Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey - July 2026

om2C0Xc.jpeg

Other pics look good to me but this one looks pretty terrible, the souless woman and that ugly kid...

I'd launch a thousand ships to make sure she stayed in Troy.

Which is why they ain't making epic movies about modern day ppl and probably never will.

Dudes back then had questionable morality but they had taste in women. And they welcomed them in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

Some of yall could learn from them

Hard disagree, I seen much prettier black women than Lupita Nyong'o. I'm not sure if it's confirmed she's Helen of Troy but the more I see of this movie, the less I want to watch it even if it's out on streaming

And she's not only reason why I'm not excited. Watching that trailer, all the armor look fake looking too. This whole movie looks bad. But who knows, there's a possiblity I might be wrong. But I doubt it

I never read The Odyssey but isn't the whole cast nationality Greek? Since it's Nolan actually adopting the book, he should have stuck with an all white cast

As for what men find attractive, if all these uggos were able to sell these movies than Hollywood wouldn't be going bankrupt

It's a legendary greek tale for greeks by greeks, he shouldn't touch this story when he clearly doesn't respect it.

Nolan you disgrace, what are you doing, who puts that fucking clown travis scotty in an odyssey film.

If travis scott gave me 1 million I wouldn't take it because I don't want his taint on me.

You can't have an all white cast and be eligible for Oscars.

Technically you can, but realistically you probably wouldn't be allowed to win if you did.
By the Oscars 'rules' you would need substantial POC representation in your crew if the actors were all white. So to do a 17th century irish bio-pic with an all irish cast and crew would, be default, exclude you from oscar consideration unless you aggressively hired non-irish crew. But a Nigerian based film with all nigerian cast/crew would be ok, despite it being all 1 ethnicity. Or all Maori. Or all Persian. Or Indian. Or Mexican. Or Peruvian. Or lots and lot of other groups, so long as they aren't white. THAT is the problem, it isn't about diversity or representation, it's just about not white.

I still think this greek epic filled with modern new york city cast is going to have a twist and not really be a story that takes place during the time period its supposed to.....and theres a catch here. It all seems so....on the nose if its not

Chris Nolan rarely disappoints me, so I'm down for whatever he's doing. Hes earned that trust

And even if there were many women our there prettier than lupita, which i doubt, I also doubt they have her acting skills. But Chris Nolan isn't known for his female characters being very prominent anyways.

I see a lot of reddit "cinephiles" and such arguing about the armor but I can't bring myself to care about that sort of thing for a movie like this. The odyssey is a fantastical work and I feel like Nolan is using that as an excuse to basically make a modern epic with about as much concern for realism as the original epics had. Which isn't much.

Bit time will tell. Again, a lot of this is riding on his reputation as a filmmaker for me snd me trusting that he knows what he's doing and doing what he knows.

I dont think anyone in this movie is particularly ugly, but I dont go to movies for pretty faces. Thats very low on the scale of importance to me.

As for the odyssey, it's a fantasy of Greek origin. Bur Greek wasn't all white, it had a lot of immigrants and trade and such. Probably not to the level this movie will feature it, but again. This is a fantastical epic narrative, and thats all I want to be delivered. The rest is theatrical set dressing, and my viewing mind will take that into account

I find it extra hilarious due to Oppenheimer being an all white cast and now he's going with all diverse cast

Especially funny when Oppenheimer won Best Picture and multiple other awards at The Oscars 2024
I can't tell if you think I was joking or not. I'm also not sure what your point is about Oppenheimer. I mean clearly how good a movie is had nothing to do with the racial makeup of its cast. But anyway these are simply the rules …

Yeah there's 4 criteria (cast, crew, internships/apprenticeships/training, marketing side) and the movie has to meet at least 2 of them.

Helen of Troy was not described as "blonde and fair skinned" in original verse of the epic. Greeks were not Nords. The portrayal of the likes of Alexander the Great and others as blonde haired pale people is as much a fantasy as the portrayal of Greeks as subsaharan Africans.

No surprise though, this guy is the average ascendant Xitter user obsessed with trve Evropean aesthetics. 2 sides, one coin.

No, I wouldn't cast Nyong'o in this movie as anyone from the epic, but I also wouldn't cast Bawston Matt as fucking Odysseus or Tom Holland as his son.

travis scott is the person who ignored people getting stomped to death at his concert, he was informed what was happening, and he continued the concert

he is ugly inside and out, I can't believe that he is allowed in any production

I was referring to outward appearance, I dont think he's phsycislly ugly.

Morally you can definitely make a case for.

I'll play:

Ancient Greeks were all olive-skinned with dark brown or black hair, right? 😉

Of course, they were definitely not "Nordic" fair-skinned and blonde, and most were Mediterranean in appearance which makes sense, given the region but it also depended on region/geography:
Islanders were mostly olive-skinned with darker hair, while northern Greeks and Macedonians sometimes had lighter hair and fairer skin.
Alexander the Great did indeed have fairer hair and skin, as described by Plutarch (Πλούταρχος) and in sources connected to Aristotle (Αριστοτέλης).
Importantly, "fairer" or "lighter" doesn't mean blonde like Debbie Harry from Blondie, it just means his features were lighter compared to typical Greeks.
In modern Greece, "ξανθός" (xanthós) literally translates to "blonde", in Ancient Greece it just meant "fairer"/"lighter".

