance were good, but the rest was rough. Ryan Bader's acting was atrocious, and I could not see him as Mark Coleman... just Ryan Bader. Might be a me problem though.

2.5 / 5

I watched Saipan the other night. As a Manchester United fan and one who finds Roy Keane particularly fascinating, this was right in my area of interest.

I've wanted a Keane biopic for years and had imagined all the material it could cover. Instead, this one focuses on a single event. But if you're going to do that, Saipan is the obvious choice for what to cover. I'm a big fan of Steve Coogan and casting him as McCarthy was a great call. I hadn't seen Eanna Hardwicke in anything before, but I thought he did a great job as Keane too. If nothing else, getting "You can stick it up your bollocks." included in a film scene makes it worthwhile.

I also saw Wild At Heart. A film in which Nic Cage's character says he started smoking at four and you believe him. That's how you know it's the good shit.

In Theaters?
Yeah, in 3D, which looks decent but doesn't add much. Tron Ares spoiled me when it comes to floating UI... 3D bodycams and Batman Vision are cool. Also there's a targeting camera with a 3D zoom in reticle in the center, I loved that weird little effect.
Anyway you won't miss much when it comes to streaming.

Greenland 2 - Feel misled because this isn't about Trump getting Greenland.

3/5 - They are not even in Greenland they are in England. But the movie is watchable with some action and a silly plot device.

Casper: A

I remember watching this movie in theaters when I was a kid

Loved it as a kid

Never rewatched since so it's practically a new movie

The CGI aged well, I heard that this movie was the first to have a fully CGI Character in a leading role. It's really impressive what they did in 1995. The practical sets were really good too and I enjoyed how the mansion looked. Really liked the rest of the cast and the story was a lot of fun. Overall a great movie that was very emotional and touching due to the movie dealing with themes of loss

I rewatched Battles Without Honor and Humanity, the first Yakuza Papers film.

I like it better every time I rewatch it, because I more or less remember the many characters and who kills who, so I'm able to appreciate the actual film more while I'm watching it.

I still like Deadly Fight In Hiroshima more, but this first film's absolutely iconic.

Zootopia 2: C

Beautiful looking film with some great animation. But the plot is boring and predicatable. I figured out the twist and the story itself was nothing special

Bugonia

Performances are alright, but I have no clue why it is so highly rated. The script isn't good, dialogue isn't either. Predicted what would happen 10 minutes in. The soundtrack doesn't fit the movie. It is topical, preachy and mean spirited in a Impotent way. It is not scary, not funny, no intrigue, no emotion, just worthless. Can't really rate less than a 5 because it is somewhat competently put together. 5/10
