‘Dark Tower’: Clashing Visions, Brutal Test Screenings Plagued Journey to Big Screen

Very nice GAF.

I'm enjoying the posts written by those boasting of how much they hated the books and when they jumped off, Great. You are all now a higher class of human like all full GAF members and only profess to appreciate universally acclaimed media.

I lurk a lot and don't post often due to how fucking negative this place is.

that was a pretty negative comment

I heard a story about one of the test screenings where the cards distributed to the audience included a note asking them not to suggest recasting one of the leads because it was too late for that action to be taken.

I've also heard this is going to be an amazing piece of shit.

Woooh

*holds on to his butt*

Sony Pictures is a dumpster fire

(it's been cut to play like The Dark Tower was a modern YA novel, from what I understand)

hahahaha

God damn. My dad who knows nothing about Stephen King, or any of this, saw the trailer and said right after that it looked like YA garbage. I was trying to explain to him that the movie should be more like a Western but turns out he was right all along.

It's okay, Stephen. Your check will still clear.

Usually when I've seen The Dark Tower mentioned around here, it's people recommending it because they love the series so much. Of course there are going to be books they like less than others, that's kinda how discussion goes with something that has multiple entries...

This is not Idris Elba's movie.

I haven't heard about this! Fill us in

They did one big test screening at one of the biggest theaters in LA. What they didn't expect was the overwhelmingly negative response to it, and as a result, they destroyed the test cards and tried to pretend that the screening never happened. A reporter caught wind of the test screening being a thing and managed to corroborate enough evidence that it did to get a story out on it, which angered Sony enough to pursue legal action on them. All the while, they did reshoots on the film as late as the week before the film was scheduled to release in order to salvage it from the test screening response.

The book Hit & Run goes into much more detail about this, but the moral of the story is that Peter Guber is one hell of a piece of work when it comes to movie executives. He makes Rothman look like Kevin Feige.

The first time I saw the trailer I figured this. Shifting the story to the kids perspective and condensing it all. Its gonna be a far worse Midworld Maze Runner.

Starts strong, falls off a cliff. It's interesting that a lot of it is intertwined throughout his other novels, sometimes more overtly, usually just in the background or briefly. I can say it's an ambitious idea that I don't know has really been done before in the way that he did it, over the period that he did it.

Still, people remember endings, and the general ending is a pretty big misfire in my opinion. The lead up to it wasn't so hot either, and it does sort of sour the entire legacy if you didn't like it.

The Stand and The Dark Tower series are impossible to be made into movies. TV series or mini-series is the best way to go.

King is a tough writer to adapt anyway. Very few writers are capable of doing a good adaption. Frank Darabont is one even though he is adapted some of the most narratively sound novella's and novels which helps. Mick Garris managed to do a great job with his mini series adaptations of The Stand and The Langoliers.

I know Warner has been tossing around the idea of adapting the Stand. I think it's possible with the right writer and if they are willing to pony up the budget for 4 140-150 movies filmed the way The Lord of the Rings was. You need a film for the Captain Trips segment, a film for all the survivors to start forming groups and heading to meet either Mother Abigail or Flagg. One film that covers Boulder and Vegas getting up and ready and Harold's betrayal and then one film to cover The Stand itself.

I came off a bit strong, sorry all. Not feeling well this day.

I have a special emotional connection with this work because a few years ago I suffered a bad concussion and was mostly bed bound for a week, with only books on tape to pass the time. (Couldn't stand light, read, any video or screen....) The dark tower series took me in again and it's been special to me since then.

It's got to be McConaughey.

Has anyone noticed how he's barely in the previews? Why hide him, unless...

I think so. I like him, but he needs good material to work for him, he's just one of those kind of actors. His dialogue reads are super cheese in the brief glimpses you do see him. Granted all of the dialogue sounds terrible, but at least Elba is one of those guys who can try to sell anything.

Well it sounds like the film adaptation is gonna take an oy sized dump right on your chest.

It's looked like trash from the very beginning. The Dark Tower is not unfilmable, but it's also not Summer Tentpole material.

A classic tale of good and evil, “The Dark Tower” stars Idris Elba as the last Gunslinger, who is locked in an eternal battle with a sorcerer known as the Man in Black, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey.

This bit from the article probably describes pretty well what they were going for, and it's also why the film doesn't really catch my interest

Good vs evil is certainly part of it, but the grey parts make it interesting. Roland is not really a good guy and the question of how far he would go to reach the Tower hangs over the whole series. It's as much a story about obsession as about the fight for the 'good side'

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
Having someone other than Roland be the main character was a smart idea in theory. Roland doesn't have a strong personality and doesn't talk much. Jake is a weird choice though because he doesn't have much of a presence until later on in the series

Idris Elba and McConaughey with both survive this, but it's a damn shame that they weren't given better material.

The stoic hero character is still viable. The first movie being a minimal post apocalyptic western could have been made on a shoe string budget too.

I feel Fucking sad about this.
The right actors, the blessings of King. Fuck.
It's like wanting a child and getting a child you grow to be disappointed in at the age of 18 because he's in to some anime shit.

I'm still not sure who this movie is targeted to.

It seems to happen when you have a property big enough that it has fan dedication but isn't main stream.

Having this be some kind of book 'sequel' isn't for book reader when it's a massively truncated and missing so much of a long journey.

People who haven't read the books aren't going to care about the weight of any of it and it looks like a high concept sci-fi action movie

It's like all those years they wanted to make a DeadPool movie but didn't want the character to be anything like Deadpool from the comics.

I just don't get who this movie is for.

This movie gonna bomb and they'll get it right with an epic TV series later. Elba, as much as I love him, is miscast. Roland was always supposed to be a cranky older white dude.

Yep.

Also no Susannah.

I actually might reverse casting here. McConaughey channeling Russ from True Detective for Roland and Idris doing some creepy laughter with his full on British accent for the Man in Black.

Should have been a three season Netflix series with most of the last three books cut out and maybe a new ending.

It's for the same people studios always say it's for when something flops

"it's for the fans"

Even though that's basically never true because they're the ones that would be most critical of it. I get what you're saying though, I've wondered that as well. The whole thing is just sort of an odd decision on every level.

There are very few things that will get me heated on a ranting triad like The Dark Tower books but I was actually looking forward to the movie to see if they'd eventually fix the fuck ups that are the last 3 books in the series. The idea that they'd do a loose retelling of the first book to anchor it to the actual continuity/story, and then go off on their own adventures being able to pick and choose what they keep from the books and what they invented, was really kind of exciting to me.

Very nice GAF.