As a side note, since this is about a movie based on Homer's work, Achilles is also described as fair-haired - even though he's a fictional character, Homer's description reflects the types of features present in that era, not just something pulled out of thin air.

TLDNR : While Greeks were not "Nordic" fair haired and fair skinned, they also weren't all olive skinned with dark hair something which had to do with the regions they were from - you could say that there was...some pretty strong diversity even back then (pun intended).

There was such an obvious coordinated push to promote Lupita Oyongo as a beauty icon starting a little over a decade ago.

And I assumed it was a response to the African American beauty icons of the past - ie Halle Berry, Tyra Banks, etc appearing lighter skinned.

And so I googled it and google AI tells me - it was in fact an effort to "redefine the Euro centric beauty standard"

Also during my search - a lot of old reddit threads popped up where someone innocently asks "Is it me or is Lupita not beautiful at all?" and the responses as overly represented by professors/academic people acting like hostile gatekeepers, saying something along the lines of: "Of course she is, people who say she isn't sound ignorant" or "The fact that you are even asking this question reveals something about you"

What surprises me the most is that Google AI didn't even sugar coat or deny it. It flat out says it was a coordinated effort by Hollywood elites

That said, I am still surprised Nolan would do this. Casting Lupita as Helen of Troy feels so peak woke era. Even the Cleopatra documentary felt like it came out a few years late.

has it actually been confirmed yet? I'm surprised they were able to keep it under wraps for as long as they did if it is true.

Can't imagine Helen of Troy would have much screen time, just how packed is this film? But I'd be curious if they bring in her child by Menelaus, the girl Hermione, who IIRC does spend time with Odysseus' son. Even better if they have her have the second daughter that Agamemnon sacrifices before heading to Troy. Some dark shit in these Greek tragedies.

Don't show Helen. Would be far more effective that way. She's supposed to be so fucking hot that Prince Paris knew he was risking all out war if he took her away, and he didn't a give a fuck. Something like that is best left to people's imagination.

So I checked IMDB yesterday because of this thread, and the character under Lupita's listing was blank. As of today, though:

Agree. It's like showing the Christian God in a movie. The reality is supposed to be so overwhelming that it's incomprehensible; it'd be effective to leave it to imagination.

I was looking at the cast for Oppenheimer and there were a few non white actors, not a lot but I guess that's what got Oppenheimer qualified. I don't watch The Oscars but how long ago was that rule put in?

If you end up enjoying it more power to you but for me from what I seen from the trailers, it just been turning me off. Especially if Lupita being Helen is true

I hope so, since what I seen of the costumes didn't give me any hope

It's fine if you feel that way but lot of other people don't and the fact is that sex sells

He is adapting the book where the main cast is all greek. Helen was described as having blond hair and pale skin

I wouldn't exactly compare those to this

Helen (Ancient Greek: Ἑλένη, romanized: Helénē), also known as Helen of Troy, or Helen of Sparta, and in Latin as Helena, was a figure in Greek mythology said to have been the most beautiful woman in the world. She was believed to have been the daughter of Zeus by Leda or Nemesis, and the sister of Clytemnestra, Castor, Pollux, Philonoe, Phoebe and Timandra.

She was shown as recently as 2004 in the Troy movie

I have a feeling this movie will be the almagamation of all of Nolan's worst tendencies. I can just see it.

Unfitting color grading.

Too grounded and boring. Are we gonna get sea monsters? Doubt it. Probably just a big storm yayyy. Cyclops might be the only fantasy creature. On that point…

First time directing a fantasy and guess what. Nolan's gonna make it grounded into grey sludge.

His fight scene directing has always been atrocious. Can't fall back on guns in this one, maybe bow and arrow with save it.

Stunt casting. Lupita being Helen is a humiliation ritual where he's daring people to say she's ugly, or you're racist. Matt Damon while I love him as an actor sticks out like a sore thumb and his costume looks like cosplay for the wrong culture.

We all know the mixing will be bad so an overbearing zimmer score with bad over serious dialogue you can't hear.

He's on a 2 movie dud streak. Tenet was atrocious even if you understood it. Oppenheimer was half of a good movie and half pro commy propaganda. Not enough science engineering porn, treated you like an idiot. And the explosion for someone who prides himself on special effects basically shot a large propane tank. Pathetic for the core scene of the movie.

All red flags. Hope I'm wrong but I feel like I can see this movie in my head already, epic shots but no soul or fun.

It's pretty accurate to the time period and the people involved. A lot of scientists were aligned with or sympathetic to communism at the time (still are…), with the notable exception of von Neumann who urged that we preemptively nuke Moscow. Regardless, it's a film from Oppenheimer's perspective so his enemies are the film's villains.

We will never see casting any where near accurate again whilst the Oscars force movie's to have non white people.

I don't think this movie should have used a white woman but they should cast a woman that makes sense to the historical description.

I don't see how the Oscars requirements aren't classed as racism as forcing is the same as banning... In my uneducated opinion.

Accurate but also wrong on it's morality. No doubt you know this but it bears repeating every chance one gets, Communism is bad, there were spies in the US stealing our secrets and we needed to put people on trial. Oppenheimer is no exception. Mcarthy was right and is misalgned by every piece of hollywood media we see.
