‘Dark Tower’: Clashing Visions, Brutal Test Screenings Plagued Journey to Big Screen

Dead

well not really...yet
As someone who's never read the books, all I can say is that I was really disappointed in the visual style of the movie because I've associated it with the Marvel version of the comic for years:

You'd probably need Tarsem and a bigger budget to hit those kind of visuals, but what they have now is so grey and dreary and generic looking. Again, haven't read the books so maybe that's closer to the source material.
Oh man yeah. Jae Lee's art and Richard Isanoves colors really instantly come to my mind when I think of DT now.

I kinda gave up with the comics once Lee left tbh though.

Still not sure what the hell they were thinking with this. Especially making it a 90 minute sequel to a book series a large part of the audience probably isn't going to be all that familiar with.

Should have just started from the beginning and made it an HBO or Netflix series.

Rothman strikes again.

Can't believe I got excited for this movie. My yearly budget for crappy movies is running out fast between this and Valerian.

Someone mentioned Wednesday screenings, though that might've just been #FakeNews

Nah, there's probably some cities that are getting 7pm wednesday screenings for radio station promotion/press.

But basically - I don't think there's much of an "embargo" because in most instances, by the time a critic has the review ready to go - the movie will already be in theaters.

(although I wouldn't be surprised if there still was an embargo that basically said "you can't post this shit until 9am Friday morning" or something)

Well, I'm seeing this tomorrow night. I really want this to be good but that doesn't seem likely. Read the books last year and loved them. This makes me sad.

A film they pretty much have the entire set of books to derive material from, encompassing and connecting all of Stephen King's creative life works in one way or another, and they only managed a 90 minute run time and Rothman was also hacking away at it.

Jeesuz Sony. Just WTF?!

It's a goddamn shame that an adaptation of The Dark Tower saga was handled to Sony Pictures to devour and this is the loaf they pinched out.

I can't believe they didn't make a Gunslinger movie.

The Gunslinger taking up the first 3/4ths of a movie, ending with
Roland staring at/into Eddie's door
would have been a better movie I bet :\ And it would have allowed for more movies to follow if it did well.

Only real downside with that film is that
The MiB wouldn't get a ton of screen time
.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
We should hear something shortly. Especially with that 90 min runtime. 😂

I've been refreshing twitter nonstop to see if any early impressions are out yet. Sad because I'm almost done the series and LOVE it...but things seem so bleak. At this point I have a feeling that at best, this is gonna be like the Ender's Game movie of a few years ago - a mild blip that everyone forgets about a few years later, with the remainder of the source material unadapted. Hope I'm wrong.

Anyone else trying to ignore the negativity and still hope the movie is decent? I never read the books so I guess I'm less invested.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!

Jae Lee's a good artist, but I don't think his stuff works that well for comics. The guy doesn't even draw backgrounds or settings.

Random Human

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
I need some hot takes, hit me with the fresh hot takes. Where these reviews at?

I just got tweeted that it's the worst adaptation since Battlefield Earth.

I mean, it's just one tweet, so like - it maybe isn't really that bad.

But it's probably real shitty.

You want to do a impressions/reviews thread later? I'm going to bed so I can't unless they all wait 8 hours.

Nah, I'm sure if it's that bad we're gonna smell it whether there's a thread or not.
