‘Dark Tower’: Clashing Visions, Brutal Test Screenings Plagued Journey to Big Screen

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
According to a letterbox review I read, McConaughey's performance may be razzie-worthy. Gotta admit, I'm actually interested.

The clip they provided for his Colbert interview was really bad.

How any studio can think they can do justice to the books with a 90-minute runtime is beyond me. Shit is going to be hot trash.

It doesn't seem like the original intention was a 90 minute movie. It's just that the whole thing ended up so terrible that there's only 80-85 minutes of footage that's worth showing anyone.

"We have this story that's a slow, very deliberately paced quasi-western with some magical elements too it about a half cowboy half bounty hunter who's hunting an ancient foe with seemingly mystical powers through a dark, barren land to a place neither fully understands, how do we sell it?"

"Change literally everything about what you just said into a shitty YA movie with a 13 year old lead character and a coked out Matt McC."

"I do not bomba with my gun; he who bombas with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.

I bomba with my heart.”

Just read that chapter on Last Action Hero from Hit and Run that was mentioned in this thread, really interesting peek behind the curtains of such a bloated, disastrous production.

I can't believe that Stephen King waited like 30 years to adapt this and THIS is the way they ended up doing it. I mean, I know it's not all his fault but dude has dealt with Hollywood enough to know better.

Stephen King has no say over the actual production. Unless he agrees to be a producer / oversee the production, he sold the rights and the studio works on the film, that's how it works.

Nah, has WAAAAAAAAAAAY more clout now than he did a decade ago.

The man won an Oscar.

Yeah, I guess, but him being involved already isn't selling me anymore. His last 3 films got little to no love (with Sea of Trees being complete ass), and this shit right here isn't sounding much different.

I'm just saying he needs be careful in not becoming a parody of himself and/or of people simply checking out.

I don't know how he can become a parody of himself now when he's clearly taking more diverse roles than the surfer dude rom com lead he was in the early '00s.

The roles may be "diverse" but McConaughey hasn't done shit with them these past 4-5 films. You see some nonsense like Sea of Trees and it's on the level of his car commercials...

Fuckeeeers. The Gunslinger basically reads like a 2 hour treatment. Just shoot the damn thing as it's written and it would be amazing.

Afterwards yeah you could probably make some changes.

I just got tweeted that it's the worst adaptation since Battlefield Earth.

I'm not defending Sea of Trees (haven't even seen it), but it was directed by Gus Van Sant, so I kind of understand why he picked it. And it also didn't get a nationwide release.

He really hasn't had that many big misfires, but they are starting to add up...Free State of Jones, Gold, and now probably The Dark Tower.

Damn, I am still planning to see it tomorrow night but I am not amped up. Frankly the trailer looks like that RIPD movie.

I love it when we get "what went wrong" or "Ain't my fault" articles before the movie even drops

We got a ton of these for Wonder Woman though and that turned out great.

Thing is, almost every single movie is a disaster before editing and its that process that either turns lemons into lemonade or into...well, really shitty lemonade.

There were rumours of WW being troubled, but I don't think we had an actual "This movie is bad and here's who to blame" article before its release, did we?

Much like the similar one about The Mummy, this feels like preemptive damage control.

He's just boring as shit to me at the moment, which might be because of the quality of the films themselves, or maybe I'm just getting sick of the dude. We'll see.

I have no doubt that this movie will be bad but that article that came out yesterday about the production of the movie didn't actually make it seem like it was that tumultuous behind the scenes. The article was just kind of exaggerating stuff that's pretty standard for big movies these days.

But this still has all the signs of being a total turd. Expecting less than 20% on RT.

I said this before, the but the Wonder Woman stories were a.) much further away from release, to the point where the movie hadn't actually been finished yet, and b.) sourced from either podcasts or panel discussions talking about "my sources have said" or sites that aren't very reputable. Variety, on the other hand, is for lack of a better term like the Wall Street Journal of Hollywood. If they're printing it, it's because it's being fed to them by people inside the studio.

Since reviews are being published, I'll share some thoughts:

-Roland in NYC for the first time was a quick bit of fun. Really enjoyed that.
-I liked the design of the
Taheen and the lines showing in their skin when they had a mask on.
-The hints about
billy-bumblers/Oy
are fun.
-They go through a lot of book material, especially from later books. No clue why that was needed. I did know this going in, though.
-Relating to Dutch Hill,
the monster portion is lame.
-I'm a huge fan of the Man in Black and MM didn't do him justice. It could have been problems with the script, but there wasn't even one maniacal smile from him.
-Idris was easily the best part of the movie, and was a pretty good Roland. The kid wasn't terrible.

I was very optimistic about the movie despite all the signs it wouldn't turn out so hot. I still think the movie was average and not awful, and I'm really hoping they can make some money back in the hope that things are corrected and the TV show is produced. But I will say this could have been a ton better, especially given the source material.
